The sad part is... so many people are going to miss the point of this video, Troy... and those are the people with the "valid comments" and will ridicule you over your form. For the record, this video is pure archery gold. This channel has it all. Valid content. Valuable information. Thought provoking material. And now a heavy dose of satire. Thank you for the video, Troy. Keep up the great work. This video needs to go viral.

It’s funny to see all the little clips about “oh you don’t need a heavy arrow, this mega meat went thru this 250lb deer and stuck in the dirt.” (As the broadhead is laying there mangled.) I’m 5 for 5 on heavy arrows and single bevel broadheads. The deer’s reaction to getting shot with a super sharp head and heavy arrows are totally different than with a light arrow and an expandable head. The 5 said deer only made it 30 to 40 yards, stood there looking around trying to figure out what happened until they fell over. Companies and their PAID affiliates are literally scrambling to make you look like a quack so people won’t stop buying their rattle traps.

The test defining the results is why I like Paul Harrell for ammo tests. He uses a meat target including bone, skin, lung tissue simulation that shows what happens when bullets hit bone vs soft tissue. It's no different with arrows, living things aren't consistent and those differences must be accounted for and that means weight should be high and broad head design must be sharp and strong.

I have a stack of three square foam Morrell Yellow Jack targets ratchet strapped together. I shoot 517, 620 and 710 grain arrows. What I see is all three arrow weights penetrate roughly the same at the yardages I shoot. What I also see is if I shoot the 620 and 710 grain arrows at the top target from 40 yards and in the target tips over backwards. The 517 gets it to teeter a bit. Anecdotally the mass is delivering more energy at impact right? Enough to push the target over. This tells me the foam is really good at catching arrows regardless of speed and mass.

Baseball mit is a great analology here. The ball's mass is roughly equivalant, the imparted energy from a pitch and the direction of change is variable and YET for some reason you can still catch a baseball SAFELY moving at varied speeds without having tho change out to different "specialized" mits. The difference here is we change the variable from the imparting platform to the projectile mass and SUPRISE the resaults are the same. IT's as if Physics is math and not MAGIC.

He swaps to a 615gr 24% foc 5mm 30” long and guess what…. Same results within 1” or so. Difference is the doe shot with the 430gr arrow ran off with it and had trash penetration only hitting ribs, big boy arrow (same broadhead) on big buck was a pass thru even hitting leg bone on exit. Water jugs look like the best arrow penetration test media that is cheap and widely available. The heavier arrows penetrated further than the lighter arrows.

I like your philosophy Troy. What I don't get is that so many of us bought into the speed is king concept without considering the basics of where archery came from. Especially recently. And we argue it without thinking it through. For example, during the 1950's and 60's all anyone had to shoot were stick bows or recurves. By today's standards, those old wood or aluminum arrows fired from those old, ancient bows were heavy and slow. Many hunters got complete pass throughs on deer and sometimes even on moose. Most were using three or four blade broad heads instead of two blade, single bevel ones. Where did the penetration come from if it wasn't from mass? I've seen videos of light, fast arrows actually bouncing off deer or penetrating two or three inches. WTF??? Do you want to kill an animal, wound it or scare the hell out of it? I believe the lighter is better concept came from the pros who were shooting paper during competition and needed the flattest trajectory possible in order to minimize arrow deviations on their target grouping. Somehow their success on paper translated to success while hunting? It should never have been as hunting is vastly different from target shooting.

