I lived in the UK, and I love it. London feels like my second home. When I was there, around 2001-2007, the knife paranoia was really ramping up. Signs on the tube urging people to rat out their mate if he's got a knife, etc. As much as I adore Britain, and the British, I'm grateful I live in a country that codified my right to carry the means to defend myself and my family. Having said all that, I really enjoyed this video. Very well done and thoughtful.

Thanks. I think due to our different histories and cultures we look at personal protection differently. Not having many guns in circulation makes life a lot safer here.
@MB_EDC

We don't have that many home invasions, assaults and kidnappings here in the Uk. The great myth of the gun lobby in the US - is that having guns freely available does not make people safer. Guns are needed for protection because guns are freely available. Fewer people are shot on purpose ( criminal activity) in the UK than children are shot by accident in the UK. I am not judging the US - or US citizens wanting guns. It is a different historical context and culture. Even if guns were banned - they would never be turned in.... We started from a differnt place in UK. I feel safer in the UK than when travelling in the US.

It is really well priced on Amazon and is the perfect size for the Cobra XS pliers. Good for on a belt, it is a little bulky for a pocket carry. I may look at a thinner pouch for that like the viperade VE10

Thank you for reminding me that I live in much saner country (Poland). If needed I could EDC 28cm (11in) fixed blade legally, even in public transport (unpractical but perfectly legal example). Locking utility knives (those with trapezoidal blades) are also legal, many people wear these with their keys. No, people are not stabbing themselves here like in the UK.

Unfortunately the general anti-knife feelings and draconian laws are based on knife crime which is predominantly between young males. As a 60 year old grandfather I should be trusted to carry a locking knife without hurting anyone. It is the law so I stick to it. If I need a locking or fixed blade knife for work or camping that is OK.

Really liked your video! EarthManEDC makes similar EDC videos, but using a non-pouch approach. I prefer the case/pouch like you show, but I think his approach could integrate well with yours in some instances. As far as blades go, another reason is airline travel. A knifeless / small-blade approach allows you to take an EDC kit onboard most airlines.

Similar to what I've being doing since I discovered the utility of the Knipex Cobra, mine are the XS. I don't do pouches in general and just carry my ''toolkit'' in my pocket. As to SAKs you don't really need to worry about recommending a specific one, they're all good and people choose which one to carry depending on what they need, I often carry my Climber with the Knipex, sometimes Farmer X. Both have clips. Other times I carry an actual folder like the Spyderco Urban, and add the Vic Moneyclip for scissors, but any folder plus a 58mm Vic with scissors will do the job. If you want the file and woodsaw as well as scissors, blades, openers, awl etc. there is the Ranger but I rarely need a file. I tried a variety of drivers and perused a number of pricey EDC specific drivers but all have their shortcomings. Ratchets with the bit holder in the end of the handle so you can use it as an inline driver are the way to go if you want a range of capability. I bought the Sealey mini ratchet (also sold under the brand Sabrecut). But more often I carry the smallest Wera bit driver (813) which is about the size of a Clipper lighter, and not expensive at around £10. Sits nicely in the 5th pocket of my jeans with a 2 in bit extender and a couple of bits so I can use it as a regular driver or a stubby. If I want torque, the hex end of the extender slots in the jaw adjustment slot on the Knipex.

Thanks - I wanted to give the saw option to match the Leatherman. but of course you are right - it depends on what sort of day you have planned as to what SAK you need. @@MB_EDC Of course that's the great thing about Victorinox, they have lots of choices and make quality tools, and the price is very reasonable so many of us can afford to have a variety to carry according to what we are doing on a specific day or in a specific scenario e.g. city, home, work, camping, travelling etc. For the price of a Leatherman Wave which at present is £110 if you shop around, normally more, and the Charge, Surge, Free P4 cost more, you can buy a Pioneer or Farmer, plus a Huntsman, Super TInker, and a Manager, for example, and rotate or mix & mathch according to your needs.

Another reason that I don't think I could live in the UK. The "locking" blade is a SAFETY feature so as you use it, it doesn't collapse against your fingers or hand and rip your flesh open. Bizarre law you have there.

I have the same knipex pouch, and agree it is perfect for an EDC. One difference is that instead of using up one of the side bands to hold a pen, I have put a Wera 813R bit holder in there. It fits in the side of the pouch perfectly. And is just big enough to be an actually useful screwdriver.

