Whist erecting a seven story high structure to be used as a Christmas tree, the helicopters rotor struck a cable causing the aircraft to crash to the ground. The Pilot was helped from the crumpled wreckage with minor injuries. Both of my Panasonic P2HD camera's were recording at the same time, even though I go to re-position myself because I didn't like the look of the cable near the rotor, my camera I am carrying is still recording. My other static wide view camera caught me walking across the frame, you can see the guy tug on the cable just as I go past him. After the impact, and seeing that the wreck had not burst in to flames, I'm the guy in the yellow hi-vis, white hat and blue jeans that hops in to the cab to help get the unconscious pilot out along with the guy who originally pulled on the cable, by the grace of God, no one was badly injured.

Aircraft are scary beasts, especially prop aircraft. Very lucky the pilot seemed okay and no stray of the rotor split someone on the ground in two. There should have been some major risk assessment before this job, and someone with a comm channel to the pilot dedicated to monitoring the cable.

You can barely see the guy but he reaches up and grabs the cable exactly when the crash starts. Like maybe he caused, or helped make it crash.

From the final report: "The safety investigation revealed that the SK75 Spectra lifting line did not release normally from the helicopter’s hook when commanded, after the tower lift. This was primarily due to the attachment of the lifting line fixed loop directly to the hook, instead of using a shackle and chain arrangement between the lifting line and the hook."

Wish something like this could be part of every description of videos like this. So many people seem to watch these kinds of clips just so they can feel superior to whomever they can pick out and blame for the whole incident. Always a good day when everyone gets out alive, and it seems more people need to learn to be grateful for it. That, or people like to pretend they're an accident investigator and say "what really happened" after watching one angle for 30 seconds. I'm with the NTSB on this one.

I was wondering why it snagged so quick when it didn't seem close enough to the rotar, didn't even see that guy. To be honest wasn't sure what their end goal was as at some point that would have snagged as the chopped got closer to the ground.

The shocking thing is just how quickly this goes from "perfectly fine" to "oh god, run for your lives". I'm glad no one got hurt. There was an airshow around here a few years ago and a helicopter had its landing skid snag on the ground during takeoff, so it tipped to the side, the rotor hit the ground and burst into fragments that went into all directions. A father in the crowd saw the debris coming towards his family, so he stepped in front of his son and was hit in the chest. Dude saved his son's life at the cost of his own. A very tragic story.

My guess is that the pilot was going to hover about where he was and drop the cable. They were probably briefed to drop the cable as low as possible for the safety of the workers underneath and so as not to smash the cable mechanism. Why anyone thought jumping up and grabbing the cable was a good idea I have no clue.

The helicopter hit one of the tower main Guy wires, as for workers underneath usually Any of these tower jobs I have seen the chopper does not land or pick up tower sections from the tower install site, the tower sections are lifted at different site and flown to the tower site making this accident avoidable. Not sure where you are used to working but this is a Construction site so it is Safety Protocols First… Every person Must wear a hard hat, High Visibility clothing , steel toe boots, eye protection and most likely hearing protection. Very likely the main reason the pilot survived is because he was low to the ground when striking the Guy wire. Very lucky very expensive day.

The crew or copilot on the ground was trying to detach the steel cable that got stuck on the lifting, he jump-grab the cable causing it to hit the rotor, instead if using a long stick to detach it directly from the lifting.

you can see the guy in the black shirt (the one that pulled the cable) also jump into the cabin, he reaches for the central pedestal and i think engaged the emergency fuel cutoff, hence why the engine seized after you and him jump in to get Greg (the pilot) out of the wreckage

I think the cable was used to lift the structure. It should have been released from the structure or the helicopter before trying to land.

And for those who think this was just people being careless, the comment below by @maximusboscus shares the official report that the helicopter’s cable had failed to release. The guy standing underneath the helicopter was putting himself in harm’s way to make his best attempt at swinging the cable off the hook. The result was bad, but there were a lot of other potential outcomes that did not include everybody’s survival.

According to the rigger, who pulled on the cable, he was asked to leap up and try and grab it, but all it did was pull the cable tight and obviously into the path of the main rotor. The rigging crew and pilot had a briefing and talked about scenarios if the cable didn't release, but leaping up to grab it was a spur of the moment decision

this is not the cable guys fault. this was everyones fault who thought it was a good idea to land a helicopter with an attached cable but the cable was attached to the top of the beam. theres no way to avoid this it was outright stupid!

This is another good illustration of just how much net energy (about 30%) is used to oppose the turning force reaction to the spinning rotor blades, and why coaxial helicopters like the Russian Ka-50 are so powerful. The entire helicopter folds in two when that tail force is taken away. Happens with all of them -- even the big ones.

If you replay the video...you will notice the guy the other side pulled the cable resulting in decrease of the distance between the cable and the main rotor. I wont blame that guy also because what i believe is... its really hard to gauge the diameter when you don't actually see the rotor because of high rpm and at the same time you are focusing on the work...i guess most of us might have gone through similar situation in our life( not helicopter..in general)........I would say cables & helicopters are never friends...it needs proper planning and precision.....There is a lack of proper planning and SOP ...what i see....

