Such a wonderful story! Feeling pitty for someone with a disability is demeaning to that person because you are not holding them up to the same standards as everyone else. If we're all equal then we must expect everyone to be held up to the same standards of behavior. Perfect example of her parents spoiling her and pitting her and not demanding her to be the best she can be.

I know, right? I was once friends with a girl who was wheelchair-bound, but I later realized how much of a brat she was. She treated other kids at school poorly, so when they treated her the same way back, her mother was convinced her "poor daughter in a wheelchair" was being bullied, when in reality they were treating her the way she had treated them. It goes to show, similar to what you said, that the Golden Rule also applies to disabled persons.

It's demeaning to the disabled person - saying 'you can't achieve anything more than this' rather than saying 'you might not be able to do all the same things and it might take longer to learn/ have to do it a bit differently but you are part of society and are subject to its rules'

I love it that the Brother knows the issue is not that his sister was disabled which was only half the problem the issue was she was spoiled . I do not know if Keller was like this in real life but if she was and this is was Anne Sulivan had to put up with at first my hats off to her because it had to have NOT been easy becuase she had to undoo all the bad habits and dependacy that Keller hadcome accustomed to being allowed to do before she was able to even teach her.

I understand that her parents didn't know what to do, but feeling THAT sorry for Helen and letting her have her own way all the time is just unacceptable; even disabled persons have to disciplined like everyone else. Annie Sullivan is a legend. Back when I was in elementary school, I made friends friends with a girl who was wheelchair-bound, and we were friends for quite some time until I later realized how much of a brat she actually was. She treated other kids at school poorly, so when they treated her the same way back, her mother was convinced her "poor daughter in a wheelchair" was being bullied, when in reality they were treating her the way she had treated them; so because of that I stopped talking to her, and I haven't had any contact with her ever since. Miss Agent E Absolutely, A matter of fact I have a disability and dealt with bipolar depression, PTSD, Social Anxiety, ADD/ADHD with Borderline/Mild General Learning Disability. I take Ritalin and Zoloft generics. The only difference is that I'm not deaf and blind, for fortunately I can learn more than what school authorities said what I couldn't learn.

Ashley Nave. Good for you Ashley to open up like you did here. I have worked in the mental health field. I have met people and clients going through what you are going through. What I have found is that people with Bipolar depression, PTSD, Social Anxiety, ADD/ADHD, and Borderline, and so forth, are some of the nicest people I've ever met. This is because of the humility that came with having to accept and deal with the problem. People who strut about out there, adoring a wealthy, self serving president like Trump, just don't get it. And If I start to feel sorry for myself, I think about Helen Keller, because I didn't have to overcome the obstacles she did.:)

This is my favorite scene & version of "The Story of Helen Keller". Wonderful choice of scenes. To think this might be how FATHER YAHWEH sees & hears us, as spoiled deaf & blind children being lead astray by the enemy all the while we're having horrible temper tantrums not realizing FATHER wants the very best for us all. Helen's lifelong story is amazing. And Ann Sullivan stayed with her all along. Darn you Helen for stabbing Ann! This is what makes the story so compelling. The difficulty Ann had with Helen. Ann could have walked off the job. But Ann stayed there with Helen. And it all leads up to the magnificent water pump scene at the end. :)

Yes it is wonderful that Anne stayed with Helen who was very wild and stubborn. Actually Helen could learn at the beginning but her mother always interfered that's why Helen got always what she wanted and Helen PERFECTLY KNEW THAT HER MOTHER WOULD ALWAYS TAKE HER DEFENSE which explains the lack of Ann's authority. Plus Helen was badly spoilt and nobody ever had refused her to take her food from her parent's plates before Ann arrived and she made a tantrum when Ann said her NO . I love the words at the family meal though and Ann is right to stand up to Arthur keller telling him "Pity ?For this tyrant?Well said Ann!!

You have to remember, Annie was just 20 (she turned 21 shortly after the miracle) and she had been blind in childhood, so she knew what worked best for her. She had to be tough with Helen to undo 7 years of coddling and getting her way.

Nobody blamed Hellen. Her parents were art fault. Hellen didn't act out because of her disabilities. She would have acted the same whether she could see and hear or not, because her behaviour was a result of no boundaries set by her parents.

This isn’t a documentary or a peer reviewed study...so I wouldn’t take everything depicted at face value. That being said , let’s grant the film is 100 per cent accurate : the teacher had to invent a method on the fly for this case...which is an extreme case because nothing existed at that time to deal with Helen. This is a tale of hardship that we have learned from and if the teacher had had the choice presented to her of dealing with the child at an earlier more docile age, with less negative reinforced behaviour in Helen, of course she would have chosen the latter. Seeing this film and how taxing this way of teaching was mentally and physically, however good the outcome was, for both of them and come out thinking it’s a good form of pedagogy for all children is ...problematic. Unless you are talking about certain very specific extreme cases...and I’m not even sure the exact same method would be necessary given the wealth of literature, data and resources available to us today.

@@carbonghadius1408 I've studied the Helen Keller case. This scene is very accurate. You're thinking too much and applying modern sensibilities. The truth is, Annie took what was considered normal child-rearing at the time and applied it to Helen. She treated Helen as if she could hear and speak.

@@carbonghadius1408 But even though Anne is using methods that can be considered extreme, she is not using force simply because she can, she is reacting to Helen's aggressiveness. When Helen slaps her, she slaps her back. Helen is receiving what she is giving. You could say that it is an extreme way of learning empathy. This makes sense considering that at that time Anne had no other way to communicate with Helen, they couldn't have a conversation and reason why something is wrong or right, so Helen had to learn these things in practice. But Anne would not have had to use these methods if she had come to Helen at a younger age. The real problem was that Helen was spoiled and confused by her parents' reactions to her own behavior. If she was doing something wrong or was annoying, they would give her something she liked to calm her down or entertain her. But what Helen was learning was that when she misbehaved, she was rewarded for it. So how was she to know that what she had done was wrong? She would do it again so she could get what she wanted. Action to a reaction. This is clearly depicted at the beginning of this clip, when Helen's mother gives her a treat after she stabbed Anne, just to calm her down. I think it was smart to show this scene just before the famous scene in the dining room. They did not leave Anne with many other options I think. Once Helen understands that things have names, and learns to communicate, there is really no need to use force that way. At the end of the day, Anne didn't want Helen to simply obey, she wanted to give her the tools to become her own person with the ability to make her own decisions.

I think the violence towards Helen in this scene, and in the scene that immediately follows it, is the reason why this film is never shown on TV anymore (at least not in the UK). TV station bosses shy away from showing it, regarding it as "not politically correct" or "offensive". Her parents spoiled because of her condition and I'm sorry they were wrong for that. Like they could have taught her about table manners when she was younger. I know parents of disabled children who act like Helen's family. Demanding that she behave at the table is decried as "ableist". Anne Sullivan improved Helen's life by holding her to the same standard (to the extent reasonable) as she would hold a non-disabled child. It is sad when parents just throw their hands up and let their disabled child do whatever they want regardless of whether it is socially acceptable-especially when they know society is not going to be so open-minded.
