Thank you brother jarhead. You are 100% right about chrome lined barrels, they are not made for accuracy but durability in hostile environments. At 65, I don't see myself making a beach landing nor go into a jungle and spend a week in without A/C, cold beverages and a tour guide. Excellent information on the development of the MR556a4. I'm sure to be picking up one!

What a fantastic video full of great information. I'm glad I stayed tuned until the end. I like the fact that HK is taking strides towards making it easier for us NFA enthusiasts to enjoy their products; with the ease of converting the pistol to an SBR. Obviously, I'm a huge fan of their roller delayed variants (I think the HK trigger pack that they all use is the single greatest invention of all time), but I would love the opportunity to throw a MR556 A4 upper on a M16 lower. Perhaps one day. Thanks for the awesome video!

I ordered that M4 waffle stock from Brownell's for LAV back in 2003. There were several of them he needed sourced for basic parts for the Hk M4 project. He came in one day and asked us to get 3 or 4 sets of RETs, M4 stocks, castle nuts, end plates, springs, and buffers maybe. Something like that. He had his end mill in the back, occassionally came in to do smithing on it. There was a 1911 pistol Smith guild he was part of and they collaboratively built a custom 1911 for George W. Bush around that time. Each guy contributed his specialty area of tradecraft into it, whether it was checkering, slide to frame fit, trigger work, etc. Very cool time to be alive and see crazy things happening in the firearm world.

Great video and overview, and great detailed explanation of why the MR556 currently doesn't come as standard with chrome line barrels. HK's own metallurgy makes it more difficult, yet ironically make it not as necessary. Not to mention that the unlined barrel is supposed to last 12K rounds (competitive or better than most CL barrels made in North America) and you have a lifetime warranty for free replacement. Not to mention that putting a few rounds though it can actually improve accuracy.

I’d love to see some independent test on this. BFV ‘s MR556 was toast in very short time with a thicker bbl and the same steel to the point it was key holing at 15 yds in less than 10k rds. For comparison an of the box Colt M4 bbl lived 5 x as long under the same conditions.

Interesting video as always James. Something worth mentioning about the evolution of the 416 platform is the shifting in priority from the original special forces influence to the larger infantry and commercial user base. A huge (misinformed) critique of the 416 is how its way heavier than an AR15 platform rifle, and they solely attribute this to it being an external piston design. The true reason is because of barrel profile requirements & the rail design. Special forces, particularly Army Special Forces & SEALs needed a barrel (and gas system) that could handle dumping what amounted to an entire combat load of ammo, mission after mission, and not fail catastrophically or have extremely rapid accuracy degradation. They also at the time were the first to widely field suppressors and needed to mitigate zero shift between running the gun suppressed & unsuppressed. The thin car15 and M4 profile barrels, as well as the internal piston of the AR15 (particularly the gas tube) were massive failure points. Likewise the rail had to be very beefy and ridged for both durability and for zero retention for LAM’s. In fact the 416 rail is one of the first modern examples of a free float rail capable of holding zero. So the weight which is often criticized is by design requirements, and is not inherent to a piston gun. The new generation of A5 (and MRA4) being 7.6 ibs stock, being only a few oz more than a standard M4, proves this as a fallacy. (And the weight of the original 416 is also mirrored in the M4A1 block II using socom profile barrels, but everyone conveniently forgets that)

Great video on the 416! Extremely useful to learn more about the different “A” models. Question about the MRA4 barrel: Is the profile & weight identical to a HK416A5? Or is it a much heavier profile? I think a lot of people’s gripes come from potentially thinking that this is merely a 416 barrel without chrome lining. But in your video, the profile looks significantly heavier- closer to a MK12 or Krieger barrel. And nearly all of those barrels are not chrome lined either as they are typically made from a stainless steel. Hearing that the MRA4 barrel steel has a higher chromium content is reassuring from a corrosion resistance perspective. Loved the deep dive. Rare to hear this much info from any manufacturer. I might have to pick up an upper if y’all offer them standalone. Looking forward to new HKUSA launches!

