This is a rare sight at the Tu-95 at work from the inside!

Well, not really. I live in Moscow under their traditional rout on Grate Patriotic War Victory Day Parade (9th of May we celebrate it). So, once they had a repetition a couple days earlier in the morning, Bears came unexpected (for me). I was sleeping. I woke up in panic because of my building was literally shivering. In my first moments I opened my eyes I was terrified. I live in 9-store concrete building and it was like an earthquake! I almost shit my pants - that how it was scary. I moved to the window and realized, that it is just and 3 old trusty Bears making this grate "BUUUUUUUUZZZZ". I don't know how high they were flying, 500-800 meters, I think.

It might be fun to joke about how loud the Tu-95MS is, but it's an deadly aircraft. Its' stealthy payloads is the deadliest part. It's doesn't need to fly close to its' enemies or targets, because it can carry Kh-101 and Kh-102 stealthy nuclear tipped cruise missiles that can be launched from 5,000km away from its' targets and enemies. The Kh-102 has an 250 kiloton nuclear tipped warhead, and each Tu-95MS can carry up to 16 Kh-101/Kh-102 cruise missiles. That's a total of 4 megaton by Bear bomber. The Bear bomber has never been used as an conventional bomber anyways. 10 Bear bomber aircrafts can deliver 40 megaton of nuclear destructive power to any of its' targets and enemies. With a total of 60-65 bombers in the Russian military arsenal, that's enough to destroy any country that threatens Russia. 260 megatons of explosive power isn't something to joke about. No one is going to hear the Bear bomber from thousands of kilometers away when it drops its' payloads anyways

The Tu-95 keeps going because they can't afford anything better. The B-52 keeps going because they can't really MAKE anything better with the design brief of 'goes a long way, drops a lot of bombs, comes back', and because it's so damn old that every single issue is documented with a list of fixes. And because there are warehouses full of spares pulled off the planes the Soviets had them break up for arms limitation treaties, so they could stop paying for old nuclear missiles that may or may not have actually existed.

I remember heard the sound of this plane many times, when I was a little kid in south central Cuba's horse country; the sound remains audible for about 15 o 20 minutes, what intriguing me was: in any case I could see the plane! -Not even on clear days-. Only, many years after, in Luanda's airport, Angola, I had the chance to see this TU-95MS on the airfield, and also, flying at not too high altitude; immediately I recognized the sound! Mystery solved! You can watch the Cuban Film "Hombre de Maisinicu", in the lynching scene you can hear the distinct sound of a far away TU-95MS on the background! The film was shot on the Escambray mountains, located at south central Cuba.

I have heard stories from retired Bear crewman and a vast majority of them have permanent hearing damage from those engines. No amount of hearing protection works because the sound waves pass through the head, not just through the ear canal. The pilots sat well forward and were not too bad off, but the others in the center, like the bombardier, navigator and radioman were right between the wings and bore the brunt of it.

Is there a jet engine in each engine used to turn the props at that high speed of rpm's? I know it is called a turboprop engine, so I believe that rules out the use of pistons. The prop tips can exceed the speed of sound, and I am unsure if a piston engine can produce that kind of rotational speed. Just ask ing, seems to me that a jet engine can easily produce such a high speed propeller rotation.

Fk67Lg From what I understand, the power generated by the jet turns a gearbox, which then turns the blades in opposite directions. It has something to do with laminar flow and makes the engine more powerful than just a jet by itself. And that turbulence is what causes the hearing damage. But, what do I know, I am in the dark too.

WWII engines became so powerful that they started pushing the propeller tips to supersonic speeds. IT explains why later designs had many blades instead of the more efficient two or three: more blades means you can turn slower for the same thrust. These are turboprops, driven by a jet engine's turbine and geared to spin slower than the turbine. The turboprops are more efficient than a jet engine, by a lot. They can barely reach the speed of sound at high altitude (the plane's top speed is 925km/h) but can travel much further.

Yes, very economical. If you destroyed one of the screws, then torque other screw pulls the engine out of the mounts and destroy the aircraft. The incredible power and strength.

Contra-props do awful things to sound waves every time the blades pass each other. Add to that the tips going supersonic at full power (times four engines) and it's more than you can "Bear". Efficient airplane for fuel use, generating noise, and deafening pilots.

Around 84 a TU-95 Bear did a low level pass of our carrier, escourted by 2 F-14's, and it was about 1.5mi from the ship off port side. It was LOUD but was amazing to see this huge plane flying at such a low altitude.

+im lost Where did you get the idea that the Bear has better range than the B-52? I flew B-52s for 6 years, they were significantly faster than the Tu-95, have better range, could carry more load, could fly higher and climb faster. Even a B-52G model (non-bypass J-57s) could fly 8,000 miles without air refueling, the H could go perhaps another 2,000 miles with turbofans. Look, I admit that both planes would be hopeless today as a penetrating bomber in contested airspace, but the B-52 performance is better in every way than a Tu-95. Specific fuel consumption is probably better in the Tu-95 (don't know for sure) but I don't think that the overall cost of operation of either aircraft is dominated by fuel cost. Both are now so old that maintenance is the major operational cost.

