Thank you so much for getting directly to the point and telling me the pertinent information and not telling me how the design process happened and how many failures that happened before there was a successful version.

for those who read this --- if you are converting from a non-HEI system with a standard coil, that coil will have a + & - (Positive and Negative (read GROUND) terminal, plus a coil wire to the OEM distributor. You can simply splice this "BATT" wire into the wire on the + side of the original coil - boom, that simple. The HEI dist conversion w/ the coil mounted in the dist cap should properly ground through the body of the distributor. (there should be a ground strap on the top of the coil under the upper plastic cap)

Quick to the point and easy to understand. Not meant to offend anybody but to those of you posting negative comments. You are lacking the very most basic understanding of working on your classic car. Here's a thought, instead of posting negative comments that make you sound silly. Get someone to help you understand the basics. You will gain valuable information and we won't have to read uncomfortably negative post.

What about those people trying to find out how to wire an held distributor?( like the video says it's about in its title) and they have to siftt through hours of miss labeled building like this in hopes of finding what they are trying to find and they are stuck watching a video of how to install some plug and play shit? I've built many cars truck tabs towards whatever.and I know how to wire an held points cdi or what have you.i was just sitting around watching KZbin videos to kill some time. The point I'm making is If I weregoing to make a video of how to wire an hei ignition it sure as he'll isn't going to show how to plug in 3 self explanatory factory color coordinated plugs into the corresponding sockets in which they are designed to plug into. Shit. A 5 year old little girl could figure that out

I've worked on cars and motorcycles my whole adult life, but this conversion isn't as simple as one wire and you're done. There has to be a relay between battery and this hei distributor. What actuates the relay to provide the 12v to distributor? Exactly what spark plug wires set will work for a Ford IL6? How exactly is the relay wired? Included instructions are vague and don't even mention a relay, but if you use the ignition switch wire, it's not a full 12v due to resistor. Cut out the resistor and you may fry the stock ignition switch. Since you know so much compared to us shade tree mechanics maybe you can enlighten us.

Neat video, but it didn't answer the question. When converting from a points distributor, WHERE do the Batt wire and the Tach (especially if you don't have a Tach!) wire go? The Distributor cap is clearly labeled. Where the wires connect up on the OTHER end is the issue.
@aldupuis67916 жыл бұрын
Great video, could have used a bit more information on setup. This is what I think. BATT goes to battery post(or starter positive post to make a cleaner harness) TACH goes to tachometer (If youre and don't want to fuss with a ignition switch) BATT GOES TO TOGGLE/TOGGLE GROUNDS/TOGGLE GOES TO STARTER(OR BATTERY DIRECT) TACH GOES TO TOGGLE/TOGGLE GOES TO POWER/ TOGGLE GOES TO TACHOMETER/ TACHOMETER GROUNDS. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't wired it yet!!!!

How do you know what number to start with when it comes to the spark plug wires? the caps aren't numbered. I have a 65 inline 6 mustang and don't know where to begin with the spark plug wires or what to set the rotor on, TDC?
@cleveland22869 ай бұрын
5 months ago means you probably already figured it out but I'll tell you anyway Rotate the engine to where cylinder #1 (if an inline 6, the cylinder at the front of the motor) is at TDC as indicated on the balancer. Take the distributor cap off, locate where the rotor is pointing, and mark that on the body of the distributor with something like a paint marker. Put the cap back on, and rotate until one of the terminals on the cap (where you plug the wires in) is right on top of that mark you made. Then in the correct order of rotation (which you can look up online) hook the wires up in order. In an HEI or non-HEI distributor, it shouldn't matter which terminal you start on - as long as the first one to fire is indeed lined up with the rotor.

I'm converting my stock distributor on my 58 Impala to an HEI. Where would I put the ignition lead wire-to the ignition switch or the fuse? The tach lead, where do I attach that wire? Since I don't have a tachometer on my car

Thank you. My mechanic put in one on my 61 apache with 350 and left off the red wire connector. only had a spade connector shoved in close to the connector. Worked for a while but then got loose. Watching your vid showed me the proper connector so I made one kinda like the factory one and am race ready for sure now. Always work on your own stuff is the lesson.
