Thanks for this. I’ve bought an old McConnel last weekend. I’ve never used a trimmer before and I’ve got two years growth. I am expecting a mess but sometimes you gotta just jump in and have a go 😂👍

Hi. I've had this cutter for about 20 years. It seems to work well but as it was our first hedge trimmer I don't have anything to compare it with

I see you don't brother with the stabiliser bars on that trimmer or window guards
@thefunkyfarmer9 жыл бұрын
Chris Hicks ive never used a stabiliser bar because i didn't know it needed one. As for the window guard, ive been hedge trimming for 15 years and haven't had a problem, although i could be just lucky i guess

Why do you have the hedges around your fields?
@thefunkyfarmer10 жыл бұрын
They were planted hundreds of years ago to keep cattle in

why do you cut the hedge rows so low ? why dont you let them grow higher and give the birds some where to nest
@andrewlloyd89882 жыл бұрын
It would ruin the hedge if they get too high as it would become all stalky and not bushy. Bushy protects the nests far better and produces more berries etc
@spencersanderson1894 Жыл бұрын
I think he cuts these hedges every 2 years because he’s on a stewardship scheme. Cutting them low keeps them bushy like matey above me mentioned. He could cut it a little higher every year to stop those knuckles forming that you see on a lot of hedgerows, they are bad for a hedge and eventually it will cause it to die out and become gappy when the stems become too thick. To counter that you could cut it a little higher every year like I mentioned and also every 15-30 years you could lay the hedge to help rejuvenate the hedge and keep it thick! Laying a hedge is how it was done back in the day, before mechanical flails keeping a hedge trimmed to the same height every year with just had tools would become very time consuming and difficult, so the hedges would grow a little bit year by year (still being trimmed but allowed to grow slightly) until they were ready to be laid.

I Cut hedges for a living , one you always cut the side first , two your going to fast bud , three you cut the top twice ,four your using grass flails on the head not hedge cutting flails, Five your making a right mess, Six you roller is set to low on the head ,Sorry Rich
@thefunkyfarmer10 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on most points here Stuart. I've been cutting hedges for 20 years. I don't think it matters whether you cut the tops or the sides first, the end result is the same. Speed wise, yes I might be going too fast but possibly because I was trying to film at the same time. I cut the top several times, this is because this is a hedge that is only trimmed every 2 years under a stewardship scheme, therefore its needs several passes to cut it properly. Not sure about the roller but its not been a problem in the 20 years I've been using this trimmer. Your wrong about the flails.. Yes the finish on the hedge isn't great but this is because of the the 2 year cut which leaves a poorer finish

thefunkyfarmer looks as good as you'll get for a 2 year hedge, stuart must be cutting garden hedges for a living

Stuart Barry put your money where your mouth is and put a vid of you doing some hedges then, if you can make a 2 year growth hedge look any better, i'd like to see it
@stubarry320610 жыл бұрын
Oh bless , I have neither the time or the interest in making a video for you to see a decent hedge cut ,
@joeholgate94459 жыл бұрын
Why do you cut them every to years and not one, because they look nicer every one year?
