The Maiden/Mother/Crone triple goddess is a very recent concept written about by Robert Graves if memory serves well, and that is absolutely not something that is tied to her. She is incorporated in the triple goddess format in a lot of Wiccan and other neopagan systems, or just added in a list of "crone like goddesses" but these are not her roots. And she is most definitely older than the greeks. She was often triple formed, with three heads and/or bodies but it has many other meanings, including three ways crossroads. Other symbols include the keys, torches, daggers, snakes, dogs, polecats, owls... etc. But the key is especially popular/used. Hail Hekate. Merry Samhain to those who celebrate it. May her torches illuminates the way.

Quite true. In her genuine history she was never depicted as a crone. There is no genuine connection between Hekate and a crone. I always ignore people who refer to her as maid, mother and crone because they don’t know what they are talking about. They have done no research and are listening to people who are making it up as they go along. These people are narcissists who want to Lord it over a group and have people worship them. They are not interested in truth. They will grab onto any easy trope and mix it in with the rest of their bull. Do the research? If you are not academic read the books by those who genuinely are. Check the credentials of the author and look for references to old manuscripts and historical books. If the books calls her M.M.C. Throw it away.

THANK you! I was looking for this comment! Perhaps the real Hecate is just Trivia? I think her Hindu counter part really could be Kali
@StarlightDreamDolls3 ай бұрын
@@harleygale935 Trivia is her roman name/equivalent, though some roman gods are a bit different from their greek counterparts (and come are perfect copies) so I would not know if they are a perfect match. Kali can be very different to Her in some aspects, but they are both Dark Goddesses. If I could name others, I'd say Ereshkigal, Hel, The Morrigan, etc. Hekate is also conflated with aspects of Selene, Artemis, and some other older goddesses like Brimo, Cybele... She has such a rich history.

The history of evolution of'Εκάτη is absolutely fascinating. From the vague ties to the Eleusinian mysteries to the mounds of sacrificed dogs at her feet to the new-age, hippy dippy dilution of her original anthropological implications is an insight of the devolution of tbe ancient sacred to modern vanity. Hecate is real I've had encounters with her I didn't know who she was. But, I do now. All of her symbology is in my life at this time. For example, I bought two black dogs. They are huge scary looking Mastiffs. Snakes, an obsession with the wheel, her strophalos. So many things i cannot count. i called her "Dark Mother" for 2 years until i figured out who she is. Incredible.

I recently met a man who had her circle tattooed on his chest. A grown man, with a beard and everything. I asked him if he knew what it was and he replied correctly, to my surprise (he didn't seem like the "type" to be knowledgeable in these things, but never judge a book I guess...). Is this common? Does Hecate welcome the masculine into her circle?

Actually, she is one of the original triple goddesses. In ancient Greek art and literature, Hecate is sometimes shown with three bodies or three heads, which reinforces her connection to the triple goddess aspect and her role as a guardian of crossroads. I think you need to be clear about the separation between the beliefs of ancient polytheists and modern neopagans. Maiden/mother/crone - NOT a Greek concept, but a Western European concept that is used in modern pagan religions. Also Robert Graves absolutely made that up when he attributed it to Hecate, with no scholarly backing or research. Hecate’s wheel - as far as I can tell, there is no clear description of it or what it symbolizes. It’s just too tenuous to make all these suppositions, or present those images as a historical symbol when we don’t have a lot of info or ancient visual depictions. Modern pagans may have it as part of their practice, but what they do is not necessarily the same as what the ancients did.
@SymbolSage4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the insightful comment! You’re totally right-there’s a big difference between ancient polytheist beliefs and modern neopagan practices. The Maiden/Mother/Crone concept is definitely more recent and not originally Greek. And yes, the origins of Hecate’s Wheel aren’t clearly documented in ancient sources, so connecting it to historical practices can be tricky. It’s really important to recognize these distinctions when looking at how symbols and beliefs have evolved over time. Thanks for bringing that up!

@Yumbuns89Ай бұрын
The symbol you’re calling Hekate’s wheel has only been associated with her sine the 80s, the symbol itself goes back to pre-Greek Minoan Crete, but was only called the strophalos in the modern era. The strophalos is a Hekatean tool, but is not this image. Maiden, Mother, & Crone are also only modern concepts, not ancient, altho the symbolism in them do apply nicely to Hekate. It’s fine to say all of these things are Hekate’s now, but please be careful to research better and not perpetuate misconceptions.
@beneyles62173 ай бұрын
not maiden mother and crone! Possibly the underworld the world and the heavens or past present and future. the three faces allow her to see all directions at the crossroads...
@SymbolSage3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your perspective! That's a great interpretation - Hecate's three faces representing the underworld, world, and heavens or past, present, and future really adds depth to her symbolism at the crossroads.

I don’t think the triple moon goddess has anything to do with Hecate. Hecate’s triple forms are all her, they’re not different ages at all. Why would she represent the age and stages of woman? I think it presents her dominion over earth, sea and sky.

@@SymbolSage Hekáte being thought of as a triple goddess is only linked only in Neo-Paganism *beliefs*. Neo-Pagans have conflated The Μοίραι (The Fates) with Hekáte only within the past century or less. Her triple form in the her statues only represent her connection to the crossroads or the in-between realms. As a person who works with Hekáte and uses divination, she also confirmed that she is indeed not a triple goddess. I don’t blame you for believing in this common misconception, but it’s important to discern fiction from reality when it comes to deity work. I hope that maybe I’ve given a bit of clarity to this.
