It’s laughable when he suggests that Govt of India should be grateful to him that his company illegally increased production of Vicks Vaporub and hence met the challenge of a cold epidemic. This is where the MNC’s were making a fool of poor ignorant Indians who did not know that Vicks VapoRub cannot cure the common cold; at best it can help relieve some symptoms or create such an illusion. What is it if not a mere blend of some natural ingredients like camphor, eucalyptus, wintergreen oil etc which are already widely known. At the time there were simple substitutes selling at a fraction of the price and with far less subterfuge. The ambiguous promotion of products like Vicks undermined the far greater beneficial impact of practices like gargling with hot salt water and inhalation. Such products should be sold with disclaimers. I am reminded of a recent claim about the invention of Curcuma Longa, a new magic drug formulation, which is nothing but our own Haldi. Is this why we want a Free Market ?

In his narration about Vicks Vaporub production he reveals contempt for government and its laws; he reveals a sense of entitlement to break the law; and in his MNC mindset he reveals disdain and disinterest to find out if it would have been possible to apply for permission to produce what they did. It’s quite possible that this may have been possible if he had only stepped off his high horse and asked.

A significant percentage of people working in farms could have been moved out of agrarian lowly paid jobs had we bothered to invest in tourism. Tourism is the industry which depends on a large number of people who are not highly educted but are adequately trained in hospitality business. On the otherhand, installation of large factories is much more time consuming and creats reducing number of jobs with growing automation.
