The difference between Dan Short and Richard Rawlins is the fact that Dan Short actually has skill, knowledge and ability to build cars.

Dan may have more mechanical knowledge and skill but he doesn't have half the business mind that Rawlings has. Being the money man as you call it is silly seeing how he's far more than that. The same thing happened with American Chopper / OCC. I worked for a company that did a theme bike with them on TV. it was completely undriveable would not start half the time. all because they were in a rush to get it done and completed for TV. granted there was also a ton of drama around the show at that point in time. the fabrication and paint work were incredible. it was just a mechanically unsound, and undriveable because the front tire was way too big. you could maneuver the bike with two people holding it up. in the TV show they one showed the bike being ridden in a straight line. because that is the only direction you could go without tipping the bike over completely. it was basically a cake decoration. great to look at, but unusable.

I used to watch car TV shows a lot but then I gradually stopped. What happened is I got tired of all the fabricated drama that ended up in most of them and that stupid Eeeee, aaaa! sound effect that Discovery injects into EVERY SHOW to make a moment "dramatic". I think the last show I was really into was Top Gear but once Clarkson was fired I never watched it again, there was no point. I also liked the "power block" shows and ones like them. Guys like Stacy David actually building stuff and showing projects that people could do at home in their own garage, all with little to no drama! For now, when I want to watch automotive contest I watch it on KZbin.

The trouble with all these TV shows, is the BS drama to try to pull in non enthusiasts. Although I never saw Diesel Bros here in the UK outside of YT, the other 2 shows were shown on various channels, but I much prefer the YT content, however, the only American car show I actually found entertaining away from the car builds/restorations, was Rust Valley Restorers, although sometimes that could be annoying too. Here in the UK, we have Trucking Heavy (heavy haulage) and Trucking Hell (heavy recovery), we also get the Australian/New Zealand heavy haulage, trucking and recovery shows, While there is still a lot of unnecessary drama, I find they're more relatable than most of the American car shows, but again, the drama is for non enthusiasts or those that work or have worked within those industries. A good example is Lizard Lick Repos and Repo Nut. The former was on TV and every job was drama, the latter was just a YT channel and he tried to avoid drama wherever possible, he'd get in, load up, get out the area and then secure, I know things fell apart for him after his wife died, but he was always good viewing, TV did approach him about filming him, but he declined, as they wanted drama etc, which he didn't, he was true to his viewers. I'll actively try to avoid shows, whether on TV or other platforms that have drama, just for the sake of drama, there are some great vehicle related channels on YT, that probably have more viewers and subscribers than the networks had.
