The opening was extremely good and the premise was very interesting, but the actual anime itself was definitely not up to par with the others, especially considering how well animated other shows and their fights were. It started off strong and had an interesting ending in my opinion, but the middle section was kind of lackluster, to be frank. Definitely looking forward to season 2, however. It's still a good series.

@@randomannoyance True. But MAPPA fans tend to be a particular egregious brand of willful illiteracy and obsessive studio culture. Shingo Yamashita directed two of the OPs mentioned here, and Kamata the other. MAPPA isnt some fully consistent studio like kyoani where at least blanket praise makes some sense. Even some old madhouse fans have the Maruyama period for some consistency to praise. Any commonality between more recent MAPPA works is generally poor compositing (Jigokuraku is a really bad offender here), but that's hardly some universal truth under the right staff either.

I’m sure that the actual directors deserve a ton of credit, I just happen to love openings made by the studio that produced them 😅. As far as I was aware, I would have assumed a production studio has at least somewhat of a say in artistic direction since they’re the ones providing the funds haha. So good for the staff! If Anyone is wondering why it sounds odd: Its in 4/4 time (or other signature divisible by 4) but the rythyms are subdivided weirdly in groups of 4 3 4 and 5. You can count it by counting each group of numbers between each "big note" of the main rythym. If you layer the actual beat with just sections of 4 over top of the 4345, it makes a cool polyrythymesque feel

I just want to appreciate the sequence at 0:28. I think the dice might be CG since they move every frame while the characters and flower are on 2s, which IMO makes it even more impressive that neither feels out of place with such a dynamic camera. The 2D animators were absolutely flexing to keep those characters on model and the 3D animators did an excellent job matching the style

CG just means computer generated, technically everything is computer generated in modern anime, but yes the cubes are most definitely 3D models, if you are more accustomed to 3D modeling its easier to spot 3D models, and the opening is full of them, some more subtle than others. 0:10 is also easy to spot due to imperfect lighting, strong reflection and them going ham on particles, The scenes where the main characters are standing and the camera rotates around them like 0:32, the ground is a flat plane and the background is a curved one. 1:06 Most of the scene is obviously 3D not only because of the lighting but also because of bad tracking (the 2D wife doesn't properly stay in a spot) At 1:20 the gate is also obvious because of the lighting.
