Good video, nice 65 Impala. I did the same for my 74 Corvette but got the HEI with the tach drive. I didn't care much for the dual points setup... it runs much better now. 👍

Glad to see you put a K&N oiled filter over the carb. Also, I would have liked to see how easy it started after the HEI distributor and if it took much playing trying to get the timing back where it was needed to be. Good job though!! This will be one of the first things I do if I get that 67 with the original 396!
@ImpalaCadillacRestoModDIY2 жыл бұрын
It actually started easily. You just have to put it in the right place.

Fastest way to drop in the HEI distributor... when looking down over the oil pump shaft, line the open slot in the 11 and 5 oclock position, drop the distributor in with the rotor facing towards the #5 piston, the distributor gear should mesh with the camshaft correctly and it should drop right in flat to the intake clocking you right at the #1 piston.

Thanks for sharing. I will keep this in mind.

not sure where to find the oil pump shaft, but I'll look for it. I bought an HEI for a 59 Bel Air with a 283, which is still in the box. I just bought a 66 Nova 2 Dr hardtop, also with a 283. Do you know if the HEI will also work in the Nova? Thanks
@ImpalaCadillacRestoModDIY Жыл бұрын
@@landynh yes, it will work in any small block Chevy, and also big blocks
@DaWord2011 Жыл бұрын
For the pesky oil pump shaft, you can also just get engine to tdc, drop in the distributer to get it to point to #1, and give the engine a bump of the starter (obviously don't start it) and it will drop right in. Works for me everytime.

I installed one over 18 years ago after my point closed, back fired blew out my stock original mufflers. Has worked like a charm all these years. But being one can now buy with small cap.. going to switch it out, and current is bulky. I have very little room behind firewall and modified stock air cleaner running k and N filter. The new one I can access with Bluetooth to make adjustments where needed..

The HEI distributors lack 1/8 th of an inch completely seating on my ‘63 c-30 283. Original distributed has a small notch that the HEI’s do not have. Reccomended suggestions ?
@ImpalaCadillacRestoModDIY2 жыл бұрын
They seat perfectly flat on mine. Make sure it’s seated all the way into the oil pump drive shaft.

@@ImpalaCadillacRestoModDIY tried numerous times. My original slips in and out every time no fail. The issue is the new distributor lacks this little notch just above distributed gear. I am trying to post a pic, but having no luck.

I wonder why you had to run the wire to the Key switch. My 69 Camaro has had an HEI in it for 30 plus years. The only wire going to it is the strait 12 volts going from the original power wire. The resister went in the trash.
@ImpalaCadillacRestoModDIY2 жыл бұрын
From everything I’ve read the original wire on mine has built in resistance. Therefore it causes the problem I had

Really nice car Ive owned my 65 4 34 yrs now you have like 1955 yr valve covers on it though 65 doesn't have Chevy script on it and 283 decals should be on top in the middle of valve cover just a friendly tip
@ImpalaCadillacRestoModDIY Жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with you on the Chevy script valve covers. I’ve had several with the script valve covers. Only the 283 had the script. 327 had a spot in the middle for the 327 label. I’ve never seen a 283 that didn’t have the script on them. 66 also had the script.
