Yes, almost all roman troops used spears originally, following the greek method of warfare. I believe it was experience fighting local Italian hill people in rough retain that convinced Rome to switch to more swords. Better and better designs of pilum also allowed Romans to ignore having long melee spears, because of how effective they were when thrown against shields, and the fact they could be used as basically a short spear if forced to.

to add to ur discussion around the 28min mark Heir, battle of Marathon 490BC Athenian hoplites did charge the hell out of Persian light infantry and despite the collapsed phalanx the charge was last minute enough that the shape was kept reasonably intact.

Just a tip heir: In carthage do the commercial stimulation edict, because Carthage itself has a commercial bonus as well if you make a bunch of commercial buildings in Carthage and the African province in general it will really help out youe income. In my Carthage campaign I have an income of 5000 in Carthage and 1000 in the smaller cities in Africa.

Also get as many resource cities, because then you can ask like 9000 or so to get trade with other nations. Macedon didnt want trade now, but if you have a lot of resources they will be begging for trade.

Roman sword garrison is quite capable, I am doing a Rome DEI campaign and defended against lots of Enemies with 2-3 swords and a few of those spears from garrison. Also, against hill camping bring 1 ballista and the AI will never camp again, even if you attack their fort they will come out, so you don't need to push uphill, I always put 1 or 2 siege engines in my advancing armies. Anyway, great episode, loved all the killing ;)

Early Hastati did use a spear called a hastae (6 ft) under the Camillan System, which was used until the time of the Punic Wars

Greeks did charge all the time. In the battle of Marathon, the Greeks charged the last 100 meters or so against the Persians, who also charged.

Not so, because the Greeks have an event at the Olympics called the hoplite run. They would run in full kit for more than 200 meters, just like at Marathon. So the question is " do the hoplites from Carthage train in the same manner?" Great video series.Love Total War.

I really enjoy the generals' speeches in this one. Feels nice and dynamic the way they were done versus something like Shogun 2's cutscenes. I still wish Shogun 2 had epic city battles even something like this game though. Maybe in Shogun 3.

The way to get the most out of rear attacks is to pepper the enemy with skirmishers up close and preferably with Javelins, then after your Javelins use their ammo you charge with at least medium cavalry.

the reason the early units use spears is because historically the Romans used a tactic similar to the Greek phalanx since it was simple and effective and also rome was used to getting attack before they became a superpower

Heir just an answer to your question about the early hastati and Principes fighting in melee combat with spears they would not have used spears in close quarters only at a distance to break an enemies charge hope it helps marra (mate) cheers

+HeirofCarthage the early hastati fought with spears because they are based of etruscan infantry(italian spearmen?). then the romans realised "hey, swords kill spears" and switched their infantry to swords. I think thats what happened anyway. now, how do you do that were you go into cinematic mode but you don"t zoom to a unit?

greeks really had more chance not charging because the momentum of enemy troops onto the spear wielding units did more damage

I don't think there were a Early Hastati unit, especailly with long spear. Early princeps could have been equiped with long spear, like historic hoplites. AI is far too stupid, Drop-in-battles is essential.

On Rome 1 there could be no spaces in your name. You had to go all one word or underscore in between. That is where the name came from.

Carthage's ruins are in modern day Tunis, Tunisia. If you look on google maps of that city directly along the waterline, you can see the old Carthaginian Harbor and the ruins of the city

CA really needs to fix the AI ands its intelligence, because honestly its getting kinda boring watch Heir crush the AI almost every single video, they should make it where you and some friends can play an online campain, but u can only play aganist each other, EX. Heir plays as Carthage and his friend has to play as Rome or major rival faction.

Mark' Anthony Par-Wise You actually can play the campaign online with someone else and he can take control of the enemy army. It's called a head-to-head campaign. Lionjeart for example has head-to-head campaigns in his playlists if you want to watch something like that..

Why are you people still asking this question and why haven't you people learned after people have bin have given you the same answer on every video heir have uploaded for the last couple of years? KZbin videos need some time to render before it ends up in 1080p, it usually takes about an hour from its been uploaded until its at full quality, some times youtube is f... up and it takes some extra time.
