Rather than a button compass and a signal mirror, I prefer a larger, plastic, folding, Silva Ranger compass that has a mirror inside for shooting azimuths. Anytime I'm afield, it's in my shirt pocket with the attached, thin red cord, holding the little piece of thin metal for declination adjustment, reeved through the button hole near the shirt collar. ... You've created a well-thought out, compact kit. Lots of great idess here. Thanks.

The Silvia you have mentioned is great . I had although my complaints with the compass . I have in my Bugout always a suunto MC2 Global and know how to use it in conjunction with a map. With a button Compass like the one that was mentioned you can only north a Map other important functions are missing and even that would be hard ( compass quality and precision ) .

It helps to slide your candles into a straw so if it melts in your bag it is more contained and keeps it from bending or breaking, as well as gives you a little extension on it if you pull it out partway, and as it gets smaller.

After putting the candle in the straw, grasp about ¼" of the plastic straw with flat nose pliers and melt the sides together with a butane lighter. Do the same thing on the other end. Totally water and mess proof. To use just cut off one end with a knife, The straw is flammable too. ... I also use that technique with a cotton ball permeated with vaseline as a fire starter. ... The local Party Store sells bundles of brightly colored drinking straws.

You really do have some very well thought out kits with quality items. If I was you, I would swap out that wax candle for a liquid candle. The liquid candles last TWICE as long for the same size and are MUCH cheaper. In fact, if you start hitting up Walmart's garden section, they're starting to liquidate their summer items which includes the liquid candles. I buy them out every year for like 25 cents each. A 12 hour liquid candle is just a tad larger than a tea candle, and a liquid tea candle gives me over 8 hours of burn time, and I've burned through A LOT of them. The other REALLY nice thing about Walmart candles, is that they burn and keep bugs away, which is a blessing at night when you're trying to rest up some as well as take the chill off of you. Plus, the caps are 100% leak proof, and actually impossible to get off without some sort of screwdriver type tool, like on your SAK, but I still vacuum seal them with a couple books of military MRE paper matches. These also have tiny air bleeder holes, and I have refilled them several times with lamp oil, since the wicks are rather long and using a needle oiler, you can refill them in a few seconds with zero mess. I actually add more oil to these even when new and increase the burn times by 60 to 90 minutes. Here's a link to compare sizes and burn times. I've never bought from these guys, so I don't know about them. I just use them for comparing sizes and burn times. Keep up the great work. www.100candles.com/fuel_cells.htm

I like the “tindy roll” idea. The only reservation I have here is the SERE concept combined with the more civilian based “calorie conservation” idea of essentially requiring the body to go into a fast while providing the needed juice to escape, evade, stay on the move. I’ve gone 5 days without food before. By 72 hours in, most American men are suffering migraines, really bad head spins & lethargy. Keytosis starts fueling the body at 72-96 hours in and it’s actually those second 5 days (days 5-10) when that “fasting glow” and reserve energy from fat burning is reached. The solve? I’d keep a companion pack married to the one you demonstrated that’s nothing but a food/calorie module. Speaking from personal experience SERE and 3.5 days of no food are incompatible in a huge way. Even men with acute wilderness skills hit the wall badly when combining hardcore calorie demands with zero input. The difference between nothing in versus a few squeeze gels, peanut butter & a big protein bar per day is the difference between really good seasons of Survivor & a bunch of dirty people laying around a shelter infighting. Include food. And maybe one big contractors bag to do a poor man’s poncho. Save the e-blankets for shelter. Good video 👍🏼

Of course going 5 days without food wouldn’t be enjoyable, but it’s survivable. This is why military SERE schools have participants undergo a 5-6 day fast while having to survive, navigate, resist interrogation, etc.. The idea behind this kit is just to cover the basics for several days until a better environment can be found. It’s small enough to be carried around on the waist if away from camp. Adding more contents would require a larger pouch and kind of defeat the purpose of this particular concept. Of course if one had the chance to grab this pouch AND say another food bag in a rapid get outta dodge scenario, then that would more ideal.

Great ideas there. I too have the fire fly, but for a grab pouch I'd 100% carry a small Ferro rod. On my Bic lighters that I store like this, I always have a piece of bank line with a Canadian stopper knot that goes around and under the gas button.👍🏻👍🏻 Stops it being accidentally being pressed and loosing all your gas.

There does seem to be an ever existent primal urge to return to the struggles of our ancestors. It connects us to the past. For many, the first step down the path of greater self sufficiency begins with a cool looking survival kit video. Naturally skills follow. Don’t knock the dream, it’s a positive force and endures for a reason.

Even if he does not know any survival skill . The emergency blanket and the water purification Tabs in Conjunction with the water bags and the fire starter methods will raise his chance of survival far above the one who is unprepared. I personally came in a survival situation in the past during my several mountain hiking and Climbing extreme Tours and the rescue blanket helped me and a friend together with waterpurifikation & fire methods to stay warm and alive so we can reach 2 days later a hut .

Nicely thought out kit 👍 Maybe add a lifeboat ration food bar? And some iodine for cuts. I’d dispense with the wire saw and instead carry the medium tooth blade for a Silky Pocket Boy - it takes up hardly any space and cuts many times faster than wire saw, just wrap cloth or leather where you hold it.
