Dave’s is responsible for his employees and equipment. So Dave has the final say. I was happy to see Alan get his idea about lifting the bucket over the tree passed with the boss and it went smoothly.

The reality is Heavy D is not a recovery expert, not a rigging expert and not a heavy equipment operator. He is a used car salesman . He is a smart businessman and a pretty decent human being. A guy who’s paycheque relies on him getting up everyday to recover vehicles, or hoist and rig equipment, or operate heavy equipment, those guys are the experts. Heavy D is a smart dude, but what he doesn’t know shows quite often. Alan is not an expert either, but obviously years and years of experience gives him a pretty solid knowledge base and he’s able to think outside the box and come up with practical ideas. And before anybody jumps on me I had 32 years as a journeyman doing hoisting and rigging and I don’t consider myself an expert. Overall a good group of guys but they have their limitations.

If you're not going to listen to Alan, why have him at the job site at all? Anyone could have just stood there and listen to you bark commands. You don't always have to be star of the show. When i see operations like this, i would like to make a suggestion: In that situation when both the Excavator and the Hett are pulling, an intercom system ( headsets ) could come in handy, so both drivers and in this case Alan could easily communicate, coordinate the pull. Yes, hand signals work, done that myself many times during construction work, but talking with each other might work even better.

Everything Alan suggested to do in the beginning that Dave said no to, they ended up doing exactly what Alan said and it worked! They always shoot down Alan’s suggestions but end up doing most of them and don’t give Alan any credit for it.