I own most of those tools and use them in a variety of kits, from biking to motorcycle to camping, hiking and hunting. For EDC, I have carried so many different tools and knives since the 80's. I got my first Letherman (original PST) in 1990. I've since purchased many others, and other brands from Gerber to SOG. They all have homes in kits and vehicles because other than the original PST, they are more than I'm willing to carry. Today my regular EDC is the Leatherman Skeletool CX and Victorinox Alox Bantam. I need a knife, and the blade lock is often essential for safety. I also need screwdrivers and pliers. The Skeletool is light and small, the 154CM blade is tough and razor sharp. I have the Bantam for very light tasks and I do love the Alox series. I'm in the US, the blade lock ban for such a small (2.6 inch) blade would be frustrating. It's not much of a weapon and the lock offers the user a level of safety from injury. You've done well with this; I don't carry illegally either. For me the issue isn't only the weight, it's also the size.

I have that same Victorinox driver/bit set. I find the L shaped adapter to be really, really slippery though making it difficult to use. I’ve replaced it with the 711L EDC ratchet. Intended for the bit adaptor on Leatherman tools, combined with the extender from that Draper kit. It fits perfectly in that little red bit holder along with all the bits I need. I have that in my EDC pouch for if I need it but could easily slip it into a little holster or have it loose in my pocket. I have a Rovyvon Aurora (I forget which) but it’s an older one that I’ve stuck some neodymium magnets too. This way it’s more usable for me, polycarbonate body so it’s very lightweight whilst still giving me what I need from a torch. If it is not a big problem for you and you like to carry it, you can cut the lock of the knife on the Leatherman Rebar and make it unlocked. I think this way there is no legal problem. However, I think that although your new kit has become a little larger in volume, there is not much difference in terms of weight, but it is much more useful and logical. It was a nice video.

Great video. On the Knipex case, the regular or 84mm? Swiss Army knife will fit in the red elastic side and a flashlight will fit on the other side and with the top closed they are 100% secure. That being said, IMHO, the path forward is the knifeleas rebar (with a separate knife) or bond or original PST or swisstool X other UK compliant multitool. As the knife in the kit you should really consider the Farmer X. In it you have both scissors and saw. The most complete SAK that is realistic and practical.
@MB_EDC
@MB_EDC Жыл бұрын
Thanks. The Farmer X is very capable. Less bulky than the Huntsman. Since making the video I have been using my Pioneer X Alox in it as I regularly use the scissors and awl, but not the saw. That may change over time.
@fastandcurious

I think the non-X Farmer would be a great choice. The scissors layer of a 93mm Vic Alox weighs about 23g. The whole Vic Manager weighs just a few grams more at about 30g. The Farmer without scissors is therefore leaner and cheaper - in my not so humble opinion.😉

Good point. It depends on which tools you expect to use the most. I rarely use the saw and probably use the scissors the most. I will be monitoring which tools I use on a regular basis

No locking blade in UK? That sucks. Government has a lot of control over people there.

You have to have a good reason to be carrying a locking knife or fixed blade. It would be OK if you needed it for work and were actually working. Otherwise could be a problem if stopped. Not ideal for knife collectors.

Great kit set up with the Knipex pouch. I have the Cobra XS pliers but now I'm going to buy the pouch and the Knipex Pliers wrench too. Then I will incorporate a mini torch and one of my Victorinox knives. Thanks for the information.

Glad you liked the video. I am working on a more pocket friendly version. I've found that this doesn't fit well in my pockets add I don't like carrying on my belt. I don't really like anything extra on my belt. Anyway the new video will be out later this week.

US here… interestingly, my 10yo daughters SAK has a locking blade. Rounded point, but the blade locks for safety. I know we’re just different, but our knife lobby is very strong and yet it took years to get our draconian knife laws reversed. Good luck to you.

