Thanks for transcribing one of the funkiest bass lines of Gaye’s career and of the early 80’s!

So grateful for this... I discovered this song almost ten years ago, when I started playing the bass. Immediately, I fell in love with this amazingly creative and melodic bass line but felt like something unreachable at the time. Finally today, I can say I'm able to play it :D

It is frank Blair on this track, really a great baseline. There’s actually some drama surrounding the release of this album. Apparently Marvin didn’t think it was ready and frank took it to the record company and might have been involved in the mixing of it all behind marvin’s back.

Load of great bass lines on that album. How about Jackie Wilsons "Don't you know I love you" cover. It's either jamerson or Babbitt playing but either way it's beautiful.

haha! :) Aren't you the one who called me a "Geezer"? :P ....I prefer "curmudgeon" ;) If you can keep the future insults to a minimum I'll have a listen to your song and see what I can do ;)...might take a few days though...thanks :)

Greg Fairweather eh? Insult? In the UK "what a geezer" is a compliment!! I refer you to wiki..A “geezer” in the UK means just any guy (bloke) in general regardless of age (but often an adult). A UK geezer is the equivalent of the American 'dude.' ... The UK geezer also doesn't have the somewhat derogatory or negative connotation that the American geezer has either. I should have said "what a dude" 😉

Oh, my apologies...I took the North American meaning...I really should start giving people the benefit of the doubt ;) No hard feelings? :)

This bassline is crazy, no-one would ever do this in "pop" music nowadays, way too jazzy, it's why i listen to mostly older music, it's more adventurous. You nailed the bassline but not the sound. The bass sound is key to this track: not much low end, quite a lot of distortion (which naturally rolls off the subs), very mid-rangy, driving sound. Too much low end and sub makes it sound too heavy. IMO.

I noticed all comments didn’t mention that this bass line has awesome appreggio runs that would be great for students learning bass guitar!
