Calima is a special atmospheric condition at the Canary Islands. Dust from the Sahara Desert is blown with a hot and dray wind to the islands. But not only dust is coming, sometime even grasshoppers! Some airports had to be closed because of the extremly limited range of vision. AEMET measured a PM10 concentration of 3000 µg/m³ today - the maximum permissible value in the EU is 50 si you can imagine whats going on here. The sand is everywhere, you can smell and taste it in the air. Additionally we had a heavy storm with wind guests above 160 km/h at Izaña and also heavy winds at the coast. The carnival had to be cancelled at the weekend and I know of a fire at Gran Canaria and a there was a "smaller" one 400m from my room - a really dangerous situation with the heavy wind. Just search for Calime in the News and you'll find a lot of material.
Anyway - I'm here to get some nice timelapses and so - here's a short one about the Calima. I hope all are doing well, the storm seems to be at his end but the heavy dust load is still here.
