Echium wildpretii - the official name - is an endemic plant at the Canary Islands. The specific epithet "wildpretii" honours the Swiss gardener and botanist Hermann Josef Wildpret. In 1860 he get responsible for the famous "Jardín de aclimatación de La Orotava" which grows from 220 species to 2486 in 1879 when he retired.
The subspecies wildpretii, with the local name Tajinaste Rojo grows only in the subalpine zone of the ravines of the vulcanic Mt. Teide - Spains highest mountain (3715 m). Measured from the ocean floor it's the third-tallest volcanic structure worldwide. The Teide National Park is Europes most visited national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. NASA tested the Mars rover Perseverance there - so you can imagine there aren't very friendly conditions with a lot of vulcanic rocks, intense radiation at day, cold nights, a lot of wind and little rain. You don't expect a plant waiting two years and than growing with it's flower up to 3 m in a few weeks. Perhaps it's the first time this growing in nature is shown in a timelapese.
Another subspecies trichosiphon - in spanish Tajinaste Rosado because of it's pink color - is endemic to a small area at La Palma around it's summit, Roque de los Muchachos. In the region above the clouds there's also the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos with it's famous GTC, the worlds largest optical and infrared telescope.
All shots except one were taken in 2022. I had the opportunity to live for several weeks in the National Park at Tenerife and visited La Palma during the blossom season for two weeks. Most scenes were shot with a Sony A7sIII and A7rIII with several different lenses and some motion gear.
This film woudn't be possible without the great software for processing timelapse stuff LRTimelapse (lrtimelapse.com/?ap_id=timelapse - affiliate link) and of course the LRTimelapse Pro Timer 3 (amzn.to/3cBAlJv - affiliate link) was a great help too.
