I heavily debated calling this A Man Who Hates Bad Writing Plays Heavy Rain. It is absolutely bad writing, but the game is so absolutely bad and stupid that I felt calling it that would be letting it off easy hahaha. It's mad to think that this game was so critically acclaimed back in the day

I knew nothing about this game before watching this video. After seeing the opening cutscene and seeing your title, I genuinely thought that this game was a parody of overdramatic interactive movies. Honestly, I only found out it wasn’t the case when Jason died lol 😂

I believe this game had good ideas and the whole video game/movie hybrid was completely new for the industry. I think this game broke ground for the genre of interactive story games. Regardless of the bad story telling, it came out at the right time similar to Avatar and it's amazing cgi, but does anyone care about Avatar's writing? No, it's forgettable and pretty bad. This game should be remembered as an innovative video game where you can turn your brain off and ignore all of the ridiculous writing decisions.

@@allyli1718 Funny thing is that I've read a couple of times that the actors for Connor and Hank actually improvised a lot of stuff during their interactions that stayed in the game but Cage didn't like. So ironically, what's arguably the best part of any Cage game is also the part that he was involved the least. Though to be fair, I don't think even in the other parts DBH was as bad as some of the stuff in the other games. It was at its worst very cringe, not pull-my-hair-out terrible like some of the plot canyons in the other games (ESPECIALLY Heavy Rain).

Turning a forced sexual assault around to a "you go girl" girlpower moment when the character was introduced in a shower scene. Wow.
@LordofFullmetal
@LordofFullmetal Жыл бұрын
I agree the writing is really sexist, and David Cage probably is a creep - but to be fair, you don't HAVE to do the shower scene. I literally tested this because I had the same concerns. You can do the entire sequence without ever getting in the shower. That is a choice the PLAYER is making. In fact, all the nudity is like that except for Ethan's shower scene. Madison gets exactly as naked as YOU want her to. Even in the sexual assault scene - there's literally a trophy you can get for getting her through that scene without taking her clothes off. The game rewards you for NOT stripping her. This is fairly consistent to David Cage games, and it's honestly a step-up from some other games that literally just force this content on you. Because it is choice-based gameplay, it is entirely possible most of the time to skip the scenes involving nudity or SA. It shouldn't be there at all - but being able to choose whether you partake or not is a good first step.

I know. Though honestly, some kids are just runners. Some kids do that - they will just sprint off for no reason. It's like, before they reach a certain age (which in fairness Jason should be above - but also he was written to be younger), kids are literally actively TRYING to unalive themselves. So much of your life revolves around stopping them, because if you leave them alone for two minutes they'll be doing something that could unalive them. Here's a fun fact! All the criminal shit Ethan does while trying to save his son? Yeah, all of that is punishable. For instance, commiting a murder because you were forced into it under duress (Such as loved one being threatened) is still considered murder, though most would also consider there being mitigating circumstances. So yes, at the end of this? Ethan would probably face several years in prison.

Another fun fact I've seen no one mention besides the cut paranormal stuff Originally, it was gonna be, depending on your actions throughout the game, the killer would be 1 of the 4 protagonists. However, it seems this was cut super early, which is why Shelby has the scene of him finding the dead shop owner and being confused as fuck as to when he died, even though the ending sequence shows HE was the one who did it. Likely these two scenes would've been in different routes, and not in the same mostly linear one.

The police suspecting Ethan as being the origami killer makes so little sense that it honestly makes my brain hurt. The main evidence they found is that he has an origami figure however surely the police already know that every victim is given an origami figure so why is there first response that obviously it is because he is the killer and not because he is a known victim and all victims have origami. Another question is why the fuck do they think he would kidnap his own son if he wanted to kill his own son surely he would’ve done that first.

They could've very easily made it that Scott was the driver that killed Jason. He was a prolific serial killer. Then, just on a normal day, he accidentally drives over the braindead son of some rando. He went into shock over driving over a child by accident. He starts blaming the father who's in a coma. He starts planning all the insane stuff for the father because in his deranged mind, it was the father's fault the child died, not his. With all the planning, he doesn''t kill anymore since his obsession is in a coma and all that. Boom, you get why Scott would be so elaborate and insanely committed to punishing Ethan, why the killer exactly didn't hit during Ethan's coma, and makes it at least feasible that Ethan was the killer, got knocked out, then in desperation did some stupid shit with his child to cover his tracks as a "victim". Not gonna say this is smart (in fact it's still contrived and dumb), but at least the premise would at least kinda work.

@@youtube-kit9450 the only problem is that it removes his alibi but their is still no evidence to support ethan being the killer and it would still make no sense for them to think Ethan was the killer. It would make sense if ethan decided not to go to the cops like maybe he saw the letter earlier and through a combination of not wanting to get held up in a police station and wanting to prove that he was a good father, he doesn’t tell the police. Then the police discover that Shaun has gone missing and begin to suspect Ethan as the killer because they think thats the reason he didn’t report his kid as missing because he didn’t want the police to potentially find out.

@@sonofpears4691 As I said, "it's still contrived and dumb", but at least the police just look desperate by clinging at "hey the killer only was active when he wasn't in a coma" instead of looking like complete morons. Nothing can fix the writing, but small changes can at least make small improvements.

I have yet to watch a gameplay of this where someone doesn't spam the "JASON!" button. Like EVERYONE does it and it gets me every. single. time. Like I know it's meant to be a serious moment and I know what's about to happen, but the complete lack of urgency or enthusiasm Ethan's (honestly, everyone's) voice actor has in that moment is hysterical. lmao

It's hard to do emotional delivery when a French actor is trying his best just to not let their accent slip. They should have just gotten English-speaking actors for the dub instead of re-using the French ones.

My favourite fact about this game is that David Cage initially had a supernatural element with some kind if psychic connection between ethan and the origami killer (possibly similar to Beyond 2 Souls gimmick). However, in order to make the game more 'grounded' and 'realistic', David Cage cut it entirely very last minute. This is why there is so much that makes zero sense and goes completely unexplained in the final game. Specifically Ethans 'blackouts' where he finds himself on the corner of the street where the origami killer was born with a piece of origami in his hand. In the final game, it makes zero sense meaning the whole "Ethan=Killer" thing becomes maybe the worst and most confusing red herring of all time.

Not only that -- first "Jason" wandered away into the shopping mall even while his dad was still telling him not stay... then wanders outside and crosses the street for no reason... and then "Jason" just blindly walked out into traffic, not looking left or right, not even running, just walking into the path of a car without even looking at it.
