Great stuff there. You're right about the challenge of wanting to get the snowy shots and not being a hazard to yourself and others on the roads.

Fantastic video. I was born about 150 miles East of Harrisburg, West of Philly, and very near Valley Forge...and the Reading railroad tracks. Your video reminded me of my teenage years when I first became a railroad fan. Standing in snowstorms, watching long freights fly toward Philly. Nothing like it then, and nothing like it now. Thanks for the memories.

One of my all time favorite train vids. It's go it all - snow, cold, plenty of different power, meets (one with a crossing gate bicep curl), train disappearing into the snow like a ghost. Excellent excellent video. Bravo. Liked.

Thanks Kevin, and I would agree with you there. My favorite time to shoot trains is any time but the summer, simply because the sun is too high and the heat is too intense for crisp images except in the early AM or late PM, plus, the snow in the winter is an added layer of entertainment.

You have a way with meets sir, I will give you that! This is the first good long snow fanning video I've seen all year, some people stay far away from scenes like this, but I for one welcome them. Those who don't are truly missing out on one of the most fun (and cold) shows in railroading. I'm really hoping for similar conditions when I'll be out your way at around this time next week, my AWD can take it!

They are buffer cars added for safety-in other words they are a cushion. They add an extra layer of safety in the rare event that another train would rear end the ethanol train if it were stopped at an interlocking (this would likely be a low speed incident). Also, I can imagine they help protect while switching or coupling locomotives to the train.

Yeah certainly, thankfully it wasn't a very wet snow. I felt confident in my truck with 4WD and all-weather tires and was more concerned about those who didn't seem to get the memo. I had no trouble driving around but I obviously had to stay very local. Thanks for watching.

I've been watching trains a very long time. I gotta say, (while not the weirdest).. The train at 12: 25 is one of the stranger trains I've seen in a while. Love your work.

Yes, thankfully they were not removed when they installed new lights and crossing bells. However, this was the Reading Railroad.

Excellent! So much great rail action in PA. I went to Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, and I have fond memories of Penn Central and Conrail freights on the Port Road line, freights pulled by E44s and GG1s. I was also close to the Harrisburg-Philadelphia main line, and recall the Broadway Limited blowing through town with a GG1 on the point. Thanks for posting this terrific footage!

When freight trains run at highway speeds, railroads can compete with the trucking industry. Each container or piggyback on a freight train is one less truck on our highways. Trucks beat the hell out of our highways, which results in rutted pavement, and uneven concrete sections. Fewer trucks on our highways means fewer accidents caused by truck drivers who fall asleep at the wheel from being pushed too far and being fatigued. The railroads however need to do something about the problem with hoodlums spraying the freight cars with that unsightly graffiti.
