@richards5855 The author definitely puts a lot of thought into it, and everything else, to a very detailed degree. As these are uneducated orphans living in a post-apocalyptic society, they don't have the linguistic tools to express what they're feeling properly, much like the kids inside the school who aren't being given any sex-ed. They do insist a few times they're a guy, there's usually some ulterior reasoning, and this is only the beginning of the story. They do say "Sis is fine" and don't mind being called such, so even if they have a male identity they seem to be fine with any pronouns, to put it in modern terms.

She was mentally fcked up, she was in a state of despair seen when she was calling out to Maru on the bed to save her, which when Maru did come, she untied herself cuz she knew Maru was there. plus even if she did untie herself earlier she would’ve mostly likely been caught by robin and his goons cuz she didn’t have anything to defend herself with. Robin got his days counted.

gotta say, Haruki really got the absolute worst fate there. Like, you get caught by some terrifying monster because you decided to fuck about and find out, and you're almost eaten only for your sister to save you. And she's so desperate to make you survive that she basically kills herself just so you can live on in her body. So now you, previously cis male kid who was very comfortable with being a guy, not only has to deal with survivor's guilt and impostor syndrome, but a fuck ton of probably permanent gender dysphoria as well. God that's gotta suck.

On the Dr Usami / Shiro connection, they don't just look alike, he didn't just have that button - Shiro said "I'd tear myself apart for you, if you wanted. If you'd let me." And _dude gave her his FRICKIN' EYE._ He did it! He tore himself apart for her! Kid didn't know how to be intimate cause every kid there was sheltered from ever seeing any example or being taught about it, but he knew what he was saying and he frickin' meant it.

Also, at the end episode 8 we see a little portion where Mimihime is in a dark tunnel, scared and uncertain, than we see someone else approach her reaching out their hand and as she takes it she says "you came!" with a happy smile as light pours in from the side of the other character. We were literally shown them passing on and we still got blindsided at the end.

There's so many things to unravel in this anime, wish i could name them all but once you read (or see videos) the manga, it is actually awesome how all the pieces falls into place, it's just sooo good. Can't wait for season 2. Here's one, still crying about mimihime's death, casue... the little sharingan girl wanted to protect her and the illusions she gave her on the facility were actually showing us how she was gonna die and since she was the only one who could befriend her with her powers she stayed near her to ensure nothing happened to her. They deserved better

The half of the story that occurs in "heaven" happens a bit before the great disaster, 15 years prior to the other half following Maru and Kiruko. This can be difficult to notice on the first watch because the anime uses some vague terms and trickery here and there to keep viewers out of the loop. Once this is understood, however, it becomes clear that Dr. Usami is Shiro, the woman he is keeping alive is Mimihime, and the hiruko in the basement is Ohma (sharingan girl). There is more than enough evidence in the anime alone to come to this conclusion. Some of the foreshadowing of this includes the button that Mimihime gave to Shiro being the same one Dr. Usami has, Mimihime being entranced by the open sky, Mimihime's vision that two people (Maru who looks like Tokio and Kiruko) would save her, Ohma's abilities being identical to the basement hiruko, the nightmare visions that Mimihime had from Ohmas ability including needles and machinery, etc. This video breaks it down well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIfRq3WgrLdppbs though it's kind of fun to make the connections yourself after finding out about the past/present split.

The relationship between the ice children and the ice monster is that the ice monster was his mother before to die. The two woman hanged were at 99% the two student girls who kiss each other. One of them was probably affected by the disease, so when she died by hanging she become the monster. The monsters maintain the superpower of the original people, so that is it.

17:07 yeah, he is. - the spider and the dad both have the same little red action figure charm. - children inherit some variation of their parents abilities (can confirm from maru, his kill technique is a variation of his dads ability). - black spots are a sign that a monster will spawn from the hosts body after they die. - a monster broke in around a month after the dad escaped. piecing it all together, its more or less confirmed that the moms were facility kids (specifically the two girls shown kissing several times in earlier episodes). the rest is all kinda spelled out: they left the facility, moved into the walled town, used juichi as a sperm donor to have a child together. after the child was born they wanted to leave, likely to seek treatment for the black spots that developed on one (or both) of the moms. but they were caught, executed, and strung up outside the walls. the spider monster spawned from one of them and broke through the walls, the men escaped as they were awake tending to the baby, while the women were all frozen in their sleep.

Remember Robin's expression when Kiruko came there to meet with him? It wasn't a good shock, it was a bad shock - a "oh, I'm done" shock. I was immediately like "I'm not sure what of, but this dude's GUILTY, RUUUUUN". Now he really seems like a total piece of shit - like he was already concensually or (i'm afraid) non-consensually sleeping with Haruki's sister, and lil bro was just too naive and too attached to Robin to even notice that. And those anti-tech-advancement ppl? They said Usami did bad things to them, we saw he didn't, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they misunderstood. I mean, Robin was with them for some time too and seeing that captured Maneater makes me think HE WAS making some sick experiments which Usami didn't know of. Also damn - I always thought it was the Doctor or Doctor's orders to shot Haruki's sister in the head in that alley... but now it seems like it was Robin who did that. This man single-handedly destroyed so many lives, it's insane. I semi-respect his skills to pull it all off. I mean, he makes ppl like him, respect him, becomes a leader of a society, became a local hero of another society 5 years ago, learns how to be a "doctor". I'm kinda glad he's alive although he's a monster, because making him r*pe Kiruko just to get killed off instantly is a cheap trick and bad writing. And seeing Maru bullying Robin in that corner for whole 2 minutes was great. Just standing there, menacingly and being like "oh nah, you're staying here, buddy". I hope nothing like this happens again, but I kinda want to see THIS Maru again at some point.

In the manga at the beginning Maru said that Kiruko has another scar on her head, aside the one of the transplant but she/he doesn't remember anything about it. The Doctor that did the trasplant probably did it because the sister had some huge brain damage, like a gunshot in head, so he tried to save the mind of the brother putting his brain of her sister body. Because Robin when saw Kiruko was scared, he knew that the sister should supposed be dead ... and so probably this monster is the one who shoot her, or is involved. Moreover, brain transplant is so sci-fi advanced, that the Doctor probably worked in the school/heaven, where was a known procedure.

Finally some recognition for this show. It's such a masterpiece, to the point where i would put on my top 10 of all time. I highly recommend that you read the manga. It's not finished yet but it's worth it. It's not wordy like HxH, but ot conveys a lot of information and it makes the reader think a lot, but putting the pieces together is super satisfying. 10/10

BTW If you look at the leg of the spider as it's running you will see the same charm that the guy had shared with the mother of his son. So the mother was likely one of the children that escaped and when she was killed she became the spider. It also explains why the kid has the ice ability.
