Helite Turtle Airbag Vest Review
www.revzilla.co...
As product that offers street riders an advanced level of safety that has to this point been reserved for the track only, the Helite Turtle Airbag Vest is blazing a path as one of the premier protective advances in motorcycling. Providing protection to the spine and vital organs, the Turtle CE certified airbag will deploy in 0.1 seconds, giving riders almost immediate protection. Additional features include a removable SAS-TEC back protector, adjustable side straps, and interior 3D mesh for comfort.

I've had my Helite TT for two years and it gets used everyday. It is comfortable to wear and you soon get into the habit of buckle up and un buckle before climbing off your bike. I've now had the experience to test my TT in a collision situation. I'm convinced that this saved me from significant injury. It doesn't come cheap but then neither does a half decent helmet or medical bills.

After more than a year of almost daily use, me and another friend of mine can recommend the Helite Turtle vests as they do not inconvenience the rider at all and adds a lair of confidence (to your loved ones as well). No accidental discharges ever happen and we both forgot to disconnect on many occasions before getting used to it (takes 2 weeks). Airbags provide impact resistance that is far beyond what hard armour can achieve and walking away from a (maybe) otherwise crippling or fatal accident is priceless. Money you will never regret spending.

+Two Legged Cat33 no, I tried one a couple of weeks ago and it doesn't hurt. But it feels rather tight, a bit claustrophobic. They inflate on both sides so they won't lay flat on your chest. And that's probably what makes it so uncomfortable, since they're rock hard. It feels a bit like getting pushed in the chest and in the back at the same time. But If you want to deflate it faster you can simply unscrew the cartridge and let the air out.

My view is that the concept is great and I do believe that Helite offer the best mechanical system and the best hyper flexion/extension protection (e.g. versus HitAir). But annoyingly I just couldn't get one of these to fit me properly. I am 5"11, 155 lbs with a 38" chest. The medium was way too wide and was flappy and rode up when on the bike. The small was too short and bits of the velcro collar wouldn't stay down and kept sticking to the bottom of my helmet. If they could sort the sizing I would definitely get one. If you are a short/tin or a tall fatty then you are sorted. N.B inflation times. The Turtle inflation time is 0.08s. This is the best of the mechanical airbag vests and will definitely help. The new vest (part digital) coming out at some point in the next year has a faster trigger+inflation time (one forum suggests in the region of 0.05 seconds). If you do the maths you will see that this is what you really need. You can get one in black if the Hi-Viz offends :)

I've been riding with one of these for the past 18 months or so. You quickly get in the habit of "hooking in" when you get on the bike and releasing when you put the kickstand down. The vest is comfortable and very visible (I have the yellow version) to cagers day or night. I spent almost 10 years working in trauma center hospitals and really bought this for the neck immobilization it provides in conjunction with a full face helmet. As someone mentioned in the comments, you can live with a broken or missing leg or arm, but not a broken neck.

@RevZilla
@RevZilla Жыл бұрын
That is correct, but not always the case. Any tethered airbag system REQUIRES you to leave X distance (length of tether) before it deploys. So yes, if you never leave that distance it won't deploy - which is where algorithm based units have the advantage. Both style of airbags are all reactive though, meaning the accident has already begun before they deploy since they can't predict the future.

"Keep a few back up cartridges". Lol. How often are people expecting to be thrown off their motorcycles!?! It's a great idea in case the worst happens but if you're crashing so often that you're concerned with running out of airbag fuel than maybe you should just stay home.

The backup cartridges are in the event that there's a need to change the cartridge out. One good example is if you're riding in the rain and notice rust or other corrosion forming, the cartridge would need to be swapped out to ensure reliability.
@OhYeaMista
@OhYeaMista 6 жыл бұрын
Affordable Plumbing Sure. They should be replaced every year or two if they look rusted. I can buy into that. That's a lot different than keeping "a few backup...in your tool box". If you notice it's rusty or realize it's been years since you replaced it, order a new one. I'm sure it'll last 3 days until the replacement arrives. I would even understand keeping ONE extra in case of accidental inflation, forgetting to unclip while getting off bike for example. It was just the nonchalant way he said to keep a few on hand that made me chuckle. We're talking about something you hope never goes off.

Yea that's what I assumed. Dainese d-air systems allow backpacks to be worn. It all depends on the amount of psi the little co2 canister can deliver. This system uses 1 canister while dainese uses 2 so I'm not sure if the helite has enough pressure.

I own a Leatt STX neck brace. I couldn't wear my neck brace with this product, so I'm curious if you think this airbag product would have the same hyper extension protection as the Leatt brace. I think one question difficult to answer is the protection of Helite airbag worn over an armored jacket, vs. the protection of Leatt STX+chest protector+armored jacket. Thoughts?

Yes, the Helite is designed to provide similar protection against neck hyperextension and spinal compression. Probably LG-L. The vests are made to be long enough to sit on, but you do not want the rib protection so low that it is covering below the waist. The other fit to avoid is wearing the vest too small so it rides up high under the arms. The vest should have a loose fit and be long enough to cover the hip and pelvic areas in the event of an accident. -DrewZilla

No, it cannot be worn under a race suit. It must be worn over top of a riding jacket. The Helite GP Air Track Airbag Vest is designed to be worn over a race suit. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/helite-gp-air-track-airbag-vest

1) This would do its own job without other gear. It could save your spine or kidneys. 2) You are going to look like ground meat if you get off the bike over 25 mph without decent skid protection this does not provide.

What do you think which one is the better Helite turtle 1 or Helite turtle 2?

The Turtle 2 is basically just a style update, so functionally both are the same. Neither is better in that regard. -DrewZilla *bit.ly/Helite

can you put it in your jacket?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 7 жыл бұрын
No, it needs the space outside the jacket in order to expand. Helite does make a couple jackets that incorporate the airbag inside the jacket, but those jackets have large stretch areas that expand when the airbag is deployed. See the photos on the product pages linked below, which show the jackets with the airbags inflated. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/helite-adventure-airbag-jacket *www.revzilla.com/motocross/helite-leather-airbag-jacket

Fair enough. But: 1. It's cheaper and less painful than hospital in case of a serious crash. 2. If it is a serious crash, and you have insurance, insurance should replace it. 3. If it isn't a serious crash, refilling the airbag cost like $20. Price really isn't a good argument against it. The real problem with it that no one can hide, is the fact that it is ugly as hell.
@NextGen_Pants
@NextGen_Pants 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is pretty ugly, but they should non-hi-vis versions. Hit-Air has some pretty good looking vests and jackets with the system built in. I like those options, as I'd rather not look like I'm wearing life preserver as I ride.

It's the same price as you would spend a decent helmet. 78 percent of all accidents including chest injury. You would be an idiot not to consider it. Having said that, yanks don't like to wear safety gear. They would rather die,but look good doing it.
