Bonus points: The painting is clearly on canvas, the Mona Lisa is famously painted on wood. In-universe, Miles is so dumb he didn't realize the French gave him a copy he could have detected with a Google search just to get him to leave them alone. So now he's going to be remembered as the guy who *nearly* destroyed the Mona Lisa.

In the world of Benoit Blanc the painting is real. The Mona Lisa is gone. If it turned out he burnt a fake he'd be lauded as an idiot then forgotten and klear would go on to endanger millions of lives. For the ending of the movie to work, for Miles to finally face justice, for the golden titties to finally run dry, the painting *has to be real*. The Mona Lisa has to burn. Perhaps it's a factual error on the part of the filmmakers, perhaps it's a visually interesting way for something to catch fire. It's also way bigger in the film than in real life, again to make its image more visually striking!

More bonus points: Miles Bron claims that the louvre was desperate for money because they had to close during the pandemic, however the louvre is owned by the French government AND receives 60% funding from the said government. So it is unlikely that the louvre will loan any paintings much less the Mona Lisa

No, it was definitely the actual Mona Lisa. Its just that the filmmakers obviously had to use a copy. I think they just assumed that either no one would notice that detail or they wouldn't know about the original being painted on wood. I personally didn't notice it until now, so good eye! But yeah, on order for the ending to work, she would have had to be real in the plotnof the movie itself. If she wasn't, I'm sure they would have revealed it or explained it somehow, cause then it would make no sense otherwise.

People: French probably tricked Miles with a fake Mona Lisa Me: No, it’s just that there was a scrapped post-credits scene where it was revealed that the Mona Lisa was fake, so it would explain the way it burnt, they probably didn’t have time to redo the Mona Lisa scene or just plump forgot about it (both seem very reasonable explanations), so in this canonical version, the burnt Mona Lisa is real
@Toonwalla2010

The great bit about this is that, real or not, the movie doesn't really change. Miles is still a massive idiot anyway for getting the painting. If it were a duplicate then Miles was an idiot for being duped after claiming to know so much about it, and if it were real then he was still just as big an idiot for keeping it in a place where it was in danger of being destroyed. Either way he loses big time because no matter who made it, it was destroyed because of him.

I love how this whole scene is a metaphor for how Miles treates the women in his life. He gloats that, if he went up against Helen in court, people would believe him over her. Most likely due to sexism. But how does he lose? Because he bought a famous painting of a woman and disabled the safety protocols so he could "look her in the eye." Which is the very thing that completely destroys his reputation.

I mean, the man murdered two people and was poised to kill a lot more if left unchecked. If any of the other people in the room had the spine to testify against Miles, Helen never would have had to go that far to make her point. Like, yeah, a version of this movie where the Mona Lisa survives and Miles still gets caught is plausible, but that's not what the movie is about. What the movie is asking is, how do you weigh stuff -- priceless stuff, but still stuff -- against human lives, and justice for them?

If she wants justice and can't get the others to testify, then she can kill the man for all I care. But again, I thought this was stupid.
