When you are a chopper pilot and you talk to the technician and mention that the tow guy is here to lift the copper, its probably a very unique conversation.
@PepesTowingService3 ай бұрын
Fun fact: My uncle has 2 helicopters and his mechanic is the exact same one who was talking to this pilot on scene, and he told him "call Pepe's". Lo and behold we got the call anyway from CHP.

@@PepesTowingServicewho'd have thought that the lifting points built into the helicopter could be used for lifting... Smart design that. They did good landing too!
@ImpendingJoker3 ай бұрын
@@JamesTK Funner Fact: All helicopters can be lifted by their rotor heads. That is the load bearing point as it carries all the weight of the aircraft in flight. 2 3 or 4 straps, depending on the number of blades, and up she goes. I worked on helicopters both in and out of the Army for many years and it always makes me wince when I see people trying to handle an aircraft when they are not trained to do so. Luckily this guy had done it before but he still wasn't what I would call, knowledgeable about it.
@JamesTK3 ай бұрын
Yeah, when you're not lifting helicopters day in day out it helps to confirm with a tech first. They did good :)
@Ittybitty-o6y3 ай бұрын
Well, if y’all can’t believe the lifting by the rotor, believe this, the rotor holds all the weight of the helicopter in the air. If you wanna keep flying the bird another day, that’s where you lift, try it anywhere else and you’ll rip that lightweight metal apart like the flying pop cans that they are! Good work pepe!
@jerryplante57833 ай бұрын
Helicopter pilots practice emergency landings (auto rotation) all the time and you have to demonstrate you can do one in order to get your rotary aircraft certificate from the FAA. If there's no substantial damage (as defined by the NTSB), it's called an incident and doesn't need to be investigated like an accident. Good job Alex.

@@littlelight6211 That plane crash the other side of Hawthorne airport later that same night sure kicked off some medical bills for the pilot and passenger! They say any landing you can walk away from is a successful landing. I'm not sure whether the people actually walked away-- more like got taken away in ambulances-- but they survived. The fact it got crunched into the street, not the Marriott? I'm gonna call it a successful landing, just really messy. That one calls for the NTSB.

@PTRRanger9513 ай бұрын
Pilot would have avoided that area due to the damage the reflectors could cause to the aircraft and also the fact that getting hung up on one of the bases for it could have caused the skids to catch and flip the aircraft. It was moved there after the landing before the tow showed up.
@Matismo883 ай бұрын
I don't think that's what he did. You see those wheels under the skids? They attach so the helicopter can be moved around, can be done by one person. Those wouldn't be there if they didn't move it.

Really amazing that the chopper wasn't destroyed by secondary collison with traffic. I heard a bus hit one of the rotors but it must have been relatively minor or the kinetic energy in the rotor would have destroyed everything. Good luck all around.
@EXROBOWIDOW3 ай бұрын
I was looking at some of the reports again. Initially, it was thought one of the rotor blades hit a bus. But apparently not. I would assume a rotor blade would simply slice the bus. Now I'm wondering if the Robinson rotors automatically line up with the axis of the craft when they stop. I know they are designed with 2 blades so a fleet of these helicopters can be parked right next to each other, as a space saving measure.
@adamstone60713 ай бұрын
It’s not automatic, the pilot used the rotor brake to time it - or moved it manually using the tail rotor
