Keep an ear out when they say "friend" in the show. They often say "nakama" which while it usually translates roughly to friend, colleague, or comrade it tends to have a lot heavier of a meaning in One Piece than when they use tomodachi to say "friend".

And yes, even though as little he was treated harshly, it never justifies you hurting others who had nothing to do with anything in the first place.
