Very interesting Timo. I am trying to get my head around your comment about hitting the ball at a low point , e.g. table height or even lower. I have always been taught to try to hit near the top of the curve to get a maximum margin to produce a curve that will land on (the opposite end of) the table. But I guess the trade off is different when trying to produce a slow spinny topspin? Can you elaborate about the why? Is it about the possibility to get a more gentle brush on the ball?
@pnachtwey3 жыл бұрын
This makes sense. If you hit the ball at its highest point the ball will bounce up about 80% of the height from which you hit it unless you hit it down into the table. In this case it will bounce up even higher. The ball should be at its highest when it crosses the net. To do this you must loop the ball from below net height so it just goes over the net. Then it won't bounce up over net height. In fact the ball should bounce out low due to the Magnus effect and fast from the spin pushing off the table.

Thanks for putting the effort in to teach us this. When being the student it's hard to separate the fale from the real teachers but we all know your words carry real weight! (Also glad it's in English, it is one think to have a conversation in German but technical stuff is already hard to follow in English) Btw. Since this stroke is so physically demanding, could you give us some pointers on how to train the body for this off-table aswell? I personally run out of strenght after trying about a dozen reps of these when going really deep.

I used to go for this heavy spin, it's a lot of fun and like you said in the video, the aim was not to hit it very fast, that way the opponent would have to block in the falling phase and the ball would 'pop up' when they did that . But this also puts more stress on the elbow and knees than a conventional topspin so I've stopped relying on it as much :/