That sounds very sensible. We make no allowance for the blade being blunt in the UK

Can I ask what I think is a reasonable question - why do all you EDC guys go for the Knipex Cobra or similar (when looking for multitool alternatives) as these do not replicate the pliers on most Multitools? My choice are the Knipex Needle-Nose Combination Pliers (145 mm 08 21 145) These do all that the Multitool pliers do only they are better, stronger and have more features. Cobra pliers are described by Knipex as 'water pump pliers' which multitool pliers are not.
@MB_EDC
@MB_EDC Жыл бұрын
Really good question. It really depends on what you mainly using the pliers for. If it mainly as a spanner-replacement for hexagonal nuts - then the Knipex Cobra XS or 125mm work exceptionally well for their size and much better that the usual multitool pliers. If you are mainly working with wire and need to cut the wire as well then your suggestion of the 145mm knipex pliers would work well or to go smaller with the Knipex 25 01 125. A combination of the two would work well and I have been looking into the next version of this toolkit with some small needlenose pliers/cutter as well as the cobraXS... It should be out in 2-3 weeks....
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 Жыл бұрын
Multitool, needlenose or other combination pliers are practically useless on nuts & bolts as the jaws are not parallel when opened, and they just slip when you try to twist. It's a trade-off between wire cutting or fastener opening/closing capability. I have to deal with fasteners much more often than cut wire so the Cobras are more useful as EDC.
@MB_EDC
@MB_EDC Жыл бұрын
@@simonh6371 I agreee. I rarely cut wire - but I have thought about including a small pair of wirecutters in a new version of this toolkit.

How do you cut wire? That’s probably what I do the most with my Leatherman. That’s the one thing that keeps me from completely switching to my SAK Huntsman and a set of those knipex pliers. Also, as a one and done, all purpose plier, I’ve had a hard time finding better than Leatherman. Did order some 4.5” old school slip joint pliers, that may work, I like everything on the SAK better, all the tools are much better than Leatherman’s.

I don't need to cut wire often as I have an office based job. I have a basic toolkit in my car with cutters included and can support this with a few small tools in my work bag. I will be looking to reduce this pocket toolkit if I rarely use some tools.

Ive just received my leatherman arc. I carry it on my belt all day, every day. I live in the uk in a remote village. Some guys carry a fixed blade. Nobody is offended here. Going into the city is obviously different.

I'm sure you'll be OK where you live. The issue is that it's policed differently in different places in the UK. It is an order to carry any locking blade in public without good reason. Just be careful where you do.

what about other kinds of utility knives?
@MB_EDC
@MB_EDC Жыл бұрын
Utility knives are a problem in the UK as they are not legal carry. I thought the Milwaukee 6in1 is great because of the bit driver. So if It were permitted I would carry that. Did you have another utility knife in mind?

Though the voice is a tad tedious, the content is relevant if one is looking for a compact EDC that is UK Legal to carry. I personally include the Alox Victorinox - a) 'cos I have one and b) for the beefier blade & excellent awl. Fisher Space Pens are smaller than the Zebra, so that is a better option and a spare AAA Lithium (energizer) battery for whichever flashlight is chosen would be wise. Both O-Lite and LED Lenser make fine AAA-cell lights which fit the side pockets on a Knipex pouch. Finally - and most essential in such a kit - you should ditch the Knipex mini-Cobras and replace with another Knipex - who make the best pliers in the world - but in this case, a small Plier-Wrench. Expensive, but parallel, smooth jaws, immense grip, no surface marring and a great range of sizes. Their ONLY fault is - just like Leathermans - you Cannot buy just one...

Why can't you simply remove the razor blade in the Milwaukee Fastback in order to comply with British legal code? One of the selling points of the Fastback 1505 is that you can take the blade out when you travel by plane.

Which is good but because you need to carry a separate knife - which in itself isn't per se a bad thing - it kind of defeats the purpose of carrying a multitool which is supposed to be a ''one and done'' carry. I have the Bond and I do like it but it lacks scissors so again I have to accompany it with a SAK with scissors, not a ''one and done'' solution. The only other full size UK legal multi from a reputable manufacturer is the Gerber MP600 bladeless which has a number of pros and cons, honestly I wish I'd bought the Rebar bladeless instead of it. Good tools on the Rebar (with or without blade) are the pliers with the wire cutters which are very capable, the file, and drivers, especially the Phillips which I'd rate higher than the 2D offerings on Rev, Wingman, Free Series etc but also higher than the flat bits on the Wave etc. The saw disappointed me a bit (I have the standard version with blades) as it's thinner as well as shorter than the saw on my SAKs.
@MB_EDC
@MB_EDC Жыл бұрын
Yes the rebar blade-less version. I think the Bond doesn't have locking tools/blades. The benefit of separate told is that you can use the screw driver and the pliers at the same time.
