Blood Red Snow is another good book by Gunter K, Kocherrek he was a German Machine gunner on the Ostfront. Theres also Albrecht Wacker who was a German Sniper on the Ostfront, both those books are biographies, basically their diaries of their time in the war, brutal reads. Most especially the sniper one, alot of stuff i read in there which was last year still haunts my thoughts when i watch anything on WW2 and the Ostfront, it was like reading a reality version of a horror movie with intense gore, and just insane stuff i cant fathom, its almost traumatizing.

Growing up I would listen to the horror that my Mother and her side of our family endured in those last days of WWII! Watching this video put a face on the events that unfolded back then! Eastern Austria is where my Mother lived at the time and hid in the near by forest when the Soviets invaded! They also flattened every single home as they moved in to the interior of the country! This is the hatred they had for the Germans! Thanks for the video!!!! !!!!!!!

The sheer scale of the eastern front is lost by most people today. The German army was professsional, competent, and well equipped. That 1941 army could have taken on any country in the world, but they never had enough soldiers, food, fuel, and logistics to keep advancing into the vast reaches of Russia. The fact that they made it that far, and held on for for so long, is a testament to the tenacity of those men. They sufferred great hardships being thrust into a pointless conflict started by their own corrupt/evil leadership. All of us that serve find out sooner or later that ALL people are subject to propaganda and are mere pawns to the ruling class. The "enemy" soldiers are not much different from us.

Carl Philipp Gottlieb von Clausewitz (1780 - 1831) Prussian major general and military scientist: "The Russian Empire is not a country that can literally be conquered, i.e. kept occupied, at least not with the powers of current European countries. Such a country can only be conquered by its own weakness and by the confusion of the inner conflict." Napoleon had already had to know that bitterly. But Hitler's strength was not clever and strategic thinking. He thought he was a superhuman. In reality it was only average. The concept of the lightning war cannot be applied to such a huge country that extends over two continents. The German Wehrmacht was for a quick victory, but was not prepared for a long -term war in adverse climatic conditions. Even the torrential rain that started in autumn has transformed the Russian roads into a swamp and almost brought the advance to a standstill. The German soldiers had no corresponding clothing for the winter that started below. And at the extremely low temperatures, the weapons failed. The attack on the Soviet Union started too late. The attack should begin in spring. Then the Wehrmacht would have reached Moscow before the autumn and winter storms. But the attack had to be postponed for months because the Wehrmacht had to support the Italians in their unauthorized invasion in the Balkans. Without German help, the Italians had failed t.

@@r3dpowel796 Yes. 100 divisions of extremely hard and tough Siberian troops began the long march from Siberia to the western Soviet Union in September, 1941. They marched through Moscow on Dec 6th, and counter attacked the freezing wehrmacht outside of Moscow on Dec 7th. The astounded, out manned and out gunned wehrmacht quickly fell back. Probably the turning point of the Russo-German war, along with Stalingrad and Kursk.

From my uncle who served in the Wehrmacht: In the East, 15.8.42 My dear ones! You must have been worried that you haven't received any mail from me for 11 days now. But the reason for that is not because of me. Firstly, we couldn't write so far because no mail was sent out nor did any arrive, and secondly, we simply didn't have any time for it. You should see how I am writing this letter right now. I am lying on my back in my foxhole and can't lift my head, as I have to expect at any moment that I might get hit. Yes, the last 10 days were damn tough. The first days, every day in a different filthy hole, and then on top of it, rain every day. Here we are now, lying here for 3 days already, and we absolutely must hold the position. We have more food than we need, but we haven't had anything warm for 5 days. We have absolutely nothing besides what we have on our bodies; everything else is lost. Thank God, I still had some writing paper with me, otherwise, I wouldn't even be able to write to you now. When I can or may write again, I don't know yet. Today, everyone is only allowed to write one letter. Unfortunately, our boss was wounded yesterday. This is the fifth time, and it's serious. Unfortunately, I haven't received any mail from you yet. I assume it got lost or was destroyed. Only from Alwin Hübner did I receive a letter today. He writes that I should tell him more about Emil. You can already tell him that, although I inquired about it, I learned little. As soon as I have time, I will write to him myself. Unfortunately, I had to learn this morning that Ludwig Neu was wounded again about 8 days ago. Whether it's serious or not, I don't know. Now I will close for today once again. I hope you are all still healthy and well. With best wishes and hopes for a healthy reunion, I greet you many times. He was wounded a couple of hours later from shrapnel and died the next day. RIP

