Just an FYI about the o-rings. Viton is good for warmer climates, but becomes brittle in the cold. We had to swap all the viton o-rings for nitrile ones for the downhole tools on the North Slope.

I brought it to their attention and was essentially told to go pound salt and that that was KZbin's doing. I said, "Dude, but it's YOUR advertising content!! midway through, yes Viton would be the right material. HDPE or whatever the basic version is can swell under absorption of oil. I'm referencing this to a farm sprayer that has poly housings with o-rings and mesh filters. If you run an oil product and open the filters to clean them the hdpe oring has stretched and will never seal again. Changing to Viton you won't have that issue. Many times for us it was a brown material vs black.

Correct @@duramaxdad. In the case of the excavator everything is contained in the top section except the hydraulic drive motors in the tracks which use a swivel that goes down through the center of the rotation. Even the motor that makes it rotate is in the top pointing down to a gear on the tracks.

Once the bearing wears past a certain spec.. It will waller out the seal and cause it to leak.. The same thing happens on water pumps on vehicles... and that's when you get the water leaking out of the weep hole. The bearings have to stay in great condition for the seal to stay alive.

Ripsaw would benefit from a Tesla Swap, just to be able to ditch that dodgy braking and steering system. Stick a little diesel generator and a battery bank in where the current motor is, then drive each side of the tracks with a separate motor out of a Model3 or ModelS - Hook the steering wheel to a Toyota electric power steer unit, but using that to tell an Arduino or the like a variable input. Take the throttle pedal output, add or subtract value depending on the steering deflection, and the resulting value sets the output power of the motor. If you want to really mess with people, instead of a diesel generator, use a Gas Turbine.
