This was a fun video to create, short and simple! The video shows the creation of the 737 Tiller and operation. It's 3d printed and works amazeballs!
The fun comes halfway through the video, P3D has given me a serious beasting! It refuses to load! Takes over 2 hours to load Gatwick and sucks like a 1980s MTV music video looking back on a past era.
Then the magic happens! Im taxing around Gatwick, P3D comes to life. Planes appear, textures appear and generally, it stops sucking!
One more video to come in short order! The building of the display and graphics. However, MSFS is just too gorgeous to show in this cockpit video.
It's in a different league!
Kind Regards Karl

Hi! I'm a 13 year-old romanian aviation enthusiast that has a 3d printer. I just found your website and I find it amazing that someone put so much work in to completely redesign the cockpit of a 737 in order for it to be easily made at home. Can you please tell me how to get started, how much the files for the whole cockpit cost (or if i get them separatly are they free?) and if I can use only my 3d printer to manufacture the parts?

You should put this in a shipping container mounted on hydraulic jacks!
@helimech8152
@helimech8152 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephan, I think that's the million-dollar question that everyone has. That would be the ultimate dream. But for me, this is just a hobby and the sim will remain a fixed base. Over the years I have thought about making a moving base unit. But for the 737 is not currently an option. The last time I looked at the hydraulic jacks they came in at around 6000-12000 pounds each, to which I would require 6. Then you have all the equipment required to run and control the unit. I really can see why the real simulators cost so much. To make things even harder, where would I put it? This thing is already massive and I dread the day we have to return home to our little house in the UK. I am currently designing a heli sim, which is lightweight and hopefully, electric actuators can be used. But that's a future project. probably a bit more of an in-depth answer than you were looking for, but I have thought about it many times over the years. Kind Regards Karl

@@helimech8152 Thanks Karl! There are a lot of wires to connect everything ! I wondered whether you could connect all the devices via network cables and UDP protocol. ipMidi allows you to connect MIDI devices over a computer network. It doesn’t use TCP/IP but instead uses Multipacket UDP which gives it a lot more bandwidth than standard MIDI. If you were to use a UDP layer, you would almost want it to be invisible to the existing client/server software you are using.

Hi Tom, I was supposed to be Dual Yoke, But waiting on parts, its been over 3 months now. So for the time being and to get in the air on both P3D and MSFS2020, im going to get the Captains yoke done first. Once the parts arrive, like carrier bearings, inline turnbuckles, sprockets and chains, then i will convert to dual yoke setup. Also, been thinking a lot recently on the centering mechanism, force feedback and force trim. Hopefully i can get this sorted on the captains side and use is also for the FO side. Kind Regards Karl

G’day Karl, Fantastic project you’ve made - your wife must be incredibly patient! Your design is just an amazingly simple yet effective solution. So thank you! However, I’m wondering about your pedals? All of your other designs are fantastic, so I’m obviously a bit intrigued what you use. I’ve designed some pedals loosely off the 787, but they aren’t the pedestal style. I’m going to try and adapt your tiller mechanism for the centre and sensor pickup, I think it would be perfect. Perhaps with some increased scale for added strength. Finally, you mentioned using a capacitor to remove the jitter when calibrating. Can you explain this a little more in a video or blog post on your site? I’m sure you would do such a fantastic job at enlightening us all. Best regards down there in Brunei.

G'day Karl, Two little snippets for you. Check that you have not got your tiller active in the main FS program ( PrePar3D) and FSUIPC. There is conflict if you try to calibrate with both active. It causes the jitters you mentioned. assign in one only. When you assign the "card" in the P3D configuration ....move the tiller so you get a reading on the top bar, the just hit the "A" box next to the assignment box and hey presto ...it finds your Bodnar card assignment automatically. I will try to put something up on my channel soon.