Funny story. I’m a noob at all of this. I’m 54 and hunted all my life, 90% of that hunting with a firearm. About 12 years ago, I dusted off my oldest son’s compound now and decided I was going to be a bow hunter. That didn’t exactly work out due to the severe keratuconis in my right eye. Literally couldn’t see the target because my sight pin “starbursts” to the point I couldn’t acquire the target. So much for that idea. 6 years ago, my dad gave me his crossbow, Excalibur Axiom…..he bought that thing new in 2010 and shot it twice, nearly taking off one of his thumbs. I hunted with that for the past few years, and was accidentally shooting a higher FOC bolt/broadhead combo. I’ll have to check the weights, can’t remember off the top of my head. This past spring, my doctor gave me a choice, either a cornea transplant, or a scleral lens for my worsening eye. Despite never having good results with contacts, I gave it a shot, and holy hell, I can see. Not 20/20……but definitely good enough to try that new fangled vertical bow. Now, I’m still experimenting……I bought a budget compound. And was really lost when it came to arrow set up. A lot of searching on KZbin led me to T-bone, and Troy’s channels. This got me pointed in the right direction…….I decided to start “small”……. I’m shooting a 28”, 300 spine arrow, with a hundred grain insert, and 150 grain field point. My draw weight at 29” is right at 65 pounds. I struggled for awhile with arrow flight…….Troy’s bare shaft and nock tuning got me flying straight. And my accuracy just from that alone really improved. I was outside on thanksgiving day shooting, and my son in law came up and was watching……he’s a flapper speed freak, was not exactly on board with my set up……until I got a little too cocky and tried to show off at 40 yards. First couple shots smacked the bag target right where I was aiming. But, the final shot I took…….lets just say I sailed that one. Unfortunately, my backstop was a real nice heavy duty garage door. I buried that arrow to the fletching in that door. The inset and tip did not stop for another 50 or 60 feet inside the garage. My son in laws new arrows, inserts, and field points delivered yesterday. By the way, other than destroyed fletching, the arrow was not even cracked.

Id like to see a video of heavy arrow weight forward adult arrows like say 600-700 and 18-20% weight forward vs a few of those arrows you just used maybe and a few 450 475 gr twizzlers on that foam and diff objects like this n see which does better. I bet u set up a 700gr adult arrows 22% forward n you might punch into that dumpster. Maybe not but I did get better penetration than both my buddies on a McKenzie foam deer target when I went to the heavy setup vs their 475 gr normal setups like 4 yrs ago. I was getting 4-6 inches average more penetration than they were to the point I had to shoot a new spot on target cause the middle spot was no longer stopping my arrows but was theirs so I had my own spot to shoot on target. Just an idea to help sink your proof home for the thick skulled people out there. After seeing results first hand on the diff in not even arrow flight but how they hit the deer and how the deer reacts when u have an adult arrow setup I'll never stop pushing people to go heavy and cut on contact. Once you know somebody who says they watched the buck run off with the arrow sticking in his shoulder cause it didn't penetrate enough you'll understand why troy is 100% right n isn't saying this shit just because. It's cause he's ethical and cares about quick clean kills even in the face of adversity.

My son, who is 12 now and I have shot hundreds of shots side by side into the foam targets over the past couple year. I always get more penetration than he does. But if he shoots one of my arrows, he gets the same penetration as he does with his own arrow that is 100 grains lighter. So if foam can't measure penetration and penetration is a factor of weight, then how can this be?

I have been following the "debates"/attacks on youtube. It is pointless debating with fools. The down range KE and momentum are FACTS - not opinions. I don't care how good you can shoot or how many animals anyone has shot - FACTS are facts - the rest are merely opinions. Personally I maybe have shot less animals than the "gurus" - but over 25 years of commercial hunting on the game farm - more animals have been shot than any one guru has probably shot - and there is a reason we cringe when a mechanicals comes out. Accuracy without penetration is as useless as penetration without accuracy! Troy has scientifically proved what we see in the field.

So is there a way to compare the penetrating power of different arrow set ups? There may not be a material that is an sufficient substitute for an animal, but surely there is a material that could act as a medium to compare arrow vs arrow penetration. It may not answer the question "will this arrow pass through a deer", but it would show if arrow A penetrates further than arrow B. Given the arrow flight data you have presented (ie heavy arrows have a higher momentum; heavy arrows lose less velocity; heavy arrows carry KE further down range; etc.) then I would expect we could observe this through some type of experiment. I am convinced that "adult arrows" are the way to go, and that is what I shoot now. I just do not understand why there is no experiment to correctly demonstrate the differences in the numbers. Maybe shooting into water with a camera under the water to see how far the arrow travels. Or maybe some type of scale that would measure the force delivered at impact.

