I always found the talk at the end with the Asari Councilor to be extremely chilling; reality of the situation really starts to hit home (no pun intended).

I agree. I would say Thessia is one of the missions were you truly realise how desperately outmatched the galaxy is by the Reapers, and it will take not just one miracle, but several to save the galaxy. From the dying asari soldiers to Vendetta's chilling dismissal of any hope of survival for the current cycle, to the projection of multiple Sovereign class Reapers converging on Thessia.... this part of the game is without a doubt one of the bleakest moments of the trilogy. And ventually all those soldiers who gave their lives to get Shepard into the temple died for nothing.
