Heaviest Train Ever Hits The Grade In Lakeland Florida & New Amtrak Locomotives, Quad Gate RR Xings!

CSX Locomotives Roaring Loudly With Over Loaded Rock & Scrap Metal Cars! Brand New Amtrak Charger Locomotives Double Head Passenger Train On One Of Their First Runs, Locomotive Power Move Seen From My Motel Window & Fast Intermodal Train. These trains are in Lakeland, Florida and Mulberry, Florida on CSX Tampa, Florida area routes.
The first train is the best train that I have seen in Lakeland, Florida. This is train M452 and it had a mid train DPU locomotive working hard and I got it going up the long grade in Lakeland. It is a daily freight train that runs from Miami to Waycross, Georgia. It had loaded rock cars up front and a lot of over loaded scrap metal cars in the middle. It had just passed the Amtrak station when I filmed it crossing Kentucky Ave. I wish the camera could show what it's like standing next to a huge train like this. You really feel the power and the size when you are standing next to it.
Next we see both sides of an Amtrak train in Lakeland on its way to Tampa. Amtrak uses this route to run between New York and Miami. This train has 2 of the 75 new ALC-42 locomotives that are being delivered to Amtrak throughout 2024. They are primarily replacing the P40 and P42 locomotives. They will reach 125mph, they use less fuel and are more environmentally friendly. About 850 million dollars was set aside in 2019 to purchase the new locomotives and pay for their maintenance contracts. I will also be posting a video of 3 of them on a passenger train in Florida. They are being built by Siemens in Sacramento, California.
This video shows the Tropicana/intermodal train passing through Lakeland at another quad gate railroad crossing with Amtrak following them on their return from Tampa. We also see a locomotive power move from my window at the motel in Mulberry, Florida. I had a great view of the railroad. I watched phosphate trains pass by and I saw trains with tank cars pass by. The outro shows part of a train at a railroad diamond in the middle of a 4 lane highway in Mulberry. I will put that full video together soon. That was at the Circle B Bar Reserve ranch in central Florida. That place is really awesome. It is a huge park with all kinds of wildlife. The gigantic lake there never has a boat on it and alligators are everywhere. Last year Jackie counted 21 of them floating around while we were on a long wooden platform that goes out into the lake.

Another awesome video JT and we also have one of those new Amtrak engines on the crescent that runs from New Orleans Louisiana to New York City New York and they run it to Atlanta Georgia every day and turn it around on a Y and head back to New Orleans that evening I know two of the engineers that run it and they said it will do every bit of 125 miles an hour and I ask one of them has he had it up to 125 and he said oh yeah especially when they’re making up time. Lol

Very cool. You see a lot of the Siemens Charger locomotives in Chicago, where they power the trains going up the Amtrak Michigan Line at Porter, Indiana, which is their high-speed line. I've never run, or been in one, but I saw them all of the time during my railroad career. Pretty neat and always lit-up very brightly. Lots of teething problems, which hurt their reliability, but they have mostly ironed them out. Excellent video.

That CSX train had that DPU howling along the tracks - a very nice sound of power! Amtrak gets some cool technology. I saw a pair of these that were configured for overhead power the other day. Probably expensive, but darn good looking :) And - that quad gate looks intimidating - LOL! I would be worried whether I was in the right place :)

Without really knowing whether or not the boxcars and the tanker cars on that first train were loaded or not, just seeing how many cars were full of rock and scrap metal made me appreciate how much POWER those locomotive engines have !! Wow!

It's possible to tell by looking at the truck springs. A loaded car will have them squashed to the point that there's almost no space between the individual coils. JT sometimes points this out. A fully loaded car can be between 263,000 and 286,000 pounds. If you add up the figures on the "LT WT" and "LD LMT" markings on the car, you'll come up with one of the two weights listed above.

Wow! That was an excellent NS mixed freight JT! It had lots of stone and lots of scrap metal that could have come from a machining operation. Or it could possibly have been imported for steel making. For all we know, all those metal shavings might have been a locomotive at one time. On their way to a store near you as brand new Gillette razors! Thank you for this first railfanning video from your recent vacation to Florida, Jaw Tooth! The CSX train at the beginning of this video was a long and heavy train. Welcome to Florida, JT!!! Your Kentucky Ave Xing (video) location (MP850) is a short distance from where I am at MP825 (Davenport)...both mileposts along CSX's "A" Line (ex-ACL). Cool manifest train in the opener...check out the ex-GT boxcar @4:07 and the ex-CN boxcar @4:12. Those scrap-metal gondolas belong to "big-time" scrap dealer D.J. Joseph (reporting marks "DJJX" etc.). D.J. Joseph operates a huge scarp yard in Orlando..."DJJ" scrapped many-an-Amtrak car (and other passenger cars) "back-in-the-day". The rock / aggregate hoppers are likely going to Conrad Yelvington in Tampa. Conrad also has a large setup in Orlando...I see their cars on northbound CSX manifest M457 all the time. That Amtrak train you shot was Number 92 "Silver Star" bound for New York. Earlier on that day (Feb 9), I caught the southbound "Star" (91) going thru Davenport with a rare "visitor" on the headend, DOT telemetry car DOTX221, in Tuscan Red!! Great video... 👍👍

Just like some of the mega trains up in Kentucky or coming into Cincinnati. Since we can't ship anything to Cuba all of the broken awnings golf carts corroded sprinkler systems plus autos and appliances have to leave Florida Northbound and it's headed for electric Arc furnaces in Alabama and South Carolina. Sad to say with all the Hurricanes that in itself generates a lot of scrap every time. Just like Florida the average age of the passenger cars and Freight cars was up there. Also aggregate is also one of the biggest tonnages shipped in the state and some of those cars were filled to the brim and then some. Time to enjoy a little warmth and a change of scenery.
