Here my picks: 90 Judas Priest - Painkiller 91 Heavens Gate - Livin' in Hysteria 92 Dream Theater - Images and Words 93 X Japan - Art of Life 94 Stratovarius - Dreamspace 95 Gamma Ray - Land of the Free 96 Helloween - Time of the Oath 97 Symphony X - Divine Wings of Tragedy 98 Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle-Earth 99 Immortal - At the Heart of Winter So painful to leave out Death, Running Wild, Savatage, Iced Earth, Emperor, Bathory , Fates Warning, Morbid Angel, Rage and others. Great fun, guys (and gal)! 🤘 I knew in advance, that Melanie and Simon would mention a lot of the same albums from the decade, that I also find essential, but Alan was the one, who surprised me the most with his excellent picks like Fates Warning, Danzig and Sanctuary; bands I absolutely adore, but wouldn't immediately have thought of mentioning myself. 👍Already looking forward to the Heavy Metallurgy team going though the years 2000-2009... 😎

Tough but awesome topic. My experience of the '90s is second hand as I was born in '97 but I have connected with more albums from the '90s than the '80s so I can actually pick an album from each year. Here is my list. 1990: Entombed - Left Hand Path (death metal) 1991: Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger (grunge/alternative metal/heavy metal/sludge metal) 1992: Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky (black metal) 1993: Dissection - The Somberlain (melodic black metal/melodic death metal) 1994: Bolt Thrower - ...For Victory (death metal) 1995: Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane (melodic black metal/melodic death metal) 1996: Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun (melodic black metal/melodic death metal) 1997: Hades - The Dawn of the Dying Sun (black metal/Viking metal) (Aeternus was so f'ing close) 1998: Aeternus - ...and So the Night Became (melodic black metal/atmospheric death metal) 1999: Windir - Arntor (melodic black metal/Viking metal/folk metal)

A hard topic with so many of the extreme genres having their peak year/s in the 90s. Here's my list - I'm 38 but only listening to metal for ~10 years. 1990 Entombed - Left Hand Path 1991 Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream 1992 Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes. Death - Human possibly close, its a borderline 9.5/10 for me. 1993 Immortal - Pure Holocaust. Katatonia very close behind. 1994 Oof this is the first really tough one! Have to give it to Abigor like Simon. Dawn and Hades are pretty much equal, and Gorement a little behind those. 1995 Death - Symbolic. Abigor very close. 1996 Sacramentum - Far Away From the Sun 1997 I hate to have to relegate Aeturnus, but Borknagar - The Olden Domain is a special album for me. 1998 Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork. Borknagar again, and Blind Guardian very close for me. 1999 Immortal - At the Heart of Winter Predictable maybe but it is what it is - I could make a list sans DM/BM all of stuff well in the 90%s ratings for me, the above are pretty much all my 10/10 albums.

Alan, too wierd about the FATES WARNING cd. That was the first cd I owned as well, and yes, I didnt have a cd player either. I was just flabbergasted to hear another person say they had the same Obscure experience. And...I was not able to play it in anyone elses player. I do think someone dubbed it on tape for me, but I cant recall. I also had IRON MAIDEN's first release and Ozzy SPEAK OF THE DEVIL on vinyl. With no record player!! At least I could look at the cool artwork on the covers...

This is fun. Lots of good choices. I feel 1990 is one of the greatest years for metal ever: my favorite King Diamond (The Eye), my favorite Judas Priest (Painkiller), my favorite Saint Vitus (V), and my favorite Megadeth (Rust in Peace), which is also my favorite metal album ever. Four top offerings by four legacy bands. Plus Artillery's By Inheritance is great and the ultra-nasty glam metal pinnacle WWIII (Mandy Lion / Vinny Appice / Tracy G). Each one of these six gems is worthy of an Album of the Year title. A peak year for metal releases, probably the peak for me. Cirith Ungol's Paradise Lost and Carcass' Necroticism battle for 91. At the Heart of Winter, Domination, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, Heartwork, Wolf's Lair Abyss, Nattens Madrigal, and Imaginations from the Other Side also ruled that decade.

There are some hard choices up until '94, but after that point they get easy for me, then again in the past few years I listen to stuff from the 90s instead of the 80s about 10% of the time. 1990 - Hammerheart 1991 - Twilight of the Gods 1992 - Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism 1993 - Under a Funeral Moon 1994 - Be Forewarned 95 - Panzerfaust 96 - Blood on Ice 97 - Come my Fanatics 98 - Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult 99 - At the Heart of Winter

@@sothis1448 As you can see i am not well versed in the 90s, so lots are albums from bands I enjoy most of their discography. I could have picked Left Hand Path or debut Deicide for '90, or Tortured Existence or Blessed are the Sick for '91, but Epic Bathory has more meaning to me than those absolute blood boilers mentioned above. Same goes for '94, there are many black metal albums very high in my opinon from that year, but Pentagram just means more to me personally. Cheers Brother!

For me 91 is the hardest year to pick a favourite from, insane year for Death metal. Armored Saint-Symbol of Salvation, Skid Row-Slave to the Grind, Paradise lost-Gothic and Sepultura-Arise (their most death metal sounding album) are some of the best non-Death metal releases of 91. If I had to pick from Death Metal I would say Entombed-Clandestine because I listened to it the most.

Great year for sure. My " formative" years as a little lad, tape trading in Jr high. Who the hell knew I would look back and realize how amazing that time and music was? I lived way in the woods. Buddies at school would tape me episodes of HEADBANGERS BALL and wvery wednesday night was the " War Dance" on WPCR. Plymouth State College Radio. Holy shit, I heard more good stuff on there, Carcass, Type O, Sepultura...