Freed from National Socialism? You are a cynic. The Red Army was plundering, raping and murdering in Germany. She has raped millions of German women and even little girls. She has overrun refugee stretches with her tank. She brutally murdered German civilians - women, children, old people. And that should have been liberation? Yes, they have "freed" the Germans from their belongings, from their homeland and their life. Incidentally, the Soviets were no better than the National Socialists. They are responsible for the death of millions of innocent people. They have brought the "liberated" countries to their tyranny. So no reason to be proud. Quote from the US General Patton: "The difficulty in understanding the Russian is that we do not take cognizance of the fact that he is not a European, but to Asiatic, and Therefore Thinks Deviously. We can no more understand a russian than a Chinaman or a Japanese, and from what i have seen of them, i have no particular desire to understand topic, except to ascertain how much lead or iron it take to kill them. In Addition to his other Asiatic Characteristics, The Russian Have No Regard for Human Life and is an all out son of Bitch, Barbarian, and Chronic Drunk. "

I do wonder what would have happened if Hitler had directed his lavishly equipped panzers against Leningrad in 1943 and left Kursk in a defensive position? The bulge was such an obvious target - it would have made a much better elaborate deceptive operation. Army Group North being stuck up in Leningrad is a huge reason the Wehrmacht lost on the Eastern Front. If they had secured the city and left residual troops behind, perhaps that would have bolstered the defense further south.

Good collation of actual battlefield films...BUT the concentration of the discussion is about the brutality on both sides (and what war isn't), so, if you're looking for the whys and how of tactics and strategy, with explanations involving maps, then look elsewhere. What most historians ignore and fail to say is that the Soviet Union did not participate in the drafting NOR DID THEY SIGN the 1929 Geneva Convention which covered the treatment of POWs during World War II. Even if the Soviets had not signed, Germany had signed the Geneva Convention of 1929 and was bound by article 82...But the Nazis (being Nazis) deemed the war in the East to be a war of annihilation, so despite the obscure pockets of civility that existed (and there are some), why the shocking wonder about the bestiality and brutality and the GENERAL absence of humanity on this side of WW2?

Just look at the conversation between Hitler and Mannerheim in 1942. American help was a minor factor in the whole war on the East. Russia win the war, not America. ,,Today there is a tank plant, where during the first shift a little more than 30.000. and round the clock little more than 60.000. workers would have laboured- a single tank plant! A gigantic factory! Masses of workers who certainly lived like animals." If somebody told me the nation could start with 35.000. tanks, then I'd have said "you are crazy!" - Adolf Hitler (1942) Hitler was a bad informed. If he had known what the Russians have in their disposal, he would never invade USSR. Barbarossa failed already in august 1941. and Germany was lost. Hitler hoped that Stalin would offer a truce, but it never come, because the cunning Stalin had already decided to enter Berlin. What people also don't understand, Germany was doomed from very begining. Pact in august 1939. was just a temporary. Stalin would attack anyway. USSR was a way too strong. The only chance for Third Reich to stay alive was to invade only West without touch Poland, because invading Poland meant encroaching on the Soviet zone of influence. Leaving Poland completely to Stalin was the only thing that could calm the USSR.

Where are you getting this? Whether or not a given people in Eastern Europe were considered Aryan by the Nazjs was contingent on two things: the country they lived in, and their phenotype. Most Balts, for example, were considered “Aryan”, while most Poles were not, however, individual Poles were considered “Aryan” (hence Germany’s taking in of ~20k Polish children who were deemed Aryan and taken by German families).

@@faucistopguy1852 I'm getting this from reading the writings of Nazis like Generalmajor Friedrich von Mellenthin who authored the book 'Panzer Battles'. He consistently referred to the Russians as "Asiatic". He and other Nazis referred to the fact that the Mongols conquered and ruled over Eastern Europe for centuries. They believed this infusion of Asian DNA into the blood of the Slavs left an indelible mark both genetically and culturally, consequently the Slavs are not European, they aren't even white or human, they're untermensch or subhuman (according to Nazi ideology). One may argue against the Nazi interpretation of race but, I would argue their interpretation is just as legitimate as any other interpretation because, the bottom line is all interpretations of race are social constructs not rooted in any hard science like genetics.

These were SIBERIAN Soviet divisions, not Mongolian. Mongolia fought mostly against the Japanese, not the Russians. Towards the end of the war, Mongolians provided one brigade, an air unit, and 300 volunteers in the Eastern Front. What are your sources for Mongolian participation in the Eastern Front, may I ask?

@@aaqibjavaid1816 no it wasn't, several of the main reasons the Germans lost was the width of the USSR's territory which far dwarfed Western Europe. The scorched Earth policy robbing the Axis of grain, wheat and other resources. The huge resources of men and equipment the USSR had no matter how many casualties they suffered such as the Soviet tanks which took out the highest numbers of Axis tanks. The Western Allies sending supplies helped no doubt but wasn't the sole reason how the USSR won.
