I was going to say the exact same thing. Lost a lot of momentum and penetration in that arrow due to the erratic flight. A heavier arrow is only a start to increasing penetration. The bigger changes come with high FOC.

Here's a few things: bare shaft tuning will help your arrows and grouping. You can nock tune each arrow and that will help a lot. Also, 550 is good for deer, 650 is better for hogs due to their toughness. You need to collab with Troy from Ranch Fairy. Also, 3 blade has better accuracy typically but don't do as well against hone compared to a single bevel. Each type has its trade offs.

Hey Scott I hope you see this comment. I was wondering what kind of broad heads would you recommend for a 500 narrow heavy arrow for deer. I usually use 350-375 weight arrows with fixed broadheads for years. I was just wondering for deer hunting if there was a much better option with heavy arrows or it doesn't really matter that much. I was thinking about getting the Magnus black hornet, black hornet serrated, or the Magnus stinger buzzcut. I heard there some of the best and most accurate broadheads especially with heavy arrows with the 125 grain broadhead.
@scottbryant6349
@scottbryant6349 Ай бұрын
@@seanmcnew9304 I tried heavy for a few years and I'm at 560 because of my draw haha. If you have a shorter draw, that 450 is plenty good with a fixed head like the Magnus Stingers with bleeders. Or if you have good poundage and more than 28" draw, I switched to Sevrs and their new hybrid heads are really nice.

It’s your bow tune my guy, you see how much fletching wobble there is during arrow flight? That’s going to decrease penetration more then anything eles will, this allows the front of your arrow to flex on impact causing the arrow not to be entering the animal straight anymore, also maybe spine up one setting that helps.

Another thing to consider with light vs. heavy arrows is deflection. If you are shooting in windy conditions or in areas with lots of underbrush, Heavy arrows definitely are an advantage. Heavy arrows will cut through wind better and deflect way less off of twigs. Excellent video!

Since force = mass * acceleration, I think a heavy slow arrow will penetrate deeper. As speed increases so does air resistance, drag, and any tiny imperfections in the shot are magnified, but with a heavy arrow all you need to do is aim slightly higher

Given two arrows of the same diameter and head, the one with greater momentum will penetrate further. With bows, that will almost always be the heavier arrow, because a bow will transfer more energy to heavier arrows (efficiency improves).

You missed one important step when you installed your inserts in those new shafts. You will find if you first remove the nocks before installing inserts they push in twice as easily. By leaving the nock installed you creat pressure while installing insert since there is NOT anywhere for displaced air to go. Also purchase a cheap squaring tool to square the ends of your shafts after cutting. Well worth the investment of a spinner/squaring set sold on eBay for a mere $12.99. Plus you then have a spinner to use to check your shafts before cutting if not yet fletched to ensure both ends spin true. Some arrow shafts need to be cut from both ends to achieve a straight shaft.