Hello Les, Great to hear from you again! You wouldn't believe the hassle i have of deselecting all the controls in the different programs! You are completely right, if theirs a duplicate control, we spend days trying to figure out why we had no elevators despite the PROSIM showing in the config page all was good. In the end i had move the Elevator control from Prosim, and move it to FSUIPC. Tony that came to have a ho in the sim, had to bounce the aircraft off a hill, or house to get airborne. That flummoxed me. As always Les, Thank you for the advice, it really is appreciated. Im on holiday with my wife Helen right now, but am determined to get the control column sorted next! Hi. It is immediately obvious that you are a trained avionics/aircraft tech because of the way you wire it up - lovely. My degree was in avionics so I have done this sort of wiring before and it is mega rewarding to see it all beautifully loomed and laced. Question: have you used a VR headset in your 737 simulator? I know that kinda defeats the point of building such a faithful, accurate cockpit, but I want to get back into the air soon (PPL & IMCr holder), and would like to use the new MS flight Sim (or maybe even Xplane11) to practise cockpit checks/memory items, but It is much, MUCH more realistic to have a real instrument panel. I'd really like to be in a VR headset, but able to operate switches on a real instrument panel - do you think VR headsets (specifically the tracking technology) would present an accurate enough virtual panel that the panel switches would feel exactly where the VR picture shows them to be? I am kinda suspecting that's a 'no', but I'm asking in case the tech is better than I'm giving it credit for? Sorry for the long question!
@helimech8152
@helimech8152 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Edward, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Thank you for the great comment. I haven't tried MSFS in virtual reality, but I know a lot of people cant get enough of it. Is it good enough to carry out cockpit checks and muscle memory programming. Really im not sure. But i would hazard a guess to some extent. But nothing is going to beat sitting in a full sim cockpit to practice just that, especially when there's no consequences when you get it wrong. The good thing about Prosim is the included instructors station, which tells you what ha been missed or needs to be completed as you go through the checks. Prosim however, is type specific, where as MSFS in virtual reality, you download the aircraft type and your ready to go. I think what I'm trying to say here, is that i have no real quality advice to give here! Either option can be a costly experience to start out with! Kind Regards Karl

I have got to say what a GREAT SIM in every way m8e. Whats your view on Air Manager with touch screen buttons? I am at the cusp of either building a fully functional 737 home cockpit like you have based your sim on. I have got FS2020 as you can imagine. Do you think I should use Air Manager for all the functions to get the same overall feeling of the sim?. The noises are important as well yes? I have 400mm square Creality CR-X dual colour FDM and Resin Photon printers but the costs can be immense when you start adding up the costs of the buttons/interface boards and god knows how much MDF you have used yeah!. Your comments are welcome on that. I think you in IT like me yes! I come from the 8bit days 20yrs ago and building a home cockpits would have cost £30k and 5xCRT monitors/computers... You get the point. I have tried before with an AutoPilot Self Contained (Blackbox solution) with other bespoke hardware which cost £500+ from Australia for AP and list goes on. And other add-ons which in all via FSUPC was clunky.... Look forward to your reply. Regards, Andy ps. I started a while ago as I said but with 480p Projectors with the CRT's and there was too much heat!!!! 35c in Winter lol. I boarded up the windows to keep the light out. You get my point... I think...

@@helimech8152 Fantasic job with both your cockpit and the videos. I'm actually up in the 30 ports myself for my 320 DIY homecockpit. But I am having many problems the USB connections. After every PC boot there are several devices not recognised (Mega2560, LeoBodnar836 and/or Ultimarc Packled64 cards). Swapping the affected device to another port or even to another hub often does not recover the device. I have updated w10, uodated the BIOS, disabled energy savings, removed all USB services in device manager to reinstall their drivers. I changed the USB cables and removed any long USB cables. I have changed the power supplies of the USB hubs. All my hubs are powered USB3.0 hubs and I even installed an extra PCIe 4x USB3.0 port card. But the problem is still not solved. Heli Mech great, on another note what’s a good rotary switch with say 4 positions to use with the leo card as they offer 12 positions but I don’t want to loose 12 slots? Cheers!

I have tried to connect my encoders to my PMDG737NGX via mobiflight but nothing happens, when I turn the encoder. In mobiflight I have exactly programmed everything the same like you did in your MCP tutorial video. I used the offsets that you used but nothing happens.

Hello CocoNo, I use 3 different boards in the sim: Arduino Micro, Arduino Leonardo Leobonar BUX036A Micro is my favourite as its small and cheap. But requires a dedicated joystick sketch to function. Kind Regards Karl

@@helimech8152 interesting... I use the adafruit pro micro I just wanted to know if yhere was a better option. Since the pro micro only has 1024 bit analog resolution and it requires programming. Also that the pc can only deal with one arduino at once

Hi Baris AK, Its coming, But i have no operating Control Column right now, and we have to bounce the aircraft off a hill or house to get airborne (something i don't really want to show on video lol). Its the next job on the list to get right. If i can produce all the controls like the tiller, i'd be a very happy man! Kind Regards Karl.

@@helimech8152 Henrik here. Thanks for that. I thought this must be a much easier project. 3x12inch displays, 4x7inch and finally 1x3,5inch and no soldering for the fmc, way fewer buttons. All screens are ordered so i Will update with another video. Kinda got the idea from air manager, but I thought that there was way too much constructions in programming panels (and expensive), so i thought there must be a easier solution, hence the Raspberry Pi screen sharing over network without using additional software. Since each RPI have 2 HDMI outputs i will try out if i can drive 2 displays on each PI, but my plan A is to use one RPI for each display but I will see. A Pi 4 is roughly 32 USD here in Denmark. With a small 7 inch display its a small 1.5 amps. Encoders, led, buttons is driven seperatly by arduino.
