Beautiful description of the Heliconia. I have one in full sun, It never seems to look full. And rarely do I get flowers. I live in Florida USA. What fertilizer should I be using?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Hi, what i would recommend is a balance fertiliser of NPK and also use organic mulch around the plant. I can not suggest a product as in Kenya we don't have the same brands as in the US. A visit to a garden center and inquire what fertizers they recommend would also be a good idea.

Hi, darling! 🌺Your video has been so helpful in caring for my heliconia. I have a question: once the stem has flowered, should I dig up the plant, that is, take it completely out of the pot, to cut the stem, or can I do it with scissors✂️ or a knife at the lowest part?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 3 ай бұрын
Hi dear, when the flower is spent, you will need to cut the stem close to the base. I find that sometime the stem are tough. Try using the secectars however if that does not work use a knife. Be careful not to damage the rest of the foliage.

how can I get one
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Donald, in Nairobi they sell them in many of the nurseries. However, I would assume in Europe or North America they would be sold in nurseries that specialise on Tropical plants. Its always best to go with the photo of the plant as there are many Heliconia varieties and the foliage all look the same.

Can I keep it potted? Will it flower well potted? Thanks
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 8 ай бұрын
Hi you can pot this plant. Make sure the soil is well draining. As it is a tropical plant add organic matter in the soil and ensure that the soil is moist and not water logged. It will take about two year to mature and to get blooms( But again this all depends on which part of the world you live in).

Hi Brenda, helconias are best left outside in zone 10b - 11. they are not cold hardy in other regions and by leaving them outside you may lose your plant. If you are not in that zone its best to bring them in,

I need some help please.. this might be long🫣 I had a palm tree type of plant in a huge pot that started getting sick, so I wanted to repot it. I believed it had 5 little babies starting to grow around it (I never planted anything it just grew on its own) come to find out it looks like its a heliconia. I planted them in fresh soil and now there are 12 instead of 5! There is no flower yet so I dont know which type it is. The leaves are huge and buttery and beautiful. They dont have those long stems like yours do from the base towards the leaf. They are huge and wide. How in the world do they keep on multiplying like this? I dont know if its best I split them up? It is a 20” pot with 12 plants! How can I identify these?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Hi Priscilla, Google is a good tool, if you take a picture it will identify the plant. You could also send me a photo of the full plant through my instagram and I will try to identify the plant. We can then see what to do.

Hey im from Cape Town South Africa. We don't get frost or cold temperatures here but im looking to purchase heliconias. Im scared it might die. Lots of tropical plants grow outside here easily. Just cautious before i buy to grow outside
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Hi Jermaine, Heliconias are tropical plants and from what I remember of Cape town you do have warm summers and as you mentioned no frost. So I dont think you would have a problem. However, if you are unsure, grow it in a large pot. Once your have nurtured it and feel confident that it will survive you can then plant it in the garden.

Hey great video! How do you keep the foliage looking nice and lush? People don’t normally struggle with banana trees but their heliconia often look quite rough and brown. I’ve seen them in Singapore and Malaysia but those always look lush! I assume it’s humidity?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Hi Shahzeb during the hot weather these Helconia are thirsty drinker. So I do give then water. Also in places like Singapore there is humidity which they like. One must also cut off the dead leaves as that spoils the beauty.

@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 7 ай бұрын
Hi Cathy, no worries. Heliconias have rhizomes which are underground stems that travel horizontally.As they are stems they have nodes and from these nodes you get shoots. A bit like the bamboo plant. So what you need to do is dig up the rhizomes and follow their trail. Ensure that you remove all of it otherwise they will pop up again.
