I love the parallel between the lyrics, as if the character portrayed in the song is the personification of Justice, indiscriminate, never truly good or evil.

The way that I see the protagonist in this song is as a preacher who as a youth was cast out due to doubts of the preacher's words, who through his years of absence read the Bible, learning of God, and his influence. They also became a gunslinger during this time, fighting for their life in the old west. They come back to their hometown, learning that the other preacher was a money hungry cult leader that disguised their true intention for their selfish gain, and so the protagonist, set fire to the town and church, killing the preacher and teaching the actual truth afterwards. Brutal, indiscriminate, but learned.