From a physics perspective, your bow stores a set amount of energy when you draw it back. It gives all this stored energy to the arrow (or most of it, losing energy to friction as it snaps the string forward) in kinetic energy (KE). KE = 0.5 * Mass * Velocity ^2. This means that more velocity will give you more energy at the target than more mass, at the target being key here. Most arrows lose the same energy in flight due to air resistance (same shape) so the majority of the energy loss will be in poor bow tuning, making tuning incredibly important. This means a poorly tuned heavier arrow will retain more energy in flight than a lighter arrow since more of the KE is in the mass, which is obviously unaffected. TLDR: Faster better but less forgiving of poor tuning, heavier worse but more forgiving of poor tuning. Edit: I think.
@Subtlenimbus
@Subtlenimbus 3 жыл бұрын
A bow stores energy, and a percentage of that energy is transferred to the arrow. Arrows of different mass will have different efficiencies from the same bow. If they are too light, bow shock will indicate energy that didn’t go to the arrow. The lighter arrow won’t always have more kinetic energy. It depends on where the sweet spot is for the grains per pound of the bow/arrow combo. I chronoed 530 grain vs 650 grain arrows from a 50 lb @ 31” Korean trad bow, and the heavier one actually ended up with more energy. It was slower, but got more energy from the bow evidently. Also, momentum (mass*velocity) seems to be more important when it comes to broadhead arrows. They typically go completely through animals and cut along the way. If they are blunts, energy is key.
@Marmocet
@Marmocet 2 жыл бұрын
You and Violet are almost correct. A bow stores a fix amount of energy at full draw. When you release the string, some of that energy has to go into moving the bow's limbs, the string, any other moving parts of the bow, and also into overcoming friction internatl to the bow's limbs, as well as friction between the arrow shaft and the bow, and between moving parts of the bow and the air. This gobbles up some of the bow's energy budget. The rest of the energy that remains can go into moving the arrow. You can think of the energy that gets gobbled up as the bow's "virtual mass". You can think of it as acting like a weight that is permanently attached to the string. You can calculate a bow's virtual mass first by finding out how much energy the bow stores at full draw. Once you know this, take an arrow whose weight you know precisely, then shoot it from your bow and measure its speed. Once you know its speed, you can calculate the arrow's kinetic energy. Subtract its kinetic energy from the amount of energy stored by the bow at full draw. Next, multiply that number by 2. Then divide it by the square of the arrow's velocity. The number you get will be the bow's virtual mass. Once you know the bow's virtual mass, you can estimate the bow's efficiency for any arrow mass. Efficiency is equal to the arrow's mass divided by the sum of the arrow's mass and the virtual mass. Written out mathematically, that would be: Efficiency = Mass_arrow / (Mass_arrow + Mass_virtual). This shows you that efficiency always increases as the arrow's mass increases. For example, for a bow with 10 grams of virtual mass, its efficiency with a 10 gram arrow is 10/(10+10) = 50%. For the same bow shooting a 20 gram arrow, its efficiency is 20/(20+10) = 66%. With a 30 gram arrow, its efficiency is 30/(30+10) = 75%. Since the bow's stored energy at full draw is always the same, this means that given two arrows shot from the same bow, one lighter and one heavier, the heavier arrow will always leave the bow with greater kinetic energy and greater momentum. This is why bows shoot more quietly when they shoot heavier arrows than they do when they shoot lighter arrows. Heavier arrows carry more energy away, leaving less energy left over in the bow to make noise.

In your slow-mo footage on the hog it appears the arrow is doing a little bit of cork screwing through the air. This can be bow set up or spine weight vs arrow weight vs where the weight is applied to the arrow. When creating a heavier weight arrow and adding a very substantial amount of weight we have to assure we still have the correct spine of arrow so that it can support the weight without distorting the arrow flight. There is still a maximum amount of weight that can be used at any given poundage before the returns on penetration decrease instead of increase. Even though it initially sounds as simple as attaching more weight there's a lot of science that goes into the highest performance gain from adding weight.

I know you said your arrow was tuned well, and it very well could be, but watching the short clip with the hog show there was a lot of movement on the back end of the arrow. Could have been a release issue, pulled the shot, flinched, punched the trigger etc, but you might have had better penetration if the exact same scenario presented itself again and the shot was perfect.

Hi KG, I don’t know if you know this but an arrow goes into what they call a wobble which makes it look like a waving noodle in the first 15 or 20 yards so you will not get maximum penetration until after the arrow has stabilized itself and going back to straight just a little FYI love your channel bro

At least you picked the best expandable out there. Swhacker is all I use. The pass through are plentiful and the blood trails are massive!

I'm from Australia and from my hunting experience I've gathered there are pros and cons of hitting a shoulder, in some cases it locks their shoulder so they can't run but it also fills your meat with blood and bruises

You should re-do your tests at 40-50 yards. Thats where the heavies make all the difference. Math tells you that the energy is about the same right out of the bow between the light and heavy. but the further the shot = light arrows quickly lose energy where the heavies retain most of their energy.

Shooting over 30 yards with heavy arrows is irresponsible for 95% of hunters. It's too easy to miscalculate yardage and wound the animal.

@@rainingsteel8162 that's why practice is important, especially if your going to shoot a bow.

the expandable blades I use go through both sets of ribs in a crossbow... I guess it all depends on the power of the draw and the kinetic energy.

You're completely missing the point (pun intended) and spreading misinformation. Heavier shafts have the advantage at longer distances as their heavier mass holds energy longer. At close distances like you tested the lighter setup should out perform. What you need to figure out is your median distance to targets when acctually hunting, and train for that. If you're going hog hunting and know most shots will be >30yards practice and sight in using heavier combos. If