Agree, but think it goes both ways. Just saw a comment on here referencing a 475gr arrow, and called it a twizzler. 50 more grains and all of a sudden it's an 'adult arrow'. So many people want to jump in these 'camps' before realizing we're kinda splitting hairs and it should be coming down to preference and hunting style. Dudley and most KZbinrs agree that 425-500 grains is suitable for most people out to 40yds and Troy has also signed off on 500gr as long as it's high foc and coc broadhead.

See that’s where you closed mind guys get it wrong. Dudley has never not one time said anything about the weight of arrow being the issue. The problem Dudley is referring to is guys listening to this clown and getting a test kit and throwing 200 and 300 grains on the front of an arrow and then having to run crazy stiff spines arrows “because “ if the heavy front weight. When all they need to do is go by the charts and start with a 120-150 total grains in the front. Dudley has always ran 500+ grain arrows. When you have the draw length he has and run full length arrows, you will run around the 500 grain mark. But then these fairy sniffers take their setups to TAC events and can’t hit a target at 70-80 yards. Why? Because the arrow build is completely wrong. If you guys are going to try and put this fairy above Dudley, you got to at least reach higher than that. But remember this. No matter how high you reach, Troy will always still be way beneath the likes of Dudley and Joel and such hunters as those. That’s the plain truth. There’s nothing Troy does is on Dudley’s level. Watch the podcast at how lost he was and the questions he was asking. Dudley wasn’t picking on Troy, he couldn’t help but laugh at some of the elementary questions Troy was asking, yet out here trying to teach people how to build arrows and hunt animals he has not even hunted himself. I literally just watched a video that said all arrows penetrate the same. They were using water jugs as the test medium. Using 400, 600, 800 grain arrows the penetration on all 3 arrows was exactly the same. If you were to shoot all 3 arrows at a tree you would get the same results as well lol. How can they say they all penetrate the same in all mediums of testing. Their test simply proves that they all can go through water jugs the same. But why is it that a 400 grain arrow that can go through 8 or 9 water jugs, cant get a full pass through on a deer consistently which is only 14-20" max, but a 650-800 grain arrow will go through nearly 100% of the time even when encountering bone. If they want to use thier test to kill water jugs, yes all arrows behave the same, but if you talk to anyone hunting big game consistently (Like Dr. Ashby) heavier arrows win the penetration game, no comparison. Plastic and ballistic gel is not even close to what skin, fat, flesh and bone can do to arrows. I dont understand how people dont see what "good" arrow penetration is. The real thing is out in the real world. Thank you Ranch Fairy! Love your videos! I started watching within the last 3 months, I have already changed my setup for this year lol! Seeing is believing!

Blah, Blah, Blah. I appreciate all these hangers on doing testing to mimic my actual testing (necropsies, etc) on pigs. But they are missing one thing. Critters to test on. There is no equivalent target to the actual target. 99% of these mimic videos are also with field points. Now, interestingly, water is kind of close the density of some pieces of a critter.....but those pieces aren't bone and bone stops arrows.

@@RanchFairyI think you missed the point of this viewers comment. Dan with elkshape heavily and ignorantly criticized Levi Morgan’s video. Then retracted his comments once he realized he judged rashly. Then worked together to work it out. Now you can only go so far on the spectrum (light or heavy) until your arrow performance starts to diminish. All This viewer is saying is that a well balanced arrow is required for a person. P.S. people can also only go so far on the spectrum before they start to diminish as well.

Pass through is the goal 100% of the time. 6. Adult broadhead with maximum structural integrity - including edge sharpness retention. On meat, arrow performance by the definition above, does NOT reduce as mass increases. It does decrease as arrow mass lowers. Ashby reports.

Sad, because then you burden Ed to explain three decades of work. Anyway, we'll just go round and round and round and round and round. You never stay on topic no matter how far you go in the hole and you always have another "tidbit". So you change the subject and appear to be the smartest guy in the room.