Haven't watched the video yet, but it was really nice for HK USA to confirm in the Q&A earlier on the forums that almost all the weirdness of MR556 was due to a mixture of German and American laws leading to frustrating compromises. The weird thing is that it appears the detent locking receiver pins were just some goofball being ridiculous, as they're fixed on the MR556A4 with no legal improvement in the situation.
@aaronfarnsworth7653
@aaronfarnsworth7653 Ай бұрын
I wonder if the A1 pins would have to be changed to fit an A4 upper?
@superfamilyallosauridae6505
@superfamilyallosauridae6505 Ай бұрын
@@aaronfarnsworth7653 I don't think they would be. It might get a little weird and require a little more force, but the detent should retreat into the pin enough it won't be a real problem. Having finished the video now, I am absolutely astounded they made that change for the HK416A5/MR556A4 and am baffled that somebody in HK is that dumb that they think that matters at all, further that it is worth the cost of machining that, and FURTHER that it's worth weakening the upper receiver's pinhole, and further that it was worth making disassembly so annoying on MR556A1 in the first place. Everything else makes sense because it's legal issues, but this is absolutely absurd. Somebody really dumb has their hands on this rifle series.

When can we expect the sbr to get to "market"? Brownells has none of the a4's; Midway has 16.5" only; PSA has 16.5" only. And a bigger question regarding 11" pistol - you mention sbr paperwork. Is HK not offering the 11" as a pistol where I buy a brace and no sbr paperwork?

I covered in the video, the models we are producing. Right now, it’s all about supply catching up with demand. If you’re waiting for one to just show up, you may be waiting a while. The best advice is always that if you want something, don’t wait for it to be sitting on a shelf, contact your dealer and place the order. That way, you get one directly to you.

Where did they get the designation of 416 from? M4D makes sense since they are trying to copy an M4. Did they just make up a number or was it just the number they were at when they completed it?

Colt was being a whiney biatch and playing lawfare because it considered the M4 name it's exclusive territory. They pulled the same stunt with SIG and the government over the M4's replacement by trademarking M5 for their new ambi-rifle on the commercial market. For some reason, both the feds and SIG caved and instead of XM5 and ultimately M5, they changed it to XM7 and M7. Colt would have been better off spending that time and money on further developing the 901. But their management has been short on creativity and fiscal responsibility for a long time now.

I seem to remember the bolt being spring loaded. If so, was it done to maintain forward pressure during unlocking, as the gas would do on a DI gun?

The bolt of the MR223 is spring loaded to push it forward while the bolt of the MR308 is not spring loaded. Why isn't that the case for the bolt of the MR308?

One question I was hoping to get your expert opinion on: with the reinforced castle nut starting from A5, would it still be necessary to stake the end plates? I notice none of the 416s you showed were staked. Bonus question: the model you used to exemplify the A5 model had the throw lever handguard on. Any idea if that will be available in the States?

Congrats on the Job! Does HK actually pay you or did they know that you would work for them for free anyway.🤣 Will there be MR556A4 in anodized sand color too? I heard HK is moving away from anodizing to ceracoating for their non black rifles. You know anything about that?

@@HKShootingwithDerekG I think that the MR556A1 mag issues were due to it being based (like the M27) on the pre IC-program/A5 416s. The early 416s (and the MR556/-A1) used the HK highly reliable STANAG mag, which it and the blank firing rounds mags were based on the old SA80 mags (NATO standard, but different from newer offerings). This was before the Magpul PMags and HK's later polymer mags came out, which the A5 and later catered for by using USGI/US mil-spec magwell dimensions (namely the angle on the bottom).

@@Chernaudimy point being confusion needing some addressing with the new A4….re-education…..I’ve personally dealt with numerous questions regarding this issue and I think it deserves addressing as the A1 had a stigma for being mag picky when it really wasn’t an issue after the Gen3 magpul was released

@@HKShootingwithDerekG Vickers, in one of his 416 vids years ago said how the production 416 changed the magwell from the flared version he liked. It would have been interesting to see that version. It might have been more popular in the competition world. They flare magwells or add-on flares on everything.
