I recolored a set of vector patterns but when I save it reverts to original colors? what am I doing wrong?

That should not happen Robin. If you have pattern swatches in the Swatches panel then, when you fill a shape with one of them and use the Recolor Artwork tool you should end up with two patterns - one original and one recolored version.
