I loved watching that! It brings back memories of gathering wild grapes in the woods with my Dad to make jelly. 🥰

Muscadine jam is my new favorite. I discovered it at the farmers market. I like it on toast. I live in Kansas USA. Your jam looks so good. Some of the berries I haven't seen before. Thank you for making videos I love all your content. I live in a small camper.

We don't have sloe berry on Long Island, New York, and sadly my neighbor's wild blackberry brambles grow under the fence and invade my organic garden. It's a battle to dig them up especially in the asparagus. I LOVE blackberries but these have killer thorns that have caused much bleeding/scratches on my legs and arms. I like thornless blackberries & thornless golden raspberries. I don't think I'd ever grow anything with thorns. The damsons look like beach plums which we have along the coast. Beach plums make a wonderful jam. I'm interested in growing elderberries so I can have elderberry essence and elderberry syrup. Adding them to jam is a great idea. thank you for the video. I love this idea of a combo jam I have made jams with one fruit like blackberry or strawberry but as we have damsons sloes and blackberries in abundance here in Warwickshire at the moment I am going to try this jam recipe , thank you!

Lovely jam, thank you for showing us how you make it. The way I make jam is to simmer the fruit first. Once it is completely cooked take the pan off the heat, add the sugar, dissolve it completely, bring it back to full rolling boil for 15 min max. Then test for setting. That way you don't overcook it and avoid the taste of gloopy syrup. Besides, Jam sugar should not boil for long.

I've lived and forged on PEI, eastern Canada, even all of Canada, save BC and the far north, I've never heard of many of those berries. I have wild blackberries and hawthorn berries here and elderberries but the rest are quite foreign I'm afraid. I have made jam one, two or sometimes three (strawberry, blueberry and raspberry) types of berries (but prefer individual berry jam) but have never use pectin of any sort nor have I used a thermometer. I must admit, equal amounts of sugar/berries threw me for a loop, lol but I imagine it tastes quite good. .
@hedgecomber5 жыл бұрын
I'm so bad at making jam without the jam sugar and thermometers help. However, with it, I am a jam ninja. Or perhaps a ninjam 😆 I'm now wondering what other fruits you get growing locally?

@@hedgecomber Oh gosh! That is a question and a half. There are so many just on this property alone. But my favourites here are apple, plum, pear, sweet cherry and peach trees, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry and gooseberry. There are also goji berry, elderberry, serviceberry, haskcaps, hawthorn and dozens of others that I can't remember the names of. This property is much like your own. In fact, my son bought it from a lady who lives not far from you, lol, near Bath, UK. She had a big hand in the placement of the fruit trees.

Currently making a mixed fruit version (blackberry, sloe, elder and crab apple), which is similar to this, but just boil up the fruit together in a little water until the crabs go fluffy, then run through a sieve to get rid of the stones, pips and crab apple skins, before using the liquid to make the jam/jelly (at this point, I sometimes add more fruit to give texture, without the teeth-breaking hazards of sloe stones). Using the sieve means a cloudy jelly, but I haven't got cheesecloth to hand and I don't mind the cloudiness. The crab apples, btw, (which are just cut in half to check for rot and thrown in whole) should provide enough pectin to set it, but depends how 'set' you like it, and you can always make sure by using jam sugar or just powdered pectin. Don't ask me how much - I never measure anything and don't own a jam thermometer!

Oh wow that video was over before I knew it, loved the foraging at the start and the whole jam making process, and your enthusiasm for it :). I love jam, I don’t like it all set like it usually comes from the shop, I like it slightly thick and runny, so you can dollop it on the toast or scone etc. Maybe even a crumpet ! Its bed time. I can NOT go and make something with jam on now ha ha. Loved the vid Jane, well done you.
