Some people argue that since Funakoshi didn't teach the bunkai, the actual application of these kata are lost, and all current applications re re-inventions. And I think that is OK, as long as it provides two things to the students: (1) They focus on an application, so they perform with focus and intensity of a battle, so kata does not become a dance, and (2) the repeated practice of these kata provides the student with practical self-defense skills. I think Sensei Gimberline meets these two criteria wonderfully. Thanks for posting these videos.

Thank you for this. Our sensei encourages us to research on our own to get other ideas of application because none of us truly know all the answers, our sempai has told us that a lot of theory can come from kata

That's right. But you have to learn every movement of each kata. For that you have to practice correctly every kata 500 times, at least.

This is very good material. Very few karate schools teach kata bunkai. Do you have instructional dvds for sale?

Carlos Llanos thank you Carlos. I do not yet have instructional dvds for sale, but it might be something we will work on for the future. I am more likely thinking of a pay website with classes and instructions you can train along to. In the meantime you can email and ask questions if you like.
