When he says "all the dead boys in our hometown" he means it literally. Suicide is a massive problem especially in poorer communities where drink and drug use are prevalent, like the town he is from.

His songs are generally about growing up in neglected northern town, privilege in society, his resentment of the government and the way they have treated the working class over the years. His songs are very politically fuelled and come to terms with realities of losing his own friends to suicide, abusive relationships, his troubles communicating with his father, plus much more. Lyrics from a song on his new album read: "I'm terrified of having kids But I'm damned if I give up tonight I must repel the dying light For Mom and Dad and all my pals For all the ones who didn't make the night" Would recommend The Dying Light, Aye, Seventeen Going Under, Hypersonic Missiles and The Borders. He also does lots of covers of Springsteen- probably the best covers i've heard of his work so far! There are plenty worse ways to spend your time than reacting to (or privately listening to) his two albums. ETS!

You get Sam! I was Joe's roadie when he played in Lisbon, he was amazing. Seeing him become part of SF makes perfect sense. Great NE band who come with a social conscience. Perfect

@@65sneaky A big fan mate. I saw him for the first time in Paris in August 2019 on a side stage at Rock En Seine and half of the crowd didn’t seem to know who he was/didn’t take much notice. It’s so weird going from that to seeing him the other week in Cardiff or seeing him sell-out the arena in Newcastle etc. His voice and songs were made for arenas and stadiums, I’m just thankful enough to say that I saw him pre-arena. Will be interesting to see where his song writing goes from here!

Arguably, Sam Fender is the one of the best songwriters of his generation. He's such a superb and interesting musician...Check out Seventeen Going Under, Play God (Vevo Live), Will We Talk, Get You Down (Live on Later), Spit of You (Live from The Tonight Show), Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored and Back to Black (Live Lounge), The Dying Light (Winter Edit). Honestly, Hypersonic Missiles and Seventeen Going Under are 2 of the best albums crafted recently...just flawless.

Sam is a gifted songwriter his new album Seventeen going under is phenomenal. As is the title track. You won't see Sam in the gossip columns he is northern lad through and through, Geordie with a lot of soul. He writes lyrics that the youngsters identify with. I LOVE HIM. He tackles subjects that others feel uncomfortable with and that is a good thing. This one is about male suicides especially in the young lads. Boarders is great then you have That Sound those come from his album Hypersonic Missile. I love artists who can write deep and meaningful words and Sam does it with class.
