How to set up the helix knitting for the hat, finish the top, and another use for this technique.
Hat start: 1:52
Finish top: 8:10
Another way to use this technique: 16:22
One additional note: If you divide the number of stitches by the number of colors, the last color will go past your start point and the spiral will be slightly lopsided.

Thank you for explaining your count of the minus 1 skein. Left-handed or right-handed your tutorial was brilliantly done.

Thank you. Other videos I've seen omit the minus 1. This becomes confusing when you hit the double long section in every round.

It’s so nice to see another lefty knitter. I can knit both ways but knit primarily lefty. Your stitches are beautiful! Thank you for a great tutorial!❤

I'm glad you liked it. Left handed knitting is not well represented on youtube. I always hope my videos help someone struggling in this right handed world.

Thank you for sharing. I really liked your tip of holding the yarn in front, so you can find it easily!

Glad it was helpful! If I don't hold the yarn in front I just pass by the yarn change.

You’re the first and only person so far who explained how to decrease using the helix technique. I’m making a stuffed rabbit starting with the top of its head, so I’ll apply your tips when I’m increasing. It’ll be a journey! Lol

Finally someone who shows how to not only start and knit with the Helix method, you’re the first one I found who shows how to finish it on a hat. Thank you very much!! I loved watching how you knit.

You are welcome! My knitting method was self taught over 60 years ago, long before the continental method was popular. Being a left handed knitter, I must dissect every pattern to see if changes are needed for me to knit it. No changes are needed for helix. It works left to right or right to left.

Great tutorial, thank you. Through me off at first, didn’t realize you are knitting left handed. That’s great. I am left handed, but taught myself to knit right handed. Couldn’t find much for left handed tutorials. I like the idea of leaving the unworked yarn up front.

You are welcome. Since you are left handed you should learn to knit left handed too. When you can knit both ways you never have to turn your work. As hard as I try I can't knit right handed with any speed and my tension doesn't match my left handed knitting.

Thank you for this useful video on helical knitting using more than two colors. Am I understanding correctly that you are not slipping 3 stitches before each color change? Is that because you have the yarns evenly spaced out? Thank you!
@justnorthofthebend9152
@justnorthofthebend9152 Жыл бұрын
You need to understand that all hats knitted in the round are spirals. The helix just adds multiple strands. Slipping 3 stitches is not necessary whether 2 colors or more. I evenly space the color changes as explained in the video. Just drop the working yarn when you come to the next color and pick up the new one.

If you are knitting the hat with only 2 colors you need to start the second color about halfway around and not at the beginning of a row.....there will be no jog to fiddle with.

Only if you are right handed. I have been knitting left to right (left handed) for over 65 years. Since I read left to right who can say it's backwards.

Holy moly that is incredible! I'm going to have to watch this many more times because I can't wrap my brain around this yet 🤣 I was trying to watch closely as you changed colors but I couldn't tell, how did you prevent the color jog? I know how to do it but I don't think we do it the same way. So another dumb question, the balls of yarn don't get trimmed until the very end? ...they all stay connected to your project yes? I would have loved to have seen it inside out for educational purposes and how you finish it but I sure appreciate your video and talent! ❤❤❤
@justnorthofthebend9152
@justnorthofthebend9152 3 жыл бұрын
The reason for helix (spiral) knitting is to eliminate the jog and the need to cut the yarn to change colors. This only works when knitting in the round. The inside looks just like the outside but it's the purl side, no tails, just knitting. Review the beginning of the video. Once the sequence of colors is set up, you just knit, dropping one color when you come to the next one. I hope this helps.

@@justnorthofthebend9152 yes this helps a lot! I just can't mentally visualize it. (If that makes sense) but I know I'll be able to do it now thanks to you, I just need to see it "in person" as I make it. That was an excellent video! I am curious if I saw it correctly, but when you finish with the drawstring closure, are you putting the needle through each loop from the right to the left of each loop? Does that make sense what I'm asking? I've only seen videos of people doing the drawstring closure where they put the needle and yarn through the loop from left to right and continue feeding the needle through that way. Thank you again so much for taking the time to respond 💕
@justnorthofthebend9152

For the closure, I just slip the stitches knit wise onto the yarn needle and pull through.

It all depends on your point of view. I'm left handed and knit left to right, the way you read and write. The results are the same no matter which direction you knit and the needles work both ways.

at the end of your first round, after knitting the 24 green sts, you say you're going to change colors but then you don't...you don't mention when you begin to overlap the colors...??? BTW...it's like watching a left-handed guitar player to see you knitting left handed...of course I use this technique, but for me, it's KBB...

After the first round the blue is waiting to be used next. I just pick it up and keep going .I'm sorry my left-handedness bothers you. I had to teach myself to knit because my mother could not and every book on the subject was not for lefties. That was over 60 years ago.
