It's perplexing and counterproductive that communities continue to rebuild in the same vulnerable ways, disregarding the clear lessons from past hurricanes. By failing to implement effective mitigation strategies-such as burying power lines, enhancing drainage systems, and constructing aerodynamic buildings-they are not only inviting future devastation but also demonstrating a lack of foresight. When the inevitable damage recurs, it’s not just disappointing; it’s a failure to learn from history. We must prioritize resilience in our rebuilding efforts rather than repeating the same mistakes and expecting different outcomes

It's all about Location and if a building is built soundly. As long as you live away from the shore, keep your trees trimmed and away from your house and put stray things inside, 99% of the time you'll have minimal to no damage during even the big storms. The main problem is these houses not built for flooding or storm surge... and their age. They really need to require new houses within areas vulnerable to the two to built to withstand them. (and yes there is a way to build to withstand those two problems it just tends to be on the expensive side.) Maybe the government should fund a study on how to do it with cheaper materials. In the long run it would probably save billions of dollars and hundreds of lives.

With climate change turbocharging hurricanes and causing sea level rise, what do you suggest? Live in a concrete bunker? How about a concrete bunker on stilts? Maybe just admit reality and switch to a boat. But then what do you do about drinking water which now is salt water. Desal is a pricey way to get fresh water. I know, there are states next to huge Great Lakes full of fresh water far from oceans and in cold climes that will be nicer with global warming. Sell and move there. I am a little confused. We get wind storms with similar winds up here in the PNW but never deal with storm surges. Is it because of how flat and close to/below sea level Florida is? Or is there something different I’m missing.
@RannPattersonАй бұрын
Exactly that.
@JimmyD806Ай бұрын
Different type of storm. Storms hitting the PNW sometimes have rotation, but they aren't hurricanes. In a hurricane there's extreme low (air) pressure in the middle of the storm. This actually creates a mound of water that's several feet higher than normal sea level. As the storm moves ashore, this mound of higher water coupled with winds creates what's called storm surge. Basically a wall of water that just washes over everything. The fact that the land is only a few feet above sea level makes it worse.
@devoncantrell3311Ай бұрын
@@JimmyD806 that is super interesting!! I had no idea it worked that way, but it makes a lot of sense. From what it sounds like a hurricane in a sense “vacuums” the air from the center. Almost like if you held a vacuum cleaner a few inches over a plate of water and then dragged it to the edge. I’m sure it would pull some water along with it. Thank you for giving me such an informative answer.
