Repaired a crack ages ago on a Lincoln Town Car 4.6 - block cracked from someone running straight water in cold of winter - but it cracked in the valley of the engine - bought car cheap like that. Removed intake. drilled holes to stop crack. grinder to clean area up. sanded with coarse grit. used alcohol or something to clean area. packed with JB weld. Fixed. Drove car like that for many hundreds of miles no issue. Trying to weld a cast iron block is a nightmare.

The mystery of the cracked block
@n1umj2 ай бұрын
I knew a guy, he raced at a local short oval track who had a similar crack in the block. He couldn't afford an engine so he did the JB weld thing. He figured it was worth a try but never expected it to hold the following race week. He actually got a season and a half out of it before he bought another guy out with an all round better engine. For all I know that engine is still out there as a spare to this day, I'll have to ask him next time I talk to him. He could not believe it held but I've seen so much worse. Knowing him it's either still his spare or one of his friends has it.

I've used a product called belzona with success. It's expensive but works great. In fact, cat recommended it for cylinder deck repair on a 3512 engine that I used to maintain. As far as I know, it's still there.
@iFixJunk2 ай бұрын
I'm familiar with Belzona, but not for an application like that. Their tech support will guide you through certain..."off-label" uses, though. It IS expensive, but if you research the product and learn how it came into development and use, it's pretty impressive.

Another option is called Lock-N-Stitch. I fixed a cracked boat engine 4 years old. Boat gets used every weekend and hasn't leaked a drop. A little labor intensive, but way less than an engine swap

I had a 1956 Allis Chalmers tractor that I was rebuilding, all new parts, my brother-in-law decided to “help” me with the assembly of the engine while I was at work. Service manual was right there but he knew better and assembled the engine like a SB Chevy, WRONG!! The wrist pins “floated” in the rods and were bolted to the pistons, were Siamesed on the crankshaft. Later after everything was done he started the engine and immediately heard noises that it wasn’t supposed to make. Upon disassembly the number 3 cylinder was found to be deeply scored from the wrist that was assembled wrong. Removing no.3 cylinder assembly, cleaning the liner thoroughly I mixed enough JBWeld to put a light coat in the groove to let it cure overnight. The next 2 days I did the same until I had built it up above the liner surface beside it. I then slowly started to hone the cylinder until there was nothing but a dark line in the bore, you couldn’t feel any imperfection. I then reassembled the engine according to the book while dear brother in law watched. The repair was still holding solid 13 years later when I sold the tractor, I became a true believer in JBWeld at that point. Point is never ever let a brother in law work on anything you really need.

Thanks sir interesting vedio. 👍 I put new plugs and plug wires on 217 yukon denali. I'm 67, never seen or heard of this before, as one of the spark plug wires would pop, or unclip as soon as you remove your hand from the plug wire. I had to go back to GM dealer to get that plug wire replaced. What is up with the quality parts now days from MEXICO. 😢

I know about 5 years & 8 months ago when I removed the cylinder head gaskets in my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine in my Holden Commodore I blew any engine coolant which was in the bolt holes out with compressed air prior to fitting the cylinder head gaskets & new cylinder head bolts. Apparently what happens if you don't do that the water which gets trapped underneath the cylinder head bolts boils when the engine is hot & since the steam generated has nowhere to go it acts like a pressure cooker then it can crack the engine block. I would get the engine block welded by someone who can weld cast iron,I certainly wouldn't use JB Weld on a customers vehicles engine although the metal reinforced type of metal filler may do the job, it's just JB weld doesn't seem to do well when the engine gets really hot & it's exposed to engine oil,I mean if it's used inside of the engine. I know that I cracked the right hand front corner of the aluminium alloy oil pan so I got a welder to TIG weld that corner of the oil pan,some people do use JB weld to try and fix that but I wasn't confident that it would hold & I didn't want to get underneath the car to rip the oil pan off again to fix it properly the second time. The car was unregistered at the time & I didn't want it to fail the blue slip inspection which is required in New South Wales in Australia whenever the car is to be registered & if it's been unregistered for more than 3 months. They're also required if the engine is replaced to make sure that the donor engine isn't stolen, it's required when a change of engine number needs to be lodged with the Roads and Maritime service !

It's easier to do a quality weld on aluminum than cast iron but both CAN be welded by soneone who knows what they're doing.

@mtut2 ай бұрын
Whatever they used to band-aid it is part of the equation. You'd pretty much have to take it off to see what the metal looks like. With these monkey snot repairs, the adhesion to the metal is never 100% and oil can travel under it pretty far from the source. That would be my biggest problem agreeing that the block is cracked. With such a large patch on there it's hard to definitively rule out the intake and head gaskets.

my dads car had an exhaust leak. he insisted that the gaskets were in perfect condition so to "fix" the leak, he put JB all over the edge. it actually worked for about a week but then slowly started melting. he still believed there was no problem with the gaskets and that car went to the crusher with the original gaskets.