Well, yes, you're right. If they had thought ahead about what might follow from this, then either the cable would have been fixed at another point, or it would have had to be released from the top of the tower first. Then you should have tried to pull the cable from the hook of the helicopter. But later, after the accident, everyone is smarter. Not before.

I'm sure he thought it would actually pull back instead of tightening, but even so this was really dodgy to attempt. Even in the description this cameraman says he noticed the cable was too close to the blades, so good on him for noticing. I don't know how the others didn't. Glad everyone is okay though

You are right. This was clearly an accident but I would NOT trust helicopters a bit. They fall from the sky like a stone if something goes wrong. My friend is an emergency doctor and has to work sometimes with the helicopter crew. ALL of the helicopter doctors had already crashed with a helicopter and obviously and luckily survived but these things are ticking time bombs. These doctors are tough cookies.

Interesting the blades (and sleeves) remained somewhat attached to the Starflex. Looks like spherical thrust bearings or their bolts took the hit. Incredible how strong all that stuff is! I wonder where the engine sheared from the xmsn. Freewheel?

The safety investigation revealed that the SK75 Spectra lifting line did not release normally from the helicopter’s hook when commanded, after the tower lift. This was primarily due to the attachment of the lifting line fixed loop directly to the hook, instead of using a shackle and chain arrangement between the lifting line and the hook.

I dont understand. I work alot with helicopters as i maintain and service the main power grid lines in my country. why dident the pilot disconect the line from the tower? if it was a manual release or it was fixed to the tower then why dident the pilot disconect the line from his helicopter?

Yes they have an electric release and a manual release for the hook. What would happen if they both failed? Pilot would do what he did, not seeing the guy wires.

@@TheTruthKiwi The release mechanism failed so the plan was to get as low as possible and then manually release. Presumably, the pilot didn't want to get any lower to avoid hitting the wires. But since the other guy still couldn't reach, he jumped to grab it which caused the accident.

Seeing that this was recorded on two P2HD Panasonic camera's I'm wondering if the original recorded video file is actually still in 1080i59.94. Would be interesting to see this exact video in 1080p59.94 after the use of a double frame deinterlace encode (BOB/Yadif x2). But that's just a suggestion of course.

Jamais compris pour quelle raison ce pilote s'est obstiné à descendre avec son élingue accrochée à sa nacelle et toujours pendante depuis le haut de cette tour...Si le gars qui essaye de la dégager provoque le contact avec le rotor, le même résultat se serait tout de même produit quelques secondes plus tard en continuant à descendre, d'autant qu'il y a un autre câble fixe. Sans doute manque de communication avec le pilote ou problème radio..!!!!!!!!! Bien dommage pour cette machine qui n'avait rien demandé..............😕😡 Never understood why the pilot insisted on descending with his sling attached to his basket and still dangling from the top of this tower... If the guy who tries to free it causes contact with the rotor, the same result would still have happened a few seconds later while continuing to descend, especially since there is another fixed cable. Probably lack of communication with the pilot or radio problem..!!!!!!!!! Too bad for this machine which didn't ask for anything.....😕😡

I remember this Video from the news back in 2011. Lucky the pilot survived. Lol they use a steeltower as a Christmas tree, look like a idea from me as a lattice climber. In the netherlands they have the gebrandytoren almost 400 meters tall with christmas lights.

I was an aircraft engineer In the Air Force worked on many types of aircraft and choppers later becoming a pilot. It looks like the lifting cable he was trailing caught his tail rotor? The guy on the ground looks like HE caused this? The pilot should have dropped the lifting cable as you can see it curling up towards the tail! Its easy to reattach on the ground and safer. When lifting big loads UNLESS it is a cable that will hang vertically AWAY from the aircraft we will drop a light and flimsy cable for just this reason. The pilot was also conscious enough to shut down the turbine as that could have caused a fire, your close up shot he reaches up to kill the engine and electrics. Thank heavens the chopper was low or that could have ended a whole different way. They are dangerous machines to work around and you need your head on a swivel when approaching one that's rotors turning. I hope everyone got better? Your slow mo shot clearly shows the guy holding the cable giving it a flick - thinking he was moving it AWAY from the rotors - WRONG. I hope the guy who caused this was sent home and told not to come back!

What are you talking about? It's the main rotor that hit the cable not the tail rotor.

1:44 guy grabbed the cable and caused the crash. Also in slo mo it looks like the pilot came very very very close to either smashing his head open on the door frame or getting hit by a blade. Glad hes still with us.

Sorry, but that was unprofessional behavior on both sides! The pilot should know how much distance there must be from objects/ropes and the people below can clearly see how far the double steel cables protrude from the scaffolding and the helicopter could never have flown so close to it. Everyone stands next to it and appears to have their hands in front of their eyes. It's unbelievable that no one can see the ropes

Gosh it took me like 10 replays to see the guy just below the helicopter that jumped and yanked down on the steel cable causing it to snap into the helicopter blades. Holy crap. Was he trying to get the cable to release? So many questions, but that is absolutely what caused the actual immediate crash.

The lifting line release was stuck. The line was too light for it to let go from the catch. The guy at :33 was trying to yank it free, but in the process pulled it into the rotor.

At first i thought it was the updraft that pulled the cable into the rotor, but it was actually the guy on the ground that jumped up to grab the cable, which pulled the slack out of it which is when it hit the rotor.
