"Which one of you is Arlong?" The more I rewatch One Piece, the more I find myself appreciating Luffy. He doesn't know Nami or the village's story and doesn't care. He simply saw Nami hurting herself while screaming some dude's name. Didn't even ask any question and simply stormed off to beat up a guy who he doesn't even know what he looks like.

@Vermillionx

This is the moment most people come to appreciate One Piece and understand why it's the greatest of all time. Not to mention solidifying Luffy as a fantastic character. Luffy comes to the island because he already accepts Nami as their Navigator. He values his friends so highly and shows it by just being there. He stops Nami from stabbing herself. She frustratingly doesn't understand why Luffy is going to such lengths despite knowing nothing about her past and being told to leave. None of it would have changed Luffy's mind because all he sees is his friend in need of help and he's just waiting for her to finally ask him for it. It's so satisfying to see Luffy show how much he truly cares without using any words to show it. Luffy is a fictional character but everyone deserves to have somebody like him in their corner.

I agree with that aspect of Bellmere, and I hadn't thought of the poverty angle before, but now that you mentioned it I definitely remember how my mom would figure out meals for my siblings and I. My mom would make a lot of food from scratch because it was more affordable and more nutritious than buying a lot of the ready-made stuff. I also remember improvising snacks because we didn't have typical "junk food" in the house very often, unless there was a birthday party or something. My parents would always make sure there was food to eat, even if it had to be made from scratch

@@GRANIME Pretty good list with great characters.
@spaceisawesome1
@spaceisawesome1 10 ай бұрын
@@GRANIME You misunderstand the complexity of Luffy. He is written to be a somewhat of a flat and complete character at the beginning of the show. He is written as someone that has a magnetic, child-like innocence from which position he points out the various structural flaws in the world. This is incredibly hard to get right .... "being an adult and writing it from the believable point of view of a child". This is in a sense what the impressionist and abstract art movements were about .... "Yes" technically perfect portrait painting is more complex, but it is a solved formula by now (much like how all of the characters in the anime you listed have similar problems of "being in internal anguish due to my past" ---> we know this formula by now), but painters like Monet and Picasso (in particular) wanted to challenge themselves even further and paint what the emotional moment felt like (Monet), and what a child would paint as (Picasso). In this sense it is infinitely more complex to get right. In the same way Luffy is written through eyes of a child, by an adult. It is hard to make it believable, because of course we don't reallly know how children would react to certain circumstances, but with Luffy, somehow the actions he chooses throughout each arc seem to "make sense in the bigger picture", often when we as adults would've made different, yet rational decisions. This is why although most people say Luffy is dumb, they can't deny that he has a strange magnetism to him (and in the show they repeatedly say this is his most "incredible power that makes him the most dangerous to the world government"). So people who can't see the complexity in the Luffy character are completely missing the point of his construction, and people who complain that he is "the only one that doesn't grow", also have no idea what they are talking about .... he isn't really supposed to have character growth (much) by design!
