Ken Wood, without a doubt, is among the best euphonium players on the planet. I've been playing euphonium for 55 years, and I couldn't play as well as this gentleman even if I practiced 23 hours per day for all those years. He's phenominal. And his composing skills are just as good. Everything he writes is outstanding. And finally, his skill is matched only by his kind and friendly demeanor. I recently rejoined the Harker Heights Community Band (TX) where I look forward to performing with him and the rest of the group for years to come!

Lots of love for the soloist but can we talk about the superb technique of the horse call in that trumpet.

fast passages, triple/double tonguing and stuff are one thing, but i cant describe the aural BLISS i get from listening to the air from 1:07 to 1:52... it is simple, yes, but therein lies the beauty. Words desert me, language is not good enough to describe the range of emotions and images in my head

Tech question. I am not a musician but I curiously would like to know why the third valve is seldom depressed? Feel free to give me a really complicated answer.

In the low to mid range it is used more often, but most solos are not written in that range. I'm not sure how to explain it fully but as you go up in range, notes that would be played with valves 2 and 3 or 1 and 3 can often be played with just the first second valves. The intervals in between notes become shorter as well. Also, on a compensating euphonium like this, players usually use the fourth valve which does the same as pressing the first and third valve down. Since one valve is easier than 2, the fourth valve is more commonly used.

What mouthpiece is he using
@AKCEuph7 жыл бұрын
Looks like it could be a Denis Wick either the AL or the original SM model. Couldn't tell you what size but most people play either a 4 or a 3.

AKCEuph i believe is the original dennis wick euph mouthpiece, just the AL edition

Mr. Wood is so underrated for Euphs. He arguably better than David child , and maybe even Mr. Mead

+josh janes i think that there are better euphonist than david and steven, like Glen Van Loy, Demondrae Thurman or Algirdas Matonis, and y like the sound of Mr.Wood
