I ran a Heidelberg windmill in 1975-77 when I was a senior in highschool and a year after. We didn't print with ours but used it for die cutting grocery store shelf labels on Fasson sticky back stock for stores all over the US. We ran AM Multi 2850's to print the sheets of labels before running thru the windmill. I got pretty good at it and during my time there was asked to train the new operators. I never used to for printing or numbering but I did use an old Chandler Price letter press to number 3 part carbon paper a few times. Sometimes the numbering machine would get stuck on a number so that was a pain. One thing I noticed on all the KZbin videos of the Heidelberg Windmills the handle to engage the impression is either a red or black knob where the one I ran had a heavy steel (of course) stirrup shaped handle to pull up to engage the impression our to drop to turn off impression. Fortunately I googled and found a photo of one that had the same type handle just to confirm I'm not misremembering. Even though it's been so many years since I touched one I can still run through the process to turn then on and run them from start to finish in my mind. As a teenager I took a lot of pride in running mine. We had some die cutting jobs that wereb more difficult than others and after I had moved to the small offset presses would have to come back to run those specific jobs as I had less trouble with them.

the ones with the knob are 10"x15" in print size. The black knobs are older models than the red ones. The other ones you are talking about are bigger: 13"x18".

@@scheppers I hadn't noticed the size difference. Thanks! Yeah the 2 I ran were 13 x 18. It's been over 40 years since I operated them and I can still here the clanking, hissing and whooshing, etc without trying too hard. 😁

running the press was simple in comparison to the math of where each numbering machine started ! Yikes ! Ask me how I know ?

@@edwardmanfredi121 I printed with 16 numbering boxes. It's easy to work out the start numbers for each box. The only problem that I had is when the numbering box(s) would get jammed.

I've spent ten years plus on letterpress equipment when I started printing. Love the several years on the windmill. Loved my V-50 too. Dig a bunch of numbering including a fifty on form for some insurance company and we always spend a couple of days getting the number machines ready for that job and we had to stop every 50sheets to certify the numbers. Miss it sometimes

Large scale numbering is a good challenge isnt it. Box maintainance definatly key to making the magic happen correctly

I was always told to keep the numbering boxes in blanket wash in a dish. Submerged then just wipe with lint free cloth and ready to go

@letterpress.printing2 жыл бұрын
So the first thing to check(and the easiest) is make sure when you lock up the numbering boxes in the form that you don't over tighten the qoins. If the numbering boxes are squeezed to tight then it can affect the way the numbers tick over. Next step is pull the box apart and check that the main shaft is still straight. A bent shaft can cause numbers to stick or jump. Also if any ink has got between the numbering rings it can cause the numbers to not turn over properly. I hope this helps.

What’s the paper doing in the machine is that so th N O doesn’t print ?
@letterpress.printing2 жыл бұрын
The NO has been ground down and then on the other side of the board there is small patches of aluminium that line up with where the NO's are that then actuate the plunger.

@@joemerendino3021 We don't usually number on NCR on the letterpress machines. Mostly on 80gsm(like in the video), 210gsm and 400gsm cast-coat board.

I'm shocked anyone is still numbering in black on a letterpress. It should all be done when it's digitally printed. A waste of time for the most part.
