If my memory serves me correctly, Testament's The Legacy was the first non-Metallica thrash album that I listened to at the start of my metal journey at 13. I love that record to death. I am always chasing the high that album gives me. Not many thrash records match it, let alone come close.

I agree. It was a magical record that still holds up. Thanks for watching.

Man, I feel blessed to have many of these records in my collection. What an incredible and, like you guys said, sometimes underrated year in metal. So many fantastic releases! Two of the albums in my top 3 favorite albums ever are from 1987, and none of you showed them. I would have brought so many unknown stuff along, hahaha.

You will get your chance, Thomas! We will get you on at some point. Start taking naps NOW! Haha. Thanks for watching!

Love your channel for the fact you rarely show popular albums. We all get tired of seeing the a-list bands (I got tired of it by the time I was 15 years old, 25 now). Show me something I've never seen and I'm a happy camper, rather than something I have known since I was in grade school. Keep it up Thomas!

Just catching up on some of this today, great to see Jurgen and Mike on form tonight. 1987 was huge for me 16 years old, and a Saturday job giving me funds to buy records and go to gigs. Not a year for the big hitters maybe, but one of my favorites for sure.

Absolutely. The whole 85-89 run was HUGE for my high school years and musical development as well. It sounds like we’re the same age. Thanks for watching!

I am born 1974 and it started in 1986 with a tape i got for my birthday in february. It was TS - Under the blade. In december i bought my first lp. It was Possessed - Beyond the gates. In 1987 i bought many albums.

85-89…. What a great run for metal. It was my high school era and everything hit just a little hard it seems. Thanks for watching!

Guns n Roses were my introduction to heavy metal at that time. The Sweet Child of mine single was my personal gateway into metal. Slash wore a Metallica Damage Inc tee in promo photos & Duff wore a Slayer tee and that was it for me.

There’s no denying the impact and excellence of Appetite. Such a solid and even exciting album. As the year drag on, I think we’re all sick of the hits on it, but that’s not the bands fault. Thanks for watching!

Listening to the intros I feel old Started listening to metal in 1979. Was still in Junior school I was lucky older sister and friends older brother listening to metal and rock. My starting point was Unleashed in the East, AC/DC, Slade, Sabbath, Quo and Rainbow I was 18 in 1987 There are no bad years in the 80s. 80 being the best. Even if there was less

There’s no denying the power of metal in the 80s. Even though getting older has its downside, I’m thrilled I lived through the era of music that I did.

It’s true! Kiss are my favorite band AND the band I love to hate. It’s purely a nostalgia thing. Takes me back to more innocent times

@@HeavyMetallurgy I really get that, man. It was my first band ever as well and will always remain “my band”. At least all versions up to 1992, I can do without anything after that. I owe a lot to this band and it still makes me as happy and proud to be a fan like I was on day one as a kid.

Only the underground is real, hey Jurgen!!!!

I was about to use the Fischer's ''death'' version of the catchphrase, but underground is more encompassing , thus my thumbs-up.

@jocksilver7 I just love people who are as deep into it as myself. I'm fairly young, but just a bit obsessed (and a history major, so I kinda get overly obsessed with any kind of music history).

When Mike stated that Kiss sounded English to him, it made total sense. Paul has confessed multiple times that he loved English Rick and would “borrow” riffs he loved and re-write them. So yes… England strikes me as the heart of Kiss in a way. Thanks for watching!

Marty, those radio station records are pretty cool timepieces , but if you want to clean the marker off i have always had success with some 99% alcohol and a q-tip (as long as the cover is somewhat glossy, which that Death record looks to be pretty slick). Just in-case you ever feel like tidying them up. Still cool the way they are because they show how DJs handled and played the records for the public.
@HeavyMetallurgy11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I’ve also had someone recommend a mild mix of goo gone. I go back and forth on whether to attempt cleaning them up or just leaving them as the time piece they are. Cheers

Beyond those classic metal bands, UK also had the progenitors of grindcore and goregrind (Napalm Death and Carcass)

Absolutely. The grind scene really was huge for the UK as was NWOBHM, goth, etc. Thanks for watching!
@MexicanradioDJ11 ай бұрын
The US had crossover we had Grindcore In terms of commercial bands. Metal mickey is right. KISS were popular pre Crazy Nights most of the albums were knocking on the Top 10 in the UK playing big tours. Pop metal boosted them. As did the Bill and Ted single.
@HeavyMetallurgy11 ай бұрын
Out of all the eras, Crazy Nights and Hit in the Shade were the hardest for me to take. The band was trying soooo hard to shine in the glam era. They succeeded I think on Asylum. Some good songs for sure. BUT what came after sounded tired and infected with crabs. Haha. Thanks for watching!

Testament’s the Legacy the greatest thrash metal album ever? Bold statement there. It’s all subjective. Definitely the best Testament record no doubt. Best of 1987? Maybe. Of all time? For me? No. It’s weird with making a statement like that. I definitely have my personal favorite. However in making a statement like that I personally have consider it’s influence and impact and for that?? Slayer’s Reign on Blood. No argument. That impact that record had shadows every other thrash album. If you look up thrash in the dictionary that’s the album that is the best definition. Is it MY personal number 1? no. But I have to take the scene as whole and that one set the bar every thrash band tried to beat after it’s debut. When I see that at the top of lists, I don’t argue. Because I honestly can’t. I have push my personal tastes aside This was a really fun stream. Great picks by all.
@HeavyMetallurgy11 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the show. For me, The Legacy is a special album for sure. My fave thrash album? That could change on a weekly basis for sure. But thinking about it, yes, Slayer influenced countless bands, but very few possess an EXACT Slayer sound. A few for sure, but I hear a lot more bands that actually SOUND like Testament at times. Perhaps they had an easier style to replicate? Anyway, Testament has had a long and largely fantastic career. The Legacy is indeed a fave, but so is The Formation of Damnation. Cheers Alex!

Show No Mercy is the only Slayer I regularly listen to.... Something about the traces of melody, some of Araya's best vocals, the warmth of the recording, etc. The later, more tight and aggressive stuff is fine, but doesn't have the same charm.

Some guys were seekers in their younger years (ie. Jurgen and Marty) and some were more picky/less underground in their tastes. Sometimes that curiosity can pay off, and sometimes you end up finding a lot of shit bands, fun of the gamble.
