Why aren't there voices like hers today? Magnificent, and what a musician!

She was the first opera singer I shook hands with - I was a teenager and it was backstage after her nightclub act.

THank you Thank you. At alst I have found a female singer singing this beaustiful Tchaikovsky song in English. It is so necessary to hear and understand the words to appreciate it fully. Whenever I listen to it I think of Tchaikovsky and how he - as far as we know - sufferred in his homosexuality. Nelson Eddy sings it beautifully - but as a woman I feel that the voice of a woman brings out the absolute beauty of the words and music. Thank you again.

No problem at all! Dark and rich voices seem to fit this song best.

Yes, sad and brooding. What state of mind and spirit was poor Tchaikovsky in when he composed this music? He must have been a tortured soul at his death: RIP maestro.

Ma vie en rose @}~ Helen Traubel Lovely, delicate, graces the air as scent to Goethe hearts who know. ~ JW vonGoethe

Mei's Russian translation: Net, tol'ko tot, kto znal svidan'ja, zhazhdu, pojmjot, kak ja stradal i kak ja strazhdu. Gljazhu ja vdal'... net sil, tusknejet oko... Akh, kto menja ljubil i znal - daleko! Akh, tol'ko tot, kto znal svidan'ja zhazhdu, pojmjot, kak ja stradal i kak ja strazhdu. Vsja grud' gorit... Kto znal svidan'ja zhazhdu, pojmjot, kak ja stradal i kak ja strazhdu. An English translation: None but the lonely heart Can know my sadness Alone and parted Far from joy and gladness Heaven's boundless arch I see Spread out above me O(h) what a distance drear to one Who loves me None but the lonely heart Can know my sadness Alone and parted far From joy and gladness Alone and parted far From joy and gladness My senses fail A burning fire Devours me None but the lonely heart Can know my sadness