Oh man, such a cool plane... And those contra-rotating props tho, and that noise... Sheesh that's a fine aircraft. Incredible to see that the Tu-95, along with the B-52, are still the bomber backbone of the world's 2 largest armies, despite being in service for almost 70 years. Very cool video! May I point out that the pitch of the props apeared to be very high, almost in flag even after the engine was restarted ? That seems weird considering the aircraft is flying at cruise altitude, and what looks like cruise speed too. If anyone knows why that pitch is so dramatic, feel free to explain : )

NO OTHER long range dual propeller turbo prop bomber like it in the world. Apparently the Tu-95 has proven itself to be a great aircraft, because the Russians are still flying it to this day after 50 years since it first made it's debut. It might be noisy, but it can fly at extreme high altitudes covering vast distances. It also can refuel in the air. This aircraft is still a highly kept secret of the Russian government - for none has ever been sold to other nations.

Julius Nyangoro Its purpose is different than ICBMs. They are constantly flying around the border, and given an order, they can launch missiles in a matter of seconds, to hit strategic targets. Basically they are first reaction weapon.

AiKi2 I don't see it as a "first reaction weapon", you must mean 1st strike; in which case a submarines is way more capable of being anywhere/hit anything with its arsenal. I see the bombers as a way to get some launch platform in the air, another edge to respond to a threat. This plane and our B52's can loiter anywhere for hours and be refueled in the air, but frankly, I see it as a dead doctrine. The Russians keep it as a sign of their military prowess, and a reminder to the West that they are still a force to be reckoned with. As a weapon, even as a launch platform, it is more than obsolete.

When I was in the US Navy the Soviets used Bears to track, shadow and hunt our Carrier battle groups. Our Tomcats routinely intercepted them escorting them away. In this role they carry sub-sonic and supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles (conventional & nuclear) and are a potent threat. Their on station loiter time is impressive as well as their cruising speed. They also were used to monitor US Submarine activity in the Sea of Japan and the NW Pacific theatre. They are not secret at all...they are the Soviet & Russian Navy’s most commonly encountered airframe literally for decades. We called them the Flying Eggbeaters. Amazing aircraft for sure!

I don't think it was a shut down. looks like the frames per second on the camera were in sink with the rotation of the props making it look like they are not spinning. Go Russia.

The blades get all distorted when they're spinning quickly. The motor definitely stops for around a minute.

No its definitely a shut down at 1:38. There should be more distortion and additional flicker rate at the body of the prop which goes away at 1:38 when the prop briefly drifts out of sync appearing to spin faster for a moment. You can also hear the engine shut down.

Shutter speed stops the blades visually, but the tell-tale curving of blades increases with prop rpm. When the prop is stopped, the blades appear straight again

People actually think all this noise is coming from the engines... sorry to break it to you. It's not. The tips of each fan blade is exceeding the speed of sound. It is one of the loudest planes ever made because of it. Engineers always want to avoid having fan blades exceed the speed of sound. It's highly inefficient and obviously... loud. They can actually fix this problem by redesigning the propeller blades to a more scimitar shaped blades. This bird needs to be updated!

@@Ama-hi5kn I never said to put turbofan engines though... where did you get that? I said to update the propeller blades to a modern, composite, scimitar shaped blades. Just look at the c130 Hercules and the Super Hercules. Look at the difference in design. They did more extensive modernization on the Super Hercules than just the propeller blades... but you get the idea.

I remember heard the sound of this plane many times, when I was a little kid in south central Cuba's horse country; the sound remains audible for about 15 o 20 minutes, what intriguing me was: in any case I could see the plane! -Not even on clear days-. Only, many years after, in Luanda's airport, Angola, I had the chance to see this TU-95MS on the airfield, and also, flying at not too high altitude; immediately I recognized the sound! Mystery solved! You can watch the Cuban Film "Hombre de Maisinicu", in some scenes you can hear the distinct sound of a far away TU-95MS on the background! The film was shot on the Escambray mountains, located at south central Cuba.

Notice how the rear prop spins a bit faster than the leading prop. This is because order to capture the rotational outflow from the leading prop the size and RPM of the trailing prop has to be slightly different than the leading prop. The rotational outflow from the prop is wasted energy in single props, with coaxial props some of that wasted energy is recaptured.

I was on a U.S. aircraft carrier when a Tupolev bomber, escorted by a couple of F-18s, flew past at only about 30 meters altitude. I watched this video just to again hear the sound of this aircraft in flight. Nothing else sounds quite like it. Very cool. We don't have to be friends for me to respect your achievements.
