This was super helpful! I use Inkscape, so I had to do a few things differently, but I was able to recreate the official tartan pattern of the RCAF. It's not a simple one, either!

I now know how to create a plaid with a twill weave, gingham & I know how to create houndstooth. I am DYING to try and create a tweed in Illustrator. Is that possible to do? Because I am struggling!!

It is easy to do in Photoshop and then bring into Illustrator.. But Challenge accepted!
