There was a period where Richardson was nominated for lots of awards, and was in a slew of films that brought her to attention. Then she seemed to fade away to some extent - whereas H.B.C. has had a very consistently prominent career since "Howard's End" I think. HBC took a bit of a break after "Room with a View" and she said she found she'd been somewhat forgotten and had lost momentum, so she had to take roles in smaller film and TV projects like "Hazard of Hearts" for TV, and work her way back up. I thought it was very strange casting that Richardson was cast as the MOTHER of Rupert Graves in "Damage". They didn't even put lots of age makeup on her! But she got an Oscar nom and the film was a prestige A list film (dir. Louis Malle, stars Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche).
@danektf11 ай бұрын
Richardson’s career best was before she gained attention in the 90s. Dance with a Stranger (1985). She even was awards ready with her small role in Empire of the Sun. I would love to see a great comeback role for her.
@SY-ok2dq11 ай бұрын
@@danektf Yes DW a S was the film that put her on the map in the UK and to some extent, abroad. But it didn't gain much attention stateside. Richardson's role in Empire was a supporting one, part of an international cast, in a film with a long runtime where Christian Bale was the centre and commanded all the attention. And Empire wasn't the audience (or critical) success that would have been expected from 80s Spielberg, although it was still relatively successful I believe. I remember seeing Richardson in this TV adaptation of a novel, called "Mr. Wakeley's Crusade", with Peter Capaldi ('89 or 90?). She should do more of that type of comedy, she does it well. "Enchanted April" did very well internationally, and was popular with a certain audience in the US. And then "The Crying Game" and "Damage." I think US audiences might've had her somewhat confused with Natasha Richardson (or even Joely) and mistook her for part of the Redgrave/Richardson family.
@luketheobald31409 ай бұрын
In the UK she is still very well known for her iconic Queenie in the sitcom Blackadder. But Miranda Richardson's performance in David Cronenberg's Spider is one of the great film performances of the 2000s. When you take into account her performance as Ruth Ellis in Dance with a Stranger, the woman has some serious acting chops. But I think she's very much underappreciated, largely because she's a bit of a chameleon. I think Miranda's problem is that she made a few questionable decisions in her career that dented her 'star' profile (turning down Fatal Attraction, picking lots of small TV roles over bigger commercial films, turning down Desperate Housewives, etc). It doesn't help that many of her projects with prestige filmmakers have been great but underappreciated (Spielberg's Empire of the Sun, Altman's Kansas City, Burton's Sleepy Hollow, Cronenberg's Spider, etc), and that high profile TV roles have been nipped in the bud by cancellation (AMC's Rubicon & the recent Game of Thrones spin-off come to mind). I've always thought that once Miranda inevitably becomes a Dame she'll come back into the frame once again. @@SY-ok2dq

I will echo a previous post and highly recommend "55 Steps"; it's with Helena & Hilary Swank. I enjoyed the film, but it was certainly met with mixed reviews at the time of it's release back in 2018. I’m furious that she never won an Emmy or even a Golden Globe despite multiple nominations! I think she’s slowed down on work due to raising her family, and she and Tim Burton have long separated. Her miniseries Nolly is going to air on PBS in the US around March 2024. The show was written by Russell T Davies. Speaking of RTD, maybe you’ll do a video soon about his works, from Doctor Who to It’s a Sin? Most of his movies simply look good, they are not good, and I find at least hard to watch from beginning to end. Same with Harry Potter nonsense, though I know that every great British actor alive at the time seemed to be in those movies in one role or another. I am the same age as HBC and first saw her in A Room With a View and then Howards End, both absolutely amazing. You are correct in that the best she has done lately are her two seasons on The Crown. The problem with Helena Bonham Carter is that her output is really spotty. She'll do incredible work in Merchant Ivory films and then make Disney Tim Burton garbage, where she plays the same character each time. I adore her in A Room with a View, Howard's End, Wings of the Dove, and Fight Club. She can do exquisite work, but chooses not to with trash like Alice in Wonderland. I don't know that The Academy necessarily respects that. At least when Meryl Streep does a mediocre or bad performance it's usually because she's trying something new and different. (Think Mary Poppins, Into the Woods, etc.) Helena Bonham Carter repeatedly rehashes the same darker Tim Burton-y characters over and over, and it's incredibly boring. The Academy clearly doesn't like that she could have been a Bette Davis for our time, but chose to make emo mall goth movies instead. (Which isn't to say I don't like a darker performance, but once you've done a character like Marla, top it, or move on to something different. Most of the Tim Burton/Disney/Harry Potter characters frankly feel like watered down, less complex Marla, and it's sad because she's shown she can do better.)

For every Wings of the Dove or Room With A View, she’s doing Bellatrix or basically the same thing in every damn Tim Burton movie. Even her role in The Crown played up her strange outsider persona. It gets old very fast. I think if she did a straight comedy that sent up her wierdo roles and moved on to different roles it would help her.

David Fincher films rarely get the respect they deserve when they are released, so yes her brilliant turn in Fight Club would go unrecognized. But, as you said, when you think of Sweeney Todd, in all its incarnations, what actor/role immediately comes to mind? Why its Angela Lansbury as Mrs Lovett. Every incarnation and revival of Sweeney is almost always considered a two-hander and you don't nominate one without the other, the roles are so intertwined. So yes, for Johnny to get nommed but her omission was very sad and telling. I think the Academy looks at her much as they do Judy Davis, maybe she;s "difficult" or just such a natural talent, or just doesn't give a crap like they all so desperately do. If Helena had been delivering these roles in the 1960's and early 70's, she would likely have won an Oscar by now.

This video sadly reminds me both that Helen hunt won that Oscar AND that the kings speech won best picture and best director. That bear director seems even more embarrassing after Cats (which I adore because how awful it is).

In her speech when winning as a mother she told her children on national TV ---- ""it is not about the winning"". But if her children have a father he will tell them it IS about the winning. And that is why children need both a mother and father present in their life.
